Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

Ironically, both Abbott and Pyne have been dirt file keepers on behalf of the Liberal Party, meaning they would probably have dirt on each other as well ;-)

Perhaps that’s believable. May explain why Murdoch was kept in the dark.

  27. Well, it looks as if Chris Pyne didn’t wait long at all to contact Ashby again:

Just a chat and a beer: Pyne on his Slipper office visit
    Jessica Wright
    May 2, 2012

Mr Pyne specifically asked for Mr Ashby’s contact details, according to emails seen by The Age.

Despite Mr Pyne saying yesterday that he could not remember asking for Mr Ashby’s contact details after the meeting – which occurred a month before Mr Ashby lodged legal action against Mr Slipper – The Age has been shown an email and a text message sent by Mr Pyne minutes after the session ended, requesting the details.

The request went to another staffer in Mr Slipper’s office. According to a return email, Mr Pyne received Mr Ashby’s email address at 11.02pm on March 19. This was one minute after he sent his request.

Another day of the Media spending way too much time on smears. Cover by all means just do not pretend they are the only important stories of the day.
NewsLimited is hampered by bring not to report on UK Parliamentary Committee of course.

by guytaur on May 2, 2012 at 10:45 am

  37. So Pyne initially says he saw Ashby around Parly and passed on some wine or some such. Then he admits having drinks with him, but does not recall asking for his contact details. Now he says of course I got his contact details, “why wouldn’t I”?

by victoria on May 2, 2012 at 10:46 am

  38. Why did Pyne contact “another staffer” to get his email addy when it would have been able to look it up himself on the parliamentary contacts list?

Or maybe he was asking for Ashby’s PRIVATE email addy.

A lot easier to deny contact if everyone is directed to the parliamentary email where, naturally, they can’t find anything to corroborate any allegations …

  43. Interestingly last night on “What the papers say” with T Delroy on ABC late, that in its sweep across the whole of the Oz print media, only the OO, only the OO, was into “leadership problems’ blah, blah, blah.

The sole intent of the Murdoch press is to destroy the current Labor government. Its flagship leads the way. Amazing really, as very few people actually read the damn paper and it has never made money.

There is no pretence at being even-handed about this.

So, when apologists for the conservatives/self-appointed critics of Labor come here and claim that supporters of the progressive side are thrashing around for reason to “blame” others eg scoff at the “it’s all the media’s doing”, they are wrong.

The Australian, in every which way, is making a concerted effort to destroy. It has admitted as much in its editorials and has included the Greens in its targets.

It has a fine pedigree in this role mind you, dating back to at least the 1970s – although the Oz does try to come out and point out where it has, at the last gasp, as it did with Rudd in 2007, go with Labor – that is, jump on board with the winner.

  46. victoria@2629,
Christopher Pyne can plausibly deny discussing the Federal Court action with Ashby all he wants, if he didn’t. However, he has not said that no one in the Coalition, or the LNP in Queensland, has ever discussed the matter with James Ashby.
I mean, ask yourself this, why did Pyne initiate e-mail and phone contact with an EX member of the LNP on Peter Slipper’s staff? And so soon before the matter came to a head? Smells Fishery to me. ;)

  48. guytaur we weren’t talking about credibility we were talking about the judgement of our PM and government.

After what went on during the QLD election campaign it’s hard to have much faith in the ethics and credibility of politicians generally so wouldn’t be surprised if someone from the Liberals was involved in the Slipper issues at some level.
