Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

He’s posted here as recently as Saturday.

  5. The problem with the ability of people in Lilley to cut through the spin to what’s really important is that they showed poor judgement in re-electing Swan in 2010 so anything is possible. Swan v Palmer, I would have to vote Green or Katter :(

That will not change, regardless of the outcome of the specific allegations.

What may become even more important than the outcome is if Slipper has been “Greched” .Should that be so it will have dire consequences for the Coalition. Especially internally. Whatever the outcome we can only sit back and wait for it.
Now when you say Slipper is a “lizard” I assume you mean a “lizard” from your sphere of expertise, a “lounge lizard” and not one of the “lizard people” ? :)

  18. More a issue of the ALP being on the nose rather than Swannie himself I think.

I am fascinated how the use of smell is being used to decry Labor and the P.M.

I’m inclined to think that those who use it have nothing to go on – there is no scandal involving Ministers, as there was under Howard, continuously – so they rely on smell and something being ‘off’ as a way of covering up for the lack of substance in allegations against the government.

    Comrade, you are backsliding!

Swan may not be the worlds greatest communicator, but he has done a good job as Treasurer and that has been recognised on the international stage.

Oh yes, we wouldn’t want someone capable of doing the job of Treasurer, and recognised as one of the best internationally, when some right wing bovver boy could be fawning over Tony from the back bench in permanent opposition.

I’m sure they don’t but then you can never underestimate the abundance of stupid. Also during the time he was being made speaker there was an article about the dirt file that the Coalition supposedly had on him. It was mentioned that it would be unlikely that they would use it as it was also “known” that he had his own “dirt file” insurance. If that were the case they would need to be a little “creative” , which of course is where the stupid comes in.

It is not just good to vent on PB it is bloody essential.

There IS a problem. Labor MUST fix it or fade into oblivion. PB and similar sites are the only place where there may be some chance of thrashing out ideas and helping a renewal. Too many here want to squash debate, preferring to adopt the mind set of Saddam Hussein’s PR guy who denied the obvious as the bombs fell around him Comical Ali was he?

My point is that there IS a problem. Thinking about what it is just might help, trather than denying one exists.

Personally I think that it is too late to save government and have probably now shifted to the idea of a Crean led government. Take labor out in honourable fashion and perhaps live to rise another day.

Stupid to wast young talent by leading to defeat and Rudd would need to be a masochist to take it on now.

Had Rudd won in February I think there was a good chance of winning government again. Now I fear they will be lucky to hold 45 seats. A Victorian may hold on to a few.

Palmer will probably win against Swan. Swan (I suspect) lost a lot of support when he trashed Rudd. They had been old mates. Everybody knew in Qld. Will not go down well.

    Where? What’s the address?

by Bushfire Bill on Apr 30, 2012 at 12:04 pm

  32. I wonder if Clive Palmer “consulted” with his colleagues re making his announcement of his intention to seek preselection for the seat of Lilley? There has been a dearth of LNP supporters of Palmer contaminating the airwaves as yet so maybe they’re all stunned and considering their positions?

    by janice2 on Apr 30, 2012 at 12:04 pm

  33. poroti,

Slipper was endorsed 9 times by the Libs. Surely, they wouldn’t endorse and support someone in to Parliament over such a long period of time who was as morally reprehensible as many claim.

Only last september Tony abbott gave Slipper a ringing personal endorsement. Abbott and many others attended his wedding. John Howard promoted him to Parliamentary secretary and Slipper was Deputy speaker for years at the behest of the Liberal Party.

So, for those making their claims about alleged peccadillos of Mr Slipper over a very long time, please remember who allowed his alleged behaviour to flourish.

by Greensborough Growler on Apr 30, 2012 at 12:06 pm

  34. Bemused to be honest while Swan is not my favorite politician I would choose Swan over Palmer if forced to make the choice. Thank heavens that won’t happen.

Let us not be too precious. Psephos works for David Feeney one of the four architects of the Gillard ascendency. He is a player not an observer. i think he can/should be able to handle a few PB commentators. If not then perhaps he should not be in a politician’s office.

  41. However, there may be occasions such as now when it is the least bad alternative.

If you have never had to choose a “least bad” option then I envy the sheltered life you have led.

So this excuse can be used now but couldn’t be used when Rudd was bombing and heading for defeat. I see.

by Gary on Apr 30, 2012 at 12:09 pm

  42. BB,

It was a question to Wayne Swan at the press conference about whether the PM had the confidence of working Australians. he said he is proud of the work the government is doing for them.
