Newspoll: 59-41 to Coalition
Word on Twitter is that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead out from 56-44 to 59-41, from primary votes of 27% for Labor (down two) and 51% for the Coalition (up three). But for a 26% result in the September 16-18 poll, this would be the lowest primary vote Labor had ever recorded since Newspoll commenced in 1985. The two-party figure ranks as the Gillard government’s equal worst result, along with the poll of September 2-4. Newspoll hasn’t always reported two-party preferred results, but my own calculations tell me there remain unbroken records from the respective honeymoon periods of Rudd (63-37 in February/March 2008) and Howard (60.5-39.5 in April 1996). Julia Gillard is up a point on disapproval to 63% and steady on approval at 28%, while Tony Abbott is down two on approval to 33% and up one on disapproval to 55%. Tony Abbott has widened the preferred prime minister lead he gained in the previous poll, from 41-39 to 41-36. As always, the sample for the poll was around 1150, with a margin of error of 3%.

So why has the ALP announced a sweeping Aged care plan that is widely supported and then refused to sell it for a week.
by bluegreen on May 1, 2012 at 12:28 pm

You lie. It is the media not covering it in favour of sleaze. It is not like they cannot cover both stories. They just refuse to show the good Labor is doing.

According to 2GB’s Chris Smith, Chris Bowen was overheard on the weekend saying that Gillard will be dumped immediately after the budget is handed down.

You may have missed it. There was plenty of selling of the aged care package. Live pressers showed us that. Those pressers just did not get on the evening news. Editorial Choice not Labor choice.

Aguirre@614,
Agree with everything you said. The Labor Party should just get on with the job and go into the election in 2013 with their heads held high knowing that what they have done whilst in government has been the right thing to do for the country as a whole and not the vested interests who the Coalition pander to.
As for those who believe everything they are told, I have a friend who is Liberal voter in the main, one of those people who religiously buy the Womans Day every week, the Womens Weekly every month(so logic is obviously irrelevant), and The Daily Telegraph every day. She implicitly believes everything they put down and everyone they put down. She has a flake of a husband who gambled the lot on the Stock Market and property before the GFC, and lost the lot. However, after 2007 it was their opinion that Labor had to find ways to restore their Super value ASAP, plus keep the economy flaring along in the overheated fashion it was going when Howard was in & pre-GFC. In other words, Labor could never in a million years meet their expectations of it. And that is the attitude they have kept as their talisman of discontent ever since.
Of course, Tony Abbott will return Australia to the Howard Glory Days of yore. They are convinced of that.

You see bluegreen?
Its simple: the ALP is without fault.
ALP problems are always someone elses fault. Thats why they have to make up stories about people not saying things that they have said…

We are actually in furious agreement on this. BG asked why they haven’t been selling it the last week. The reality is that they began selling hard then the Slipper shit hit the fan. Form that time on trying to sell the Aged care stuff was impossible. Anyone who can’t see that just isn’t looking.

This government is hopeless at promoting anything good they do.

The media treating people with disabilities as second class citizen just to avoid giving the government a good story.

Work hard and engage with the electorate is the simple answer. Take their opinions and concerns seriously and don’t argue with them. Persuasion is the answer not telling them they are wrong.
I am a great fan of Polfile though it is a lot of hard work but it takes your message straight into their homes.
I have been very lucky in that we had an engaged membership to help out but we also had lots of great passionate community members who wanted to be part of a campaign. Include them at all costs never ever reject an offer of help and be sure if you promise to get back to them you do.
You would be surprised how many people love being of assistance and feeling they are part of something. I have had some wonderful times even though we were all bugg…. we had a ball.
Oh and always put on lunch or such for them on the day before the election when all the work is done. They deserve it!
by MTBW on May 1, 2012 at 12:42 pm
Poor Mark Butler was on the radio last week trying to sell the aged care package .. and he tried his best. Has the Aged Care package … always a complex policy area … been cast into the ‘too hard to sell’ basket?
by blackburnpseph on May 1, 2012 at 12:42 pm
You seriously think the ALP factions don’t have scores of internal and public polling and know something about brutal electoral politics.
by bluegreen on May 1, 2012 at 12:42 pm
The answer to why it was not “promoted “.
The Aged Care Package was announced on Friday.
Saturday was the breaking ” news” re Peter Slipper.
BTW, the minister did numerous interviews re the package. None were reported. All attention was on Slipper.
Of course it was pure coincidence.
