Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition

Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.

UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

    And death for democracy!

LNP are in beds with mining Magnets.

And labor are in bed with unions and we all know how that’s working out. JWH warned us all about big bad unions, Gillard would have done well to follow that advice.

For more than a 100 years it has been working out pretty damn well for working Australians, one of the best countries in the world, largely thanks to Labor and the unions.

Bemused that assumes that saving us from the GFC was only about avoiding a recession when it was much more than that. However let’s assume recession avoidance was the main game then maintaining employment even at less hours or lower wages is much better for the economy than having numbers of those employees unemployed and on benefits.

I am not writing a PhD thesis on the GFC and Australia’s response so obviously don’t deal with all aspects.
I will remind you of the action taken to support Australian banks for example.

Yes, reduced hours and wages is better than none, but it is only a matter of degree.

Recessions are caused by insufficient demand in an economy. If consumers and business (investment) cut back then Government needs to step in to boost demand. The Australian Govt did this and other governments didn’t and copped a recession by pursuing ‘Austerity’ policies which only dig the hole deeper. The UK is a prime example.

The idea that they are in “control” of things is largely an illusion.

That is largely true. Like Keating being blamed for the interest rate spike in Australia when it was in fact a global event. HOWEVER ,in W.A. we had a taster of what would happen in a sans BER world when before the GFC hit mining companies preemptively sacked thousands of workers. There was nothing to pick up the slack and things were dire very quickly. Heaps of cheap HSV’s and jet skis though :) .
Without the BER for example many thousands of tradies and associated businesses would have been in the same boat as the W.A. mine workers were.
W.A. ended up getting a double bonus when the miners realised fairly early they had over reacted and started re hiring and then getting the stimlus package.

Why not? They have just given us an arrogant little dictator as premier….

by Boinzo on Apr 30, 2012 at 1:04 pm

  20. kevjohnno, the point I was making is that the media commentators use the smell slur as one of a number of techniques to create the irrational feeling that you identify in QLD. I noticed Murdoch in his tweet made use of the word ‘slimey’ in relation to the government.

Expect that term and similar, now, to be used by the parrots.

So if a democratically elected government isn’t in control, then we as a people aren’t really in control and democracy is a farce. I’m not saying you are wrong but could you outline who enslaved us, when they did so, and why we carrying on with that electing Government farce?

Comrade, you are very confused! I will try to assist.

Yes, Government fiscal policy was assisted by RBA monetary policy and it was reported at the time that Treasury and the RBA worked together in pursuit of the Governments overall strategy.

  44. Ah compassionate conservatives don’t you just love them ?.Meanwhile tax cuts for the rich. When will they start eating the rich ?

Chris Grayling, you've made me financially as well as physically disabled
Employment support allowance offers me a shred of dignity. And tomorrow ministers take it away from me

Tomorrow marks the end of an era for the disability benefits paid to people like me. From tomorrow payments of contributory employment support allowance (ESA) will be limited to just one year – regardless of whether a claimant is well enough to return to work.

Despite the fact that I've endured 14 operations, suffered life-threatening bone infections and am coping with the loss of four centimetres from my left leg, thanks to a rare bacterial infection three years ago that resulted in septicaemia, Chris Grayling, the employment minister, is withdrawing my ESA with immediate effect. Although I suffer extreme pain and my mobility is severely compromised, my benefit will stop. And because my wife earns more than £7,500 a year I will no longer be entitled to a penny.

  45. LSL:

I dislike this “Labor saved us from the GFC” nonsense. The truth is that governments are largely hostage to external forces. The idea that they are in “control” of things is largely an illusion. It was just good luck that John Howard’s reign coincided with a period of high growth, just as it is largely luck that the circumstances in Australia at the time of the GFC allowed us to avoid the same consequences as much of the rest of the world. It is just silly partisan nonsense to talk of the likes of Wayne Swan as somehow single handedly “saving” the nation from bankruptcy. Only in his dreams.

ModLib’s not going to like that. He’s been going on about average indicators over the past 40 years. Turns out it was just dumb luck, right-place-right-time!

Still, it’s terrific to know we can finally throw away Costello’s “world’s best treasurer” nonsense. Turns out he really did spend the entire time in his hammock.

One thing does confuse me, though. Economic indicators under Howard largely reflected what was going on in the rest of the world. However, during the GFC Australia’s performance differed markedly to everyone else. Can’t have been the mining industry, as they suffered a downturn and made cutbacks along with everyone else. So what was it? Did the GFC just bypass us?
