Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

  11. I was absolutely gutted last night.

I’m feeling much better this afternoon. These things have a way of working themselves out.

Amused to watch how the conservatives will try and spin this given how much they’ve gone on about the government putting pressure on interest rates. 50 basis points lower than the lowest they were under the Howard government

    by spur212 on May 1, 2012 at 3:26 pm

  12. Especially given that it was raised by Grattan, I see the Pyne business as the distraction for MSM from good interest rate news

    Well done.

Have you heard the news about the 4 deaths at Glen Waverley?
    Overtaking any news about
    Interest rate cuts and/or Pyne

Not stopping bits of Baillieu budget getting through
    Not so bad, after all.
    (nothing about going into deficit!)
And the TAFE cuts being reported as “only affecting those crappy, hospitality courses” anyway.
    Fkers.

  15. Yes it would be interesting to know how detailed information about Slipper found its way in to Ashby’s statement of claim from 2003 when Ashby only started working with Slipper in mid December last year.

Perhaps there was a little spilt drinks?

  16. Steve Lewis MUST run an “Embattled, Disgraced, Pyne Crisis” story on the front pages of the Hackers tabloids tomorrow. He must then follow up with an”Abbott stumbles” double page spread. The Sun/Telegraph?CM/Advertiser/Mercury etc must run a phone poll:”Do you think Mr Pyne was telling the truth about his late night drinking session with the disgraced Slipper aide?” Michelle must then call on Mr Abbott – in a page one opinion piece – to act swiftly on this scandal which is tainting the alternative Government. “Sources” must then be sounded out about a Lib spill because of the enveloping crisis.

If banks reduce their rates, customers will know soon enough. When it comes to money, people find out asap what is benefitting them. The msm does not need to spruik this at all

  18. Of course: the CARBON TAX!!! We’re all doomed!!!

What’s really funny about that is at the time of 4.25% rates under the Howard government, the big issue was the GST

  23. Interesting comments by Tony Windsor on Lateline last night and on Breakfast this morning, as reported in the OO

As the Coalition hits an 11-year-high in the latest Newspoll amid a crash in support for Julia Gillard, Mr Windsor said the Opposition Leader should stop talking about a motion of no-confidence and actually put one to a vote in the House of Representatives.

The member for the NSW rural seat of New England, who helped Labor form government after the 2010 knife-edge election, said if a motion of no-confidence was put forward he would assess the arguments by the Coalition and cast his vote “based on the evidence put forward”.

“I don’t intend to initiate a motion of no-confidence on the basis of my agreement with the Prime Minister,” he told ABC radio.

“But others may and then I would be required to obviously vote on that if it goes before the parliament.
“The only way Mr Abbott can find out (if he has support in the parliament) – he would know this, he’s read politics 101 – is if he tests the market place.”

    http://tinyurl.com/bnby7e3

So how about having a motion of CONFIDENCE in the Government being put up?

Assuming it was passed, it should shut Abbott up or provide plenty of ammunition to use against him.

Windsor commented that many people thought that there had already been numerous motions of No Confidence against the Government passed by parliament. I think he has a point.

  31. It’s getting even more spicy by the hours:

Mr Ashby claims in documents lodged with the Federal Court that Mr Slipper walked into his office and said: "Can I kiss you both?" There was no one else present. This is alleged by Mr Ashby to have happened the day after Mr Pyne had a drink with him.

In addition, Mr Ashby claims that Mr Slipper called into question via text message on February 26 "whether your loyalty was to thugs in LNP or to me!"

In a subsequent text message sent to Mr Ashby, Mr Slipper said: ";;) ok I do like you but must understand I get upset when you play with my enemies and keep me in the dark. It is not what I expect of someone I considered I am close to. If you find this intolerable please discuss".

  37. An interesting section of the Pyne article.

A source close to Mr Slipper’s office told the National Times that, during the evening of March 19, Mr Ashby revealed personal details to Mr Pyne, a claim Mr Pyne strenuously denies.
“I have nothing to hide,” Mr Pyne said. “I was simply passing the time of day. We had a beer and a political discussion.”
Asked if Mr Ashby raised with him any concerns regarding Mr Slipper, Mr Pyne replied, “No. Not at all.”
