Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

Julie Bishop, meanwhile, diagnoses “a vacuum at the heart of Parliamentary democracy” #isthatlikejedgarhoover
by Schnappi on May 8, 2012 at 2:36 pm
Looks like the HoRs is going back to chaos. Sigh.
by Puff, the Magic Dragon. on May 8, 2012 at 2:36 pm
Yes…where IS Abbott?
by Bushfire Bill on May 8, 2012 at 2:36 pm
This is disgusting language by Bishop and Pyne, unworthy of any MP.
by lizzie on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Whats anna burke doing
by my say on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Its all for replay on the tonight’s news part of the ongoing meme and to drown out any budget upside. abbott not enough to do it himself.
Not a good start by Burke either.
by dave on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Wow. Full tummy-up tantrum going on here.
by Bushfire Bill on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Yup, Pyne and Mesma speaking to the media.
Look over here, forget the economy, look to our dignity! Harry is God! Bring back Harry! Mesma loves him.
by imacca on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm
Yeah wanting Harry as Speaker had nothing to do with Parliamentary numbers you hypocrites.
by guytaur on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm
There he is.
by Puff, the Magic Dragon. on May 8, 2012 at 2:37 pm

by my say on May 8, 2012 at 2:38 pm
NBN used for political advertising? And for this we suspend Parl???
by lizzie on May 8, 2012 at 2:38 pm
This reminds me of the GOP’s tactics. Trash the standard of the parliament in order to advocate for smaller government.
by spur212 on May 8, 2012 at 2:38 pm
Coaliton has ceded economic management to Labor.
by guytaur on May 8, 2012 at 2:38 pm
Annabel Crabb@annabelcrabb
Respect for Parliament “reached its nadir” with the “suborning of Slipper”: Pyne powers on.
by Schnappi on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
What an awful deputy Speaker.
by Muskiemp on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
The Deputy Speaker is just letting this crap go on.
by Puff, the Magic Dragon. on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
my say, it’s not question time yet. Just a motion to enable debate on a motion to remove the Speaker. Question time should proceed following this.
by ltep on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
The Deputy Speaker is useless – they just run over her.
by janice2 on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
Albo responds.
by guytaur on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
People are right royally sick of the trashing of parliament by the Opposition. Well, they should be.
Btw, IMHO the Opposition have decided to treat Anna Burke like garbage. They keep ignoring her rulings.
by C@tmomma on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
So, do Albo and Julia get to reply to this crap?
Anna Burke getting rolled over at the moment. Hope she can do better than this in the future.
Albo up.
by imacca on May 8, 2012 at 2:39 pm
Go Albo! Go you good thing!
by C@tmomma on May 8, 2012 at 2:40 pm
We know now where the *kicking to death* expression can from – thats always been the aim – thats what they are trying to do.
by dave on May 8, 2012 at 2:40 pm
Exactly. Part of the campaign by headlines approach.
by Son of foro on May 8, 2012 at 2:40 pm
Thank god for Albo. The ALP really need to stand up to these kind of tactics
by spur212 on May 8, 2012 at 2:40 pm
Pyne talking to the cross benchers. Wilkie talking to Crook.

Albo giving Pyne a lesson in the technicalities of Parliament.
by imacca on May 8, 2012 at 2:42 pm
Bring back Slipper.
by Muskiemp on May 8, 2012 at 2:42 pm
Albo rightly points out that the substantive motion is against the Constitution.
However, Rad Hadley’s listeners don’t know this. Neither do the bogan viewers of the commercial TV networks.
I’ll bet my house that the impossibility of this motion ever getting through is not mentioned tonight.
by Bushfire Bill on May 8, 2012 at 2:42 pm
my say @ 1691
It was one of the panel members, Kate Miller-Heidke.
Not anyone I was previously aware of as my taste in music is probably a little different.
