Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

This is what I was referring to.

“Craig Emerson and the government are sending a message to the victims of sexual harassment that if you bring a claim forward, we’ll accuse you of being involved in a political conspiracy.

“This is just more dishonest spin from a scandal-ridden government,” the spokesman for Mr Abbott said.

  12. The Australian Homestay Network is a private company. Its sole aim is to make a profit. All the rest is pure PR, on display on the ABC today. The interview, during the midday news today, was conducted in warm gentle tones, as if the AHN is some sort of benign charity with professional expertise in caring for people. Not so. Presumably AHN has struck a very lucrative deal with the Government to take asylum seekers off its hands, commercial in confidence of course. The real focus should be on whether the homestay hosts will be properly compensated for their generosity, after AHN takes its cut.

  16. I’ve thought recently that Penny Wong should stand for Sturt (or Boothby); her gravitas and obvious intellect would bring votes to Labor. Apparently she went to school in Boothby. Having her in the HOR would be great for question time. Treasurer perhaps?

  17. I’ve seen the two Cisse goals. The first one was good but not exceptional.

The second one is special. All soccer players at top level try for something like it. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred it doesn’t come off. It worked for Cisse this time and plaudits to him.

You only have to watch any soccer game at the top level and you will see things that are wonderful. I have good overall view of the field on TV but even then I would not have picked the precise pass that a player executed.

No other football code can give you that kind of pleasure.

Penny Wong went to school at Pembroke, which is in Sturt.

Speaking of schools, the Mastermind of UteGate and the klutz who fell for the Grech emails was one Chris Kenny.

The connection between the Chris’s Kenny and Pyne: both went to St Ignatius Adelaide! (as did Brendan Nelson….)

  21. The Commonwealth is the First Respondent in this case. They have legal rights to subpoena documents, including SMS text records, emails and the rest.

You must remember this … Police raid Godwin Grech home, want to question ex-Liberal advisor (complete with pics!)

POLICE haved raided the home of besieged Treasury official Godwin Grech after initial investigations revealed an email at the heart of the Utegate affair that threatened Kevin Rudd and Wayne Swan's career is false and police are now reportedly investigating possible links to Malcolm Turnbull's office.

Detectives executed a search warrant to comb Mr Grech's home in Calwell, in Canberra's south, early today.

Four detectives left the house carrying a opaque black case and several other bags shortly after 12.30pm

Never forget Steve Lewis’s role in Utegate. Steve Lewis’s story of what he was told by Grech! In retrospect, what delicious irony! How Utegate began with my call to Ford Credit’s Greg Cohen

However, far more serious allegations began to emerge last week, including that Mr Rudd and Treasurer Wayne Swan had intervened to help Mr Grant obtain finance to keep his motor dealership afloat.

I was told that Mr Grant's difficulties were raised with Ford Credit's Mr Cohen, at the very time the automotive giant was in talks about accessing a $550 million dollar "loan" through the OZ Car scheme.

I was told of an email chain involving the Treasury official at the epicentre of "utegate", the bookish Godwin Grech and Mr Swan's office.

I also heard allegations, perhaps the most sensational of all, that Mr Rudd's office had also made representations, on behalf of Mr Grant - the PM's Brisbane neighbour and ute benefactor.

And crikey’s take Utegate raises no end of questions for the media too

    From Wiki

The expression "by Jingo" is apparently a minced oath that appeared rarely in print, but which may be traced as far back as to at least the 17th century in a transparent euphemism for "by Jesus". The OED attests the first appearance in 1794, in an English edition of the works of François Rabelais as a translation for the French par Dieu! ("by God!").

The form "by Gingo!" is also recorded in 18th century.

The expression "hey Jingo"/"hey Yingo" was also known in the vocabulary of illusionists and jugglers as a cue for magic appearance of objects (cf. "presto"). Martim de Albuquerque in his 1881 "Notes and Queries" mentions a 1679 printed usage of the expression.

Origins have also been claimed for it in languages that would not have been very familiar in the British pub: in Basque, for example, Jinko is a form of the word for "God".

the court action is a fairly common dispute about the execution of a valid will
The “kids” are disputing “Dad’” giving all the money etc to Mirrabella(his former lover)
Like a soap opera really and ” the kids”have missed out

In his last years Prof Howard went a bit gaga and Sophie…the soul of kindness…put him up on the property owned by she and her Husband in Nth Victoria
She… now an MHR and a Very Important Person was frightfully busy and old Lover Boy was left to his own devices in a small cottage(barn?)
The grown-up “kids” weren’t told of his where
abouts by Sophie and took a while to find dad’s whereabouts
    They were not happy !
and were angry when they found their Dad in a pretty bad way and in poor conditions…looked after by a kindly staff member…Sophie being pre-occupied with Matters of State in Canberra
..The world was now her Oyster !
Dad was put in a nursing home and died there
Sophie meanwhile had become his Executor and happily the sole benificiary of the will
What Luck for a humble working girl !!.

. The Will .which inc. a splendid terrace house in Melb and money et.al, all went to Sophie
,,though Howard had bankrolled her political career earlier anyway…
Talk about a wealthy sugar daddy..
every working girl should have one !
Now “the kids”(a wealthy crowd btw.)..are seeking to have the will disallowed on the grounds that he was gaga when he made it..very reasonable complaint..and after all “the Kids” would then collect the estate.
Now they are all off to have their days in Court(A Barristers Picnic by the way !)
    Sp…
Will Sophie’s luck hold ? Will she lose the money? how will it all end up?
The next exciting episode coming up
    Beats “Downton Abbey “
