Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

  1. Morning All

I guess it was bound to happen – government wants a surplus at all costs so who do they go after??? Single mums of course – the every time target :(

In terms of cuts to the public service – I wish they’d dump the stupid efficiency dividend increases and just offer redundancies – they’ll have thousands of takers and the cuts will be much more transparent. Or is Penny looking for more savings in stationery orders and travel budgets – it really doesn’t work that way

Mind you, good to see Defence finally having to pay their share – they’ve been excluded for too long.

Abbott at it again playing both sides of the fence – GST carve up per capita when in WA, will look after Tassie when he was there, apparently The Mercury called him out on it which is good – he gets away with it way too often.

Pyne stuff has plenty more to play out but needs something more substantive – my guess as to the next development – the reply to Pyne’s email contained both an email address and a phone number – most people would offer both when asked for one or the other I’d suggest

I’m sure the government will cop a stack of pain on the “boat people in the granny flat” idea BUT it really does make sense – $130 per asylum seeker per week when it costs $2600 (figure I heard last night) in detention. What should not be forgotten is that the media here is not free of certain dark arts. Significant bits of Australian journalism have been drinking at the last-chance saloon well beyond closing time.

The self-regulated, industry-funded regime for newspapers and the partially self-regulated system for broadcasters have failed to deliver a decently accountable standard for a free media.

Womble, we’ve been doing it at least as far back as the period just before WW II (though there were Vic Era programmes) when people volunteered to look after those caught in Oz by the pre1 Sept 1939 German advance through Europe (esp Jews – might be something in the Melb museum). The programme extended into the War, esp where fostering children & minors was concerned (eg Vienna Boys Choir) and, during the War, refugees from the over-run Northern Archipelagos (inc those who arrived on Ban Hong Liong) and Pacific Islands.

It continued through the Bombed-out postwar migrant period, during the last days of the Vietnam War and during the Fraser & Hawke Govs Boat People surges, then Latin American refugees. Right now, it continues, in my area, Tony W’s New England & other places, integrating African refugees.

Until Howard decided to out Pauline Pauline Hanson, we’d always been a welcoming nation – after all, except for those who recently flew in, we’ve been a nation of Boat People since Indigenous Australians’ earliest ancestors arrived.

I’m so glad the tide is turning on bigots and those who hope to ride on their disgraceful prejudice to political victory!

  46. On billeting boat people, Scott Morrison’s rant of a press release yesterday is quite something to behold.

“Homestay was designed to provide accommodation to international students who arrive legally with valid visas and study arrangements. It was not designed for single males who arrive on illegal boats, without documentation and are working their way through the taxpayer funded appeals process after having their asylum claims rejected.

“To place asylum seekers in suburban homes and communities, where there is no consultation with neighbours or the police and just a hotline to call if something goes wrong has all the ingredients of another Labor asylum disaster in the making.

“When Australians expressed concern about rising costs of living, this was not an invitation for Julia Gillard to supplement household incomes by offering to pay the rent on your spare room or granny flat for asylum seekers.
