Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

  10. Schnappi @175,
If that leadership challenge involves one, Kevin Rudd, I think all should be reminded loudly and long just who stuck the knife into whose back repeatedly, during the election campaign in 2010 and until he was removed as Foreign Minister.

Ahh yes, that would be a little after they spent 12 months undermining and sticking the knife into rudd so they could back stabb him.

Telling half the story is a lie you know. Not to mention the leaks against gillard were most likely in retaliation for the character assasination that followed his knifing.

So let us not be so dishonest when wanting to worship at the feet of G.

  14. No doubt I’ll be growled at for saying this but we are in Whitlam era territory.

I know you are going to say “wait until the carbon tax comes in” or “the budget will save us” or “the NBN will win the hearts of the public”

There is no confidence left in the government and people now would prefer to punish themselves with the most inept (policy-wise) opposition in history because they feel it’s the better alternative.

But it’s not all bad news. The government still has time to get some extra reforms in and at least leave a positive legacy. Likewise, if the ALP use the next few years to fix its internal problems (or make headway) while staying strong and confident up top, I guarantee the Abbott government will be short lived without having caused too much damage.

However, living in denial, then being stunned when beaten and genuinely clueless as to what happened and begin tearing at eachother’s throats is a good way of giving Abbott a decade and “successful PM” moniker.

but the deniaiists here will abuse you…they are in a state of denial,,,see also The Titanic syndrome

by deblonay on Apr 30, 2012 at 2:52 am

  16. Carey – I totally agree, this isn’t just a Labor problem, we saw the Liberals in the 1980s and currently and the ALP during the Howard years struggle to understand why they were not in government and rather than look in the mirror they found it easier to blame the voters.

I think it is easy to predict that for all of Tone’s first term all we will hear is “o thanks to the media”
