Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

The Health Services Union’s East branch paid out more than $17 million for goods and services without tendering or competitive pricing, according to an investigation commissioned by the union.

So what. Who said they needed to?

That kind of thing gets your union suspended and gets the Government in to try and sack the administration. Exactly as has happened.

Especially when Williamson’s companies get the contracts.

Very smart move for the PM to bring the NDIS forawrd, it gives the loto nowhere to go. He was acting as if it was his policy and his idea. Once again Julia Gillard shows hewr amazing skill and once again she gets told to step down. The Coaliton must be abslutely desperate, maybe their private polling tells them something different to the doom and gloom we get from the usual suspects.

  32. Ltep asked:

Thanks for that Astrobleme, and that’s for candidates in both HoR and Senate seats? Are you able to tell me by what margin the winning candidates usually win? Is it just FPTP? Are there any ‘groups’ within the party that meet to discuss which candidate would be best?

    Astrobleme replied:

There isn’t a plethora of candidates in the Greens so anyone who volunteers to be a candidate gets to be on the ballot is my understanding.

Not the case. Every candidate is vetted and has to be ‘vouched for’ by other Greens Party members who supply written testimonials. If a candidate doesn’t pass scrutiny s/he is not put forward as a candidate for pre-selection.

Recently, in Victoria, a secret postal ballot was sent out, with accompanying bios and testimonials, to every financial Greens member to select the Senate candidate.

Several “Meet the candidates” forums were conducted in Melbourne and regional/rural areas. Three candidates made guest appearances at my local branch. We did not discuss amongst ourselves who we thought would be ‘best’.

It was optional preferential voting. There were 12 candidates as well as a box to select “Seek other candidates”. Janet Rice was selected. She was not my choice but I accept the democratic outcome.

The last time I saw Janet Rice I questioned her in detail about who voted, what proportion of members, what the count was, etc. She provided me with the figures, etc but I will not be sharing this with PBers :-)

More details re endorsement of candidates is available in chapter 5 of Greens Party Constitution available online at: http://greens.org.au/system/files/AG%20Constitution%20%5Bas%20amended%20Nov%202010%5D.pdf

  37. Around 30 years ago a medical doctor of my acquaintance*, who was a leftard anarchist by general persuasion, managed to get the Country Party in a regional seat in Victoria to endorse him as candidate. They had to disendorse him during the election campaign as his inflammatory policy announcements, which started somewhere to the left of Trostky, got more and more extreme.

    He had a ball.

Mr Jones wants to put her in chaff bag and throw her into the sea while Mr Morris wants her kicked to death. These were, I am sure, the sorts of discussions that would have been common amongst the Brown Shirts.

I do wish the reationary thugster right would get its policy coordination processes better-integrated.

Just the other day we had Mr Abbott claiming that the Opposition has a plan for a ‘Cohesive Australia.’
