Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

one thing i can assure you windsor and oakeshott supported the govt because it was the RIGHT thing to do – they were elected as independents not as conservatives – they are both men of principle and took the action they did because they believed, rightly, it was in the best interests of their constituents and the country. end of story.

  5. Yes, but it’s a bit naive to think that no staffers or politicians drink when parliament is sitting, particularly in the evening hours. There always seems to be a party or function happening and quite often there are dinners for visiting parliamentary delegations etc.

Itep – it is a different matter when one is having a drink while entertaining delegations, etc., but another to be sitting in an office drinking for 2 hours during working hours when you are supposedly discussing matters of importance to the management of the Opposition business. If there was nothing suspicious about this then why didn’t Pyne admit it earlier when asked.

Speers apparently asked him last Sunday week if he had met Ashby. Pyne’s answers were ambiguous at best. If it was above board the ever bumptious Pyne would have said last Sunday week ‘Of course I’ve spoken with Ashby in Slipper’s office – on business matters’. He didn’t. Why? It stinks like Grechgate.

A point I was trying to make previously.
I do find it interesting that NSW released a statement late last year claiming there was no evidence or grounds to investigate the HSU.

The second matter referred to NSW police and currently under investigation relates to alleged corruption relating to contracts for supply of goods and services and a third party providing AMEX cards to Williams and Thomson.

  20. The main question of course is whether Pyne set Ashby up. The aside issue is one of drinking while at work. These people are paid big money to represent us in the House of Reps. This is what they should be doing, when the house is in session they should be there unless on official parliamentary business. How often do you see Parliament with about 8 members in the chamber? Pyne considered it more important to be drinking with a junior staffer than the Wild Rivers Bill – a motion instigated by his leader as well as the return of Australian troops from Afghanistan; both of which were being debated while he was drinking at work. Both of these issues are pretty important and should have the undivided attention of our parliamentarians. They should be in the House, not getting on the booze.

  35. Mr Thomson was assistant secretary of the HSU NSW branch, which became HSU East, from 1999 to 2002.

Hard to see any of the HSU East stuff being pinned on him, nothing was raised in FWA Vic investigation.

    Just following his bosses example.

TONY Abbott missed the key economic vote of the new Parliament - the $42 billion fiscal stimulus package - because he fell asleep after a night of drinking witnessed by MPs from both sides of Parliament.

Mr Abbott told Chief Opposition Whip Alex Somlyay that he missed five divisions on the night of Thursday, February 12 because he fell asleep in his office.

His nap followed dinner in the Members' Dining Room with Peter Costello, Kevin Andrews and Peter Dutton, where numerous bottles of wine were consumed
