Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition

Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

I am in agreement with you about the welfare cut. I think that middle class welfare for “working families” that do not need it should be cut first. Not struggling families of all makeups.

  6. There should be absolutely no surprises when it comes to the conservatives complaining about government cuts when it comes to “defence”.

What the so-called fiscal conservatives on the right never deny themselves is opened-ended expenditure on the war toys, yet cuts to anything else – except perhaps more hand outs to the National Party.

In simple terms the conservatives are strong on Queen, God and Country – and lower taxes – for them. Under the “Country” heading though this means heaps of money for the armaments.

I gather one torpedo for the Collins class sub costs $1 million a piece, but then what’s a million for that?

The old gag used to be that when volunteer groups had to have a cake stall to raise funds for a new plane or tank, you know that defence needs more money.

  17. The Defence Establishment scribes in The Australian (of whom Mr Sheridan is the head honcho) are not happy at all. Mr Sheridan might learn that constantly criticising the government over everything, as he does, simply means that the Government no longer has to listen to him. Why bother when you know that his only variations are how wrong you are and how much wrong you are?

As far as I know Mr Sheridan hasn’t bothered to laud the Government for getting us out of the Coaltion mess in Afghanistan. But I may have missed something there.

Apparently, as we draw down on o/s commitments, we should have INCREASED our expenditure on Army. This is what all countries straight out of a war are supposed to do. Apparently the $250,000,000 for the self-propelled guns would have purchased two giant SP guns and Army wants them. It doesn’t matter that the US has bailed out of the same option, apparently.

Oh, and they want the sub decision to made yesterday. They are criticising the Rudd/Gillard governments for not sticking to Mr Rudd’s grand plan. They ignore the dramatic fall in government receipts post-GFC.

I assume that that want spending on schools, roads, hospitals, education and training to be converted into SP guns, instant submarines and instant JS fighers. But they don’t say that. Nor do they say they want spending on upper class nanny state stuff cut so that they can have more guns. Oh, and they want an extra couple of billion spent on indexing of defence super.

Oh, and they also criticise the Government for being ‘big spending’. No contradiction there, apparently.

The self-referential group think is interesting.

Oh, and I have yet to see Mr Sheridan excoriate the Coalition performance in Indonesia. As he should.

  24. hugh moran@5601,
Sorry to invoke Godwin’s Law, but I think it is relevant to make the point re Scott Morrison’s brand of Christianity, that I seem to remember that Adolph Hitler was a devout Christian too. Which, as we are all well aware of, led to some decidedly uncharitable, shall we say, actions towards those who were not Christians, eg the Jews, and those whom the Bible vilified, eg Homosexuals.

So, it is quite appropriate to say, therefore, that the beauty of Scott Morrison’s Christianity is in the eye of the beholder, him. It is not what we would generally conceive of as exhibiting aspects of Christian behaviour which Jesus Christ himself espoused. In fact, modern day Evangelical Christianity has less to do with emulating Jesus Christ than it has to do with reimposing a conformist, socially-conservative straightjacket. With an undercurrent of religious and social bigotry towards those who are not of them, eg Muslims and us wanton types, ie Social Progressives.

Actually, it is something I have been noticing of late when it comes to those candidates Tony Abbott and the Liberal Party are offering up to the electorate. Check out how many are, increasingly, blonde-haired females. It appears that Aryan stereotypes are the new black again in Conservative parties, both here and around the world. Scott Morrison again, for a male example.

Of course, they also make room for the Machiavellian types, such as Sophie. And the scions of wealthy benefactor families, such as ‘Pong’ Gambaro in Queensland. ;)

  28. An interesting article from the Economist on-line relating to growth in the US and how important Govt stimulus has been to it. It rather highlights the idiocy of austerity as a ‘policy’ at the moment.

Hello Sloppy? Hello Ted Ballieu? And, yes, hello Swannie?

And of course a huge hello to Cameron, Osborne and the rest of the European Governing elites at the moment too.

America's economy grew at an annualised rate of 2.2% in the first quarter, which disappointed the markets. The mediocre figure was explained in part by a 5.6% decrease in government spending and investment. A study out this week from Fitch Ratings and Oxford Economics suggests that stimulus spending in America in response to the fiscal crisis increased aggregate GDP by more than 4%, which, say the researchers, implies "that the US might still be mired in a recession" without the intervention.

As I mentioned, there is already a policy in place re single parents and benefits. I recall a few mums mentioning that they had to find 15 hours work a week when their youngest turned 6, to retain their benefits. Apparently this is to incentivise parents to get back into the workforce and contribute, once all their children are at school. I could be wrong, but being involved in school community, i Heard this on several occasions over the past few years

    Re the Sole Parent stuff.
The reality is the end of the grandfather clause has been brought forward by one year.
    That’s all.

That means those sole parents who benefited from the grandfather clause (because the ones who had kids after that were part of the new scheme, i.e. off the pension when the youngest turned 6) now have one year only to take advantage of all the training that has been on offer for the past six years.

Er, thankfully, it’s still a Fairfax report sourced from …

Single, unemployed parents will be given a nudge back into the workforce when parenting support payments are cut back in next week's federal budget.

The Gillard government is expected to reap savings of $700 million by axing support payments to parents who aren't working when their youngest child turns eight, News Ltd reports...

Under a 2006 arrangement, single mothers receive $648.50 a fortnight until their youngest child turns 16.

Hello! That’s a Howard Government reform!

    The Fairfax article continues

Under a 2006 arrangement, single mothers receive $648.50 a fortnight until their youngest child turns 16.

For partnered parents the $442 fortnightly income support payment will now end when the youngest child turns six.

Exemptions will continue to apply for parents in special circumstances, including those caring for a child with a disability.

News Ltd reported Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten said public income support should be temporary measure and not a disincentive for people finding paid work.

So far, this is NOT yet an announcement (though it probably will be)! This is the MSM again stirring up more sympathy for the “poor widdle petals” on 6 figure family incomes, with a massive sense of entitlement to loads of taxpayer-funded benefits! Unless there are health & mobility issues – in which case the mother’s benefit includes sickness/ Carer Benefits – there’s no reason for the mother of an 8 year old to be sucking on the taxpayer’s teat!

I can’t see why Tax-paying parents who ARE working {after} their youngest child turns eight, often those most need the money, should help bankroll stay-at-home mothers of children 8 and over who don’t pay tax. In the main, this is Middle Class welfare. Most of the poor work.

People tend to forget that Oz’s biggest income tax pool by far funded by PAYE taxpayers – that means ordinary wage & salary earners, not those “negative gearing”, not most of those with an ABN, not managerial level & above (excluding PS), not doctors, lawyers, etc.
