Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

  1. Why wouldnt they support Rudd?

The point is that the Rudd Cult like to imply that the NSW Right exclusively supports the Gillard camp, and that Rudd was exclusively supported by the left.

By any objective assessment this is fanciful.

    Carr
    Beazley
    Rudd
    Iemma
    Rees
    Kenneally (and almost Sartor)
    Gillard
    Robertson

    Why wouldnt they support Rudd?

I remember the vitriol directed against the NSW right by one evan whatshisname. They were the worst bastards on earth. Now they could end up supporting his god. You’ve gotta laugh.

  5. Re Commonwealth Commissioner for Children and Young People…Labor are just following the Greens initiative.

Greens Sarah Hanson-Young brought two bills to the Senate to establish a Children’s Commissioner.

    18 November 2010: http://www.probonoaustralia.com.au/news/2010/11/new-call-australian-childrens-commission

In September 2010 Greens’ Senator Sarah Hanson-Young introduced a bill to the Senate which called for the establishment of a Commonwealth Commissioner for Children and Young People to promote and protect the rights of children in Australia.

    15 August 2011: http://www.theage.com.au/national/do-more-for-children-un-urges-20110814-1it05.html

A Senate legal and constitutional affairs committee held public hearings on a national children's commissioner this year when it reviewed legislation introduced by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who proposed a detailed model.

Under Senator Hanson-Young's plan, which the majority of the committee did not endorse, a children's commissioner would have been elevated to act as the formal guardian for unaccompanied children who sought asylum, instead of the Immigration Minister who has the role now.

Legal sources have told The Age that the Attorney-General's Department was canvassing alternative models for a commissioner. The Gillard government has not agreed to the concept, although a spokesman for Attorney-General Robert McClelland said it was ''considering the issue''.

    30 April 2012: http://sarah-hanson-young.greensmps.org.au/content/media-releases/government-adopt-greens-push-national-childrens-commissioner-welcome-step-gre

"Throughout my years in the federal parliament, I have been working to establish a special advocate for our youngest citizens so I am very pleased to hear that the government has at last taken action" said youth and children's spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young.

"I have brought two bills to the Senate to establish a Children's Commissioner, winning broad support by the youth and children's welfare sector. I look forward to seeing the details of the government's proposal when the legislation is released later this year."

    1 May 2012: http://sarah-hanson-young.greensmps.org.au/content/media-releases/government-must-fund-national-childrens-commissioner-next-weeks-budget

"It's pleasing that this essential role, which was a Greens' proposal, will be operating under the Australian Human Rights Commission by the end of this year," Greens' youth and children spokesperson, Sen. Sarah Hanson-Young, said.

"But we echo the concerns of children's rights groups who worry the post may not be properly resourced.

"We will continue pressing the government to fulfil this recommendation, ensure the Children's Commissioner is properly funded and that Australia signs the United Nations' Third Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child."

The government has been very systematically working on this for years in response to lobbying by all sorts of people, most recently feeding into the UN Human Rights Council Universal Periodic Review process. Have a look at the documents and tell me how its a greens initiative.

By the way have you actually read the Greens Bill for a Children’s Commissioner? It’s woeful. It reads like something, well, like something drafted by Greens. Well meaning but pitifully unprofessional stuff.

  31. What a pity that the Greens don’t bother to tell people what they would do to alleviate pressure,…

In the same media release linked to by confessions:

Increasing benefits and rent assistance and boosting social housing building programs are the top priority - as a matter of urgency. The Greens call for an expansion of the National Rental Affordability Scheme and for all levels of government to embrace our Convert to Rent initiative - to make vacant dwellings available for affordable rental properties."

How much of the Royalties for Regions money has been spent on affordable housing in the Pilbara?"

"What is the current Landcorp affordable housing target? Why is it still required to operate at a profit, in contradiction to the 2008 Report recommendation?" Ms MacLaren asked.

    Convert to Rent Initiative: http://greens.org.au/files/Convert_to_rent.pdf

The Greens initiative provides financial assistance to property owners to help convert vacant or unused space into rental units to provide affordable housing to low income households. The program was successfully introduced in the City of London, Canada in 2008 and could be readily and cost-effectively implemented in Australia. In 2006, there were over 167,000 unoccupied buildings, residential and commercial, in Melbourne and Sydney alone. This initiative turns them into affordable housing opportunities.

Squeals the Greens muppet, readily and approvingly linked to by Pegasus.

But WTF does this actually mean? As I said earlier, no mention by the Greens of the state Liberal govts actaully putting the kybosh on federal housing initivates as BOF’s govt did recently.

So where does this leave the Greens and their OMG ACTION NOW!!!! simplistic demands which are devoid of actual reality?

by confessions on May 1, 2012 at 11:59 pm

  42. TLM,

Any change to the Carbon legislation or pricing at this stage is impossible.

Compensation is about to flow, tax cuts and change to the threshold are calculated on the $23 price.

Any reduction will rip the heart out of the budget. Any permits presold would have to bew refunded etc etc etc.

    it cannot be done.

Besides the greens and Windsor/Oakie would not accept it.

As well, how would the PM look. Stands for nothing etc etc would flow from the MSM.

Labor would not gain support it would lose support just as Rudd did.

by Doyley on May 1, 2012 at 11:59 pm

  43. But I suspect that she’ll do something drastic like that, in a last ditch bid to save her leadership, or Swan will be asked to cobble together some new tax cut proposal in next week’s budget.
It amuses me greatly that a woman with such dire poll ratings is treated as a god like figure over here.
