Galaxy: 56-44 to Coalition
Galaxy has published its first poll of federal voting intention in two months, and now as then the result reflects the overall polling trend: the Coalition’s two-party lead is at 56-44, compared with 54-46 last time, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (up two), 30% for Labor (down four) and 13% for the Greens (up one). Three further questions elicit a general mood of hostility towards the government, only one of which strikes me as being particularly instructive: 52% express support for a no-confidence motion and an early election, against 38% opposed. When Essential Research asked simply about support for a new election in early March, the results were 44% supportive and 46% opposed. The poll was conducted over the past there days from a sample of 1012, with a margin of error of about 3%.
UPDATE: Consolation of a sort for Labor from Essential Research, which at least doesn’t echo Galaxy’s finding of appetite for a new election (support down two since March to 42%, opposition up two to 48%), but their voting intention result has deteriorated yet further. The Coalition now leads 57-43, up from 56-44 last week, although the changes on the primary vote are slight: the Coalition is up one to 50%, with Labor and the Greens steady on 31% and 11%. Other questions find overwhelming support for the government’s aged care reform package (61% against 7% opposed), although 62% concede they know little about them. It was also found that 39% supported agreed with Joe Hockey’s sentiments about Australians receiving too much assistance from the government, with 33% disagreeing.

If Slipper ia cleared of any fraud re taxi charges, which appears to be the case. He can make a short statement in Parly that he will stand down until civil proceedings are dealt with on the proviso that all other MPs currently in the middle of civil proceedings do the same. That would throw a cat amongst the pigeons

Got some bumfp in the mail box last week from the Member for Perth. You wouldn’t have known that the Hon. Stephen Smith is a Member of the ALP. Not one identifying mark.

I still find it utterly amazing how not one question seems to have been asked of any Opposition member concerning Mr Ashby basing at least part of his FWA application on allegations concerning Mr Slipper which took place in 2003 and which were kept “in house” by the LNP. It’s pretty transparent where that information would have come from, wouldn’t it?
Yet not a single question about that aspect of the claim.
I don’t actually think the media is engaged in some conspiracy in this. I just think they’re collectively pretty bloody stupid.

The msm are deliberately ignoring everything that is negative for the coalition. They are under no scrutiny whatsoever, despite the fact they are seeking to take power any day now

And glad to see that parliamentarians can continue without fear that what they say in Parliament can be used against them, in any way, in court proceedings. The penalties for abuse of PP are best dealt with in a political manner – and of course anyone named should have a right of reply.

Just thinking about the left-leaning media, and our concerns here about their competence and inability to be unbiased.
It occurred to me the media, particularly the murdoch media is very left wing. They are implementing extreme measures of affirmative action. In the fight between labor and liberal the liberals are under huge ethical and policy disadvantages, the left leaning media are simply doing as much affirmative action as they can to put them on the same footing they would be if they told the truth and did policy work and stuff like political parties used to do.

by ltep on Apr 30, 2012 at 1:54 pm
That’s because it’s from his as a local member, rather than him as a *candidate* for election.
You aren’t allowed to do party political stuff in eletorate newsletter that are paid for by the taxpayer. During election times, it is paid for by the member, not the taxpayer. Outside of elections there are strict rules on politicking.

Mr Speers and Mr Hargraves excelling on Sky just now. They only have two rings between them, arses being a topical issue in our MSM at the moment, but nevertheless they managed to put on a three ring circus.
When Mr Speers asked how Ms Gillard could stop Mr Thomson from voting in Parliament, Mr Hargraves opined that an election ought to do the trick. But failing that, she could order one of her parliamentarians not to vote for the Government every time Mr Thomson voted for the Government. Mr Speers stopped short of asking Mr Hargraves whether Mr Abbott should order one of his parliamentarians not to vote for the Coalition should Mr Thomson vote for the Coalition on a bill.
Theatre of the absurd.
by Boerwar on Apr 30, 2012 at 1:59 pm
Abbott and his gang are mere sycophantic lackeys for the sectional interests of the big end of town. On almost every issue they have actively supported sectional interest over the national interest.
The media barons have decided that they want compliant lackeys in place of good government. Then they can loot the country without restraint.
Abbott is Murdoch’s modern day equivalent the “Groom of the Stool.”

Launch of NDIS presser questions are all about Mr Thomson, leadership speculation, crossing the line, cloud hanging over parliament (not to speak of a cloud hanging over Ms Gillard), Mr Palmer’s sally, will Ms Gillard step aside as leader?

What do your powers of observation tell you about The PM and her view that there is a cloud hanging over the parliament. There is a missing piece. What is it?
by victoria on Apr 30, 2012 at 2:03 pm
@963 – see, that would be the narrow minded approach of a leftist idealogue.
Has an ALP or Greens supporter refused to pay the lower personal tax rates that the Howard Governemnt brought in? No – because to do so would be completely stupid. All the Greenies protest against roads being put into virgin forests and then use them to gain access once made.

Thanks to Labor’s reform of the use of Members’ publishing allowances, MPs are not supposed to promote their party using taxpayers’ money.
Thus any MP using party logos or pushing specific party lines is breaking the rules.

I am not sure what Ms Gillard might be holding back but I am pretty clear what is holding her back: Mr Rudd, Mr Thomson, Mr Richardson, Mr Bramston, Mr Beattie, Mr Latham etc, etc, etc.
Ms Gillard has endless quantities Labor Lead in her saddle. They combine in one way or another to keep dragging her down, taking their turns to do so.
They have in common one thing: they are feather dusters who once were roosters. They seem unable to cotton onto the idea of helping the current head hen in the pecking order. Instead they nurse their relevance deprivation disorders by feeding the insatiable maw of the MSM and by aiding and abetting Mr Abbott.

Afternoon PBs
Vic I think that JG has shifted the debate yet again to clear the way for the budget. MSM are running in circles barking at their own tails as per usual and the job keeps being done. My take is that when she held the war cabinet before she went away she was setting the team up for what she knew was coming. We are lucky we have her as leader. Many others would be jelly by now. Expect more policy announcements this week. Expect the ground to keep shifting and the MSM to keep losing the thread.
Have to say Clive was an unexpected gift but based on previous behaviour he may be creating a diversion for some as yet unknown reason. We could speculate of course.

Spot on. As if the PM hasn’t enough on her plate with Abbott and msm to deal with. Someone should stuff a sock in Beattie’s mouth at least – Ex pollies should have to sign a contract to stfu for a decade after leaving the cock-a-doodle-doo roost or suffer a public de-feathering.

Most of the comments I read seemed to be wtte “what can we do about these hopelessly left-leaning journos who support stinking, incompetent Labor?”
