Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

  1. guytaur,

    20:30 our time. Excellent!

Agatha Christie’s “By the Pricking of my Thumbs” starts at the same time. Now, setting the timer.

Quite an appropriate title for the occasion.

Leaders come and go, my loyalty is to the party.

I don’t have a ‘side’, but I firmly believe JG is ‘leading’ the govt to disaster. Check out her approval ratings and see their impact on the 2PP despite ALP policies being mostly favoured.

  6. A few = 71 to 31. Better than two to one. Abbott would wet his knickers if he’d won by that margin, instead of only the ‘tainted’ vote of Slipper.

Suck it up, Princess, you’re full of it already but there’s room for more.

It’s alright Petal. I want the same thing you do and that’s Gillard as the Pm until the next election. Gillard is the best person to lead Labor.

Terribly hard to answer that one at the moment . . . when you’re standing in quicksand on Rupe’s shoulders at Leveson.

  20. Ashby transcribed:

"I have nothing to say regardinh Mr.Pynes comments quoted in today's media. As I have previously said to media,no extrenal party is paying for my legal or media relations fees. And as I have also said to media,, I have not and will not be taking money to lodge my legal claim. The Court is the proper body to decide the merits of my claim and the veracity of the defence."

So my question is: seeing as it costs only $62.40 to lodge a legal claim of this type, will Ashby be taking money to PURSUE his legal claim, once it gets to – shall we say – the pointy end?

Also, can I opine that this does not seem to be the kind of statement a man who goes to water over his boss saying he looked fat in a polo shirt would put out?

  21. Wrote earlier that Grattan( might have got that wrong just sounded like her) asked questions about Pyne. I don’t watch much TV news. Has there been any talk of interest rate fall( remember it happened just today) or is it all Pyne and/or leadership? Don’t think I’ve seen many comments on interests rates on this site.

I suspect that if Pyne is not hiding corruption he is hiding sexuality

Why, splutter, the man’s married, got four kids.

had to do Kitchen Cabinet with Amandarin Vanstone (whose dog bit his misbehaved 9yo . . . sniff sniff from AV, submissive titter from Pyne)

But then again, Slipper is married with kids.
    Hmmmmm.

Mr Ashby does not back up Mr Pyne’s account of what they didn’t talk about.

So, what did they talk about?

My guess would be the timing of Mr Ashby’s moves to coincide with the run up to the budget.

  32. I suggest that Slipper reprimanded Ashby for going behind his back and possibly plotting with Pyne (“my enemies”).

I’ve been away from this all day, so apologies if I make a point someone else has covered since post #1308.

For me the most obvious point is that (according to Abbott):

    1) Slipper was on the nose with the Liberal Party and they were doing their damnest to get him out of the parliament;
    2) He had already resigned from the party and was the *Independent* Speaker. He was no longer sitting in on Liberal/Coalition meetings;
    3) Given 2), there is no reason on earth why his staffers would liaise closely with any other party’s MPs. Their staffers, maybe, but even then that is debatable. I can’t think of any circumstance in which an MP’s staffer would have anything more than a 5 minute conversation with another party’s MP’s staffer. “Does this time suit you?” or “My member says your member is a bastard. Tell him to go *&^# himself” just about covers it.
    4) In my 15 years as a political staffer, I have never had one-on-one talks with another party’s MP. Never. Why would I?

As BB says, if you read the Slipper SMSes, it makes sense now that it was after the meeting with Pyne – that Slipper obviously got wind of – that he starts questioning Ashby’s loyalty. I also made that point on here when I first read that SMS conversation; it seemed pretty obvious there was something going on behind the scenes that gave Slipper a reason to question Ashby’s loyalty.

I can’t believe that the MSM are saying there this nothing in this! Shit, they’ve gone to town on stuff much flimsier than this – that affected Labor, of course. But because this is happening to the Liberal Party, we get “nothing to see here!”.

Far be it for me to channel Victor Meldrew, but I don’t believe it! Our journos can’t be so stupid they can’t see there is GOLD in this story; the only other explanation is that they have been told to look the other way.

Come on, Gillard and Conroy. There is plenty of meat on the bones now.

  46. Loved these quotes from Krugman’s site:

We’ve always encouraged young people: Take a shot, go for it, take a risk, get the education, borrow money if you have to from your parents, start a business.

Because all of us have parents who can stump up a couple of hundred thou to give us a start in life…

    And…

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
