Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition
Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

Danny,
I can still see in my mind Dame Kiri on 1 January 2000.
There is a DVD of Australia’s celebrations on that day but I’m damned if I can find any of the celebrations worldwide.

BH: Boinzo – did it really work?
No. But I got to listen to the Stones uninterrupted by 1D for a whole week…
GG: One day when you are old and decrpit I’m sure the cherubs will revenge themselves with 1D on a permanent loop in your bedroom.
No doubt GG. But that’s the day for me to head to the “facility”. Although I am confident 1D will be of no interest by the time all these 13 yr olds get to see them live in September 2013. There’ll be some other junk pop for ‘em to listen to. Hell we’ll probably have an election before 1D tours!

So Ashby did talk to Pyne about the sexual harassment allegations then? Next question is what advice, if any, Pyne provided to Ashby in relation to dealing with the allegations and whether Abbott or anyone else within the Liberal Party knew of Pyne’s involvement.

No worries. Let’s find out how many times Pyne spent 2 hours drinking with Harry Jenkins’ staffers during his time as speaker. That ought to be easy to ascertain.
by Laocoon on May 2, 2012 at 3:10 pm
Mr Pyne offen finds himself deeply offended, in the House and outside.

Its interesting. it becomes an issue 1. if the allegations are unproven AND 2. there is a smoking gun that indcates the Libs put him up to it.
by bluegreen on May 2, 2012 at 3:12 pm
Has anyone asked Mr Pyne if he talked to Steve Lewis about Mr Ashby? Given we know Lewis was talking to Ashby at the same time Pyne was drinking with him.
by ruawake on May 2, 2012 at 3:13 pm
Dio
The length of the working day during sitting weeks is deadly. The nature of much of the work is amorphous – discussions around an idea that might turn into a policy or program approach; testing the water; checking where the toes are, that sort of stuff. So, a lot of stuff gets sorted informally between offices all the time, both in the House on the Hill and in local bars and restaurants. Most of the poor bastards are on 24/7 digital leashes.
It’s inhumane, IMHO, and it tends to brutalise the good folk on the Hill to some extent or other.
I doubt whether one person in ten could draw a line in the sand and say, ‘Here you are working, now you are working, there you are not working, then you are not working.’
Focusing on sinking a few coldies together amongst all the policy discussions, fact gathering, cross-checking, chitchat, gossiping and rumour mongering is focusing on the piffle.

I am a man of very few and meagre talents and creating an ALP party room meeting when parliament is sitting is definitely not one of them.

Mr Williamson must do just not in time document management.

If the Police sealed the building how did Williamson get to the carpark? Or did they arrive as he was leaving.
by ruawake on May 2, 2012 at 3:17 pm
Pyne says he spoke with ashby ,but the allegations were not discussed, anyone who could believe that should be locked up as a danger to themselves.
by Schnappi on May 2, 2012 at 3:18 pm
Abbott refuses to answer on Slipper Gate allegations.
A headline we will never see.
by ruawake on May 2, 2012 at 3:19 pm
Williamson was probably enacting the HSU Document Retention Policy.
by Diogenes on May 2, 2012 at 3:19 pm
While we’re at it, someone needs to ask Albo whether he thinks it is “normal practice” for an opposint party MP to have drinkies with the Speaker’s staff while the Speaker is in the Chair …

I thought Williamson was on ordered leave – what was he doing in the building?
by shellbell on May 2, 2012 at 3:19 pm
Pyne didn’t say he spoke with Ashby. As I read his comments he still denies it, but has said even if Ashby raised them, why shouldn’t he. Ay least, that’s how I read it.
by Burgey on May 2, 2012 at 3:20 pm
Removing documents. Allegedly.

I would appreciate it if, just once in their entire careers, the HSU folk could keep themselves and their various asinine klutzplus activities out of the news.

ha ha ha, dont mention Chrissy Pyne
by The Finnigans on May 2, 2012 at 3:21 pm
Pyne is covering himself in case the third person in the room spills the beans on what was discussed.
by Danny Lewis on May 2, 2012 at 3:22 pm
so who was the 3rd person in the room? its all very Graham Greene.
by middle man on May 2, 2012 at 3:25 pm
I was thinking the same. The 3rd person may be loyal to Peter Slipper.

The hardest thing for me to believe about this whole Pyne thing is that someone willingly had drinks with Christopher Pyne.

Possibly just passed the contact details along. Would explain why he got them but supposedly didn’t use them himself. They could cook up the scheme while leaving Pyne able to deny….
by ShiftyPhil on May 2, 2012 at 3:25 pm
I think the killer point was mentioned by someone upthread: Ashby has been quick to issue denials of this and that…. why no comment on his meeting with Pyne?

Personally, I can’t wait to hear more from the third person in the room. The one thing we have not heard yet is what WAS discussed, or why Pyne would allow himself to be invited in for drinkies during sitting hours with people he didn’t know who worked for an MP who was not a member of his own political party.
Turn the situation around and imagine, say, Albo spending nearly 2 hours drinking with Slipper’s staff just before one of them launched an action against Christopher Pyne for sexual harassment.
We wouldn’t be hearing the end of it. Every journo in the country would be hitting their keybooards and the airwaves shouting government conspiracy.
