Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

  33. ML:

Yep, the people get to decide, but it just might be wise for a few old hardheads in the ALP to have a quiet word to Gillard in the long term interests of the party.

She seems to have a little problem with political judgement. Either you got it or you don’t and Gillard well and truly don’t.

Shes a dud….time for someone else to have a go don’t you think?

    “Labor in Disarray!”
    ALP Dump Another PM!”
“Second ALP PM Knifed – Unprecedented!”
    “The Return of Sussex Street!”
    “Abbott Labels Government ‘Dysfunctional’!”
    “Abbott Calls For Election Now!”

Sure, that’d solve everything. I know what you’re after, but wishing won’t make it so.

I think that, given the choice between hurtling headlong into an immediate election and implementing good policy for another 18 months and then seeing how things are, the ALP are probably going to take the second option.

By then Mining Tax, Carbon Pricing, Tax Cuts and NBN will be firmly entrenched, and by the sound of things policy will be in place to ensure they’re irreversible. That will at least limit the damage Toxic Tony and Calculator Joe can do to the economy.

The downside of it is of course having you on the verge of orgasm for another year and a half. But it’s a small price to pay.

Using the latest in technology and with a vision of grandiose things in store for it, the Titanic plans were introduced in 1909 and the ship was put into action on May 31st, 1911. Construction was headed by Harland Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland and the Titanic was designed to be a bigger and better version of her little sister called the Britannic.

Titanic construction was funded by American industrialist J.P. Morgan and

  35. I did a quick scan through earlier posts to see if there were any comments on what taht noted ALP hater, Bernie Fraser, had to say on 7.30. Didn’t see anything and am wondering why?

Fraser is clearly not in favour of a surplus and pointed out that it had government fiscal policy working in an opposite direction to the RBA if the RBA drops interest rates tomorrow as expected.

He also noted that the HIP and BER gave government spending a bad name.

I part company with him there as I believe both were good programs, appropriate at the time and generally a success. However, they were not defended by the government to the extent they should have been and the name of the BER was so overblown that it invited ridicule.

    by joe2 on Apr 30, 2012 at 9:31 pm

  39. He also noted that the HIP and BER gave government spending a bad name.

The programs were great, the Abbott slander and media morons gave government spending a bad name without either needing to bother with either a reality check or a fact confirmation, Tony’s pressers were enough, I mean the written release ones, and the three word slogans at the 30 second presser. Obviously he didn’t stop long enough for them to challenge anything, and they got on the bus and started doing jokes about how bad labor was and forgot all about it until they got back and just typed out Tony’s kind notes for them and pressed ‘publish’.

  50. Transcript of Bernie Fraser on 7.30 tonight:
    http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2012/s3492320.htm?site=hobart
Bernie Fraser was RBA Governor and Treasury secretary in previous decades but says he is losing hope of seeing the competitive, compassionate yet fair country he fought for in a critique of both sides of politics.

In terms of my benchmark of competence, fairness and compassion, they've both failed, and they're both failing still, and the more distressing thing is I don't see a way out from either side.
