Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

It's a truly terrible realisation, but the person most like Peter Slipper in the current Australian Parliament is none other than Tony Abbott.

You don't, or at least don't want to, believe this? Then, as Gough Whitlam might say, compare and contrast.

  10. Must we use childish name-calling to deride the arguments ML makes?

The obvious response to his/her comment above is that the ‘referee’ is in fact the voters, and it will be voters who get to ‘blow the whistle’ at the next election, whenever that might be.

  11. Yep, the people get to decide, but it just might be wise for a few old hardheads in the ALP to have a quiet word to Gillard in the long term interests of the party.

She seems to have a little problem with political judgement. Either you got it or you don’t and Gillard well and truly don’t.

  22. Governments have always leaked good bits for weeks ahead while leaving some of the nasties in the detail. It won’t work this time because everyone already knows that:

    (1) the budget will be nothing but spins and lies
    (2) there will be a one-line detail upon which Mr Abbott will pronounce a three word slogan of economic death and desperation for the whole nation.
    (3) the MSM will focus its entire energy on this pronouncement
    (4) the budget will leave the whole nation in desperate indebtedness
    (5) everyone will be worse off because of the budget
    (6) which goes to prove that Labor are hopeless economic managers.

Labor’s only hope is that the budget in reply speech is drafted in committee by Messers Joyce, Abbott, Robb and Hockey.

  24. @TurnbullMalcolm @MikeKellyMP Malcolm, take note. “Fibre To The Node one of the biggest mistakes humanity has made” http://delimiter.com.au/2012/04/30/fttn-a-huge-mistake-says-ex-bt-cto/

One of the UK’s foremost telecommunications experts, a former chief technology officer of British telco BT, has publicly stated that fibre to the node-style broadband is “one of the biggest mistakes humanity has made”, imposing huge bandwidth and unreliability problems on those who implement it, as the Coalition may do in Australia.

The UK Parliament is currently holding an inquiry into ‘superfast’ broadband, as the nation struggles with many of the same issues which the Australian political system has in Australia over the development of the National Broadband Network initiative in this country. Fronting that enquiry in March, according to a transcript seen by Delimiter this week, was Peter Cochrane, one of the country’s most experienced telecommunications experts.

Cochrane spent most of his career at BT, the country’s former monopolist telco similar to Telstra in Australia, where he started as a linesman before progressing into the telco’s research and development department, eventually leading that team and becoming chief technology officer. Since leaving that role a decade ago, he has worked extensively as a force helping to accelerate tech startups, as well as a consultant.

In Australia, the Labor-led NBN initiative is currently using so-called FTTH technology, which sees fibre rolled out to premises all around Australia. However, the Coalition has stated that it sees the deployment as too expensive, and instead is proposing to switch to a fibre-to-the-node style rollout if it wins the next election, where fibre is rolled out to neighbourhood curbside cabinets, with the existing copper cable used for the remaining distance to houses.

Shadow Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull has used BT’s FTTN rollout — which the telco has said will achieve 80Mbps download speeds and 20Mbps upload speeds this year — as evidence for his case that the style of deployment will work in Australia.

HSO – I heard Morris make the comments and thought he couldn’t get any uglier than he has been over the past few weeks but he excelled himself today. Why is it that these old conservatives look so similarly ugly (Jones, Brandis, Abetz, Reith, Morris).

  32. I think the low mark in polling was the #newscorpse effort today (following Rupert’s tweeted effort for an election now) – where they online polled 37,000+ “people” across all their tabloid franchises and showed 92% of their readers wanted and election now!

92% wanting an election now. A figure so staggering that Malcolm “Fool” Farr put his name to a story on http://www.news.com.au quoting the poll and its findings.

Sadly, he did not tell us what the MOE was – but hey, 92% – that is not even 1 in 10 of the Australian people who are not clamoring for an election right now. Yes Sir, Rupert.

And the #newscorpse sponsored NewsPoll, in my view, has been debased by its frequency and Shanahan spinning. Round things up, or down; accentuate the negatives; rinse and repeat.

am waiting for the day when preferred PM for Abbott is 92%.

    Boerwar:

As usual you’ve managed to perfectly capture my thoughts so succinctly.

The govt has the economic and policy substance and doesn’t need to try to spin it in the face of a relentless hate campaign from the media.

Another question I have: who will deliver the coalition budget reply speech? AFter last year, Hockey is horribly tainted, and the media will be expecting any number of gotchas. I’ve seen nothing in hockey’s performances in the intervening year to convince me he has the ability to ‘flick the switch’ to capable, so does that mean Robb will get the gig? Abbott? Maybe Clive could be drafted early!
