Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

  3. CONCERN for the environment has dwindled into a ''middling'' issue that many people do not have strong feelings about, a major study into Australian attitudes towards society, politics and the economy has found.

Food, health, crime, safety and rights to basic public services - the tangible things that people confront on a daily basis - are dominant national concerns.

I wonder how much the country now being drought-free is factoring into peoples’ attitudes? Five years ago most cities were on severe water restrictions, and there were some national campaigns to take action on climate change.

  6. I doubt whether there is anything in our Parliament’s procedures that allows a vote to be ignored; that is, to disenfranchise part of the electorate.

I would go so far as to say that any call for such is seditious.

  10. I agree we are in Whitlam territory. So what should we do?

Yep. The government’ handling the financial disasters (1st Oil Shock/ GFC) better than most nations, esp Tory UK & Republican USA in the early years); there’s a budget deficit, but in GDP & international terms, a small one; the Liberals are creating a groundless, constant climate of crisis and fear, lying through their teeth about the economy & deficit; Murdoch, sensing a regime-change opportunity and a willing tool in the LOTO, puts the boot into the government, through his papers, esp The Australian …

Hang in there. This time, the Brits, Westminster, Leveson – and Lewis & others in the USA – are doing it for us. With a lot of luck, Rupert and his son James will be declared unfit persons to control media empires, esp TV broadcast & IT streamed media, before Conroy’s legislation re regulatory measures and committees to enforce them is introduced to Australia’s Parliament.

This time the Federal Government is wise to what’s going on. As long as it can hang on (it still has the numbers) Murdoch will be reined in, and there will be no regime-change.

He would say that though, wouldn’t he….

You’ll love this one, newly up on UK papers: David Cameron called to Commons to answer questions over Jeremy Hunt Labour seeks explanation for why PM is referring culture secretary to Leveson inquiry rather than ministerial code adviser

David Cameron will be asked to come to the Commons on Monday to explain why he is blocking an immediate inquiry into any breaches of the ministerial code by Jeremy Hunt, and is instead referring the culture secretary to the Leveson inquiry, even though no hearing will be held for a month and Lord Justice Leveson has himself said that the inquiry has not been established to adjudicate on the issue.

Cameron, facing an unprecedented personal poll slump, gave some ground on Sunday by saying he would act if necessary, but insisted: "As things stand, I do not believe he broke the ministerial code."

In a lengthy interview with the BBC's Andrew Marr programme, Cameron admitted he had got too close to the Murdoch empire, but said there had been "no grand deal" in return for the support of News International at the last election
