Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

The Coaliton is running an election campaign now. It is for the votes of the cross benches.
by guytaur on May 8, 2012 at 4:00 pm
victoria – Albo said, when Mirrabella, started “To the member for Indi, we haven’t gone after you but if you want to go down that road, we can”. She shut up.
Roaldon1000 – yes, it is all for the news bulletins that night and it is always shown with Abbott in the best possible light. Usually shows JG answering forcefully – ergo, good Abbott/Oppn, bad PM/Labor. It never fails – the media has been programmed to perfection for Abbott.
I guess PB is an outlet for those of us who have to suffer when we see the never ending media negativity for Labor. Thanks to William and Crikey who keep the site going.

True. But it is also costing the LNP power.

Unfortunately he achieved precisely what he wanted – prime time coverage of the Government on the backfoot with the libs slagging them, left right and centre.
He is even getting pyne etc to do the dirty work – while he stays out of reach.
Only in parliament and people watching are not dumb ,a news bite would not show much, even if mentioned.
by Schnappi on May 8, 2012 at 4:01 pm
You assume that it is only the Thomson matter that’s dragging down Labor’s vote ATM. Not so.

BH
Thanks. So if the coalition want to keeo at it, the Member for Indie is fair game. I love it!
by victoria on May 8, 2012 at 4:02 pm
Oh Dear
Thomson is facing a penalty not exceeding 20 penalty units.
by ruawake on May 8, 2012 at 4:02 pm
Slipper and Thompson will be news for months. Can’t see any early legal resolution in either case. It’s the nature of the law, and process.(OPT would know.) That means no clear air for JG. It will remain messy – and there’s absolutely nothing see can do about it.
by al palster on May 8, 2012 at 4:03 pm
The takeaway IS that it works.
Media love it and the libs keep bowling up the same over and over and people who only see a bit of news in 20 second grabs see this same message reinforced over and over – so they ask how can this NOT be true?
We know different – but its hard to change opinions with it being reinforced over and over.
Only wish I was wRONg.
by dave on May 8, 2012 at 4:03 pm
]What effing dummy wrote this? You need an ABSOLUTE majority to get an SSO through. The Speaker even pointed this out. Can these journos understand English? Do they know anything about the House they’re supposed to be reporting on?]
All they know is that the government (and JG) is ‘embattled’, so absolutely everything has to be reported that way.
by rishane on May 8, 2012 at 4:04 pm
Do you think I could use PB 24/7 as an outlet for whinging about media negativity and bias against the Greens
by Pegasus on May 8, 2012 at 4:04 pm
I think we’ve seen they are not worried and won’t be intimidated.

Albo did forget to mention the other Liberal Senator from SA who is up on fraud and misrepresentation charges, Sean Edwards.
by C@tmomma on May 8, 2012 at 4:05 pm
That maybe so but i can’t see the impact or the interst on the greater unwashed, so to speak, lasting that long.

Why did you link to an untrue story that said the member for Cowper did not vote in the division to suspend standing and sessional orders, when a simple check of the House live minutes would have shown you he did?
Are you this sloppy in all your links?

One thing I noticed, the PM did not look fazed at all by the SSSO. I guess she was expecting them.
by victoria on May 8, 2012 at 4:09 pm
Peg – I don’t think you can complain about the way the media has shown Christine Milne since she became leader. She is not questionned aggressively or misreported in the same way Labor is. In fact many in the media are Green supporters. Bernard Keane is one of your mainstays and gives you a great run in his articles.
Murdoch is a different matter but Fairfax gives you a pretty good run.

by Lyne Lady on May 8, 2012 at 4:12 pm
Well, at least we know where Grattan lies: their number one citation for why the government should resign.
All this quoting of media articles is bullshit, of course. Anyone can write a media piece, and then it automatically becomes Holy Writ?
Rubbish.

And loved the way JG said wtte “they’ve wasted yet another question time” . . . “not interested in the economy” . . . “LOTO could have been in lock-down with the budget” . . . “but has not interest in the economy of this country” . . . “except to talk it down”
and Albo “this is the 51st time in the 43rd parliament . . .” etc.
The Opposition are a joke.
They’re trashing parliamentary conventions as a matter of course.
Their legacy? Shame.

Lynchpin and Gary I don’t disagree and I’m not sure the government can do much more than they are in any case. It’s a crappy (pardon the language) period in politics and it all goes back to the numbers.

Glowing with pride
Or embarrassment
Given, of course, the “raised eyebrows” of her colleagues over her early call for JG to fall on her sword?
by kezza2 on May 8, 2012 at 4:18 pm
They should be putting out press release after press release after press release, saying this sort of stuff. Put the pressure on, keep churning them out, fight for the airspace and headlines.
Not much good just saying it for the few fans watching QT.

(1) The Coalition motion was an SSSO, which has to have an absolute majority – 76 votes – which they have never been able to muster, even no one has been kicked out by the speaker.
The SSSO is just a move to get the rants into Hansard.
(2) I think you’ll find that Swan is “paired”, as is normal, esp on Budget Day.

Do not give excuses. The behaviour of the LNP is appalling. I doubt Labor would act in exactly the same way to get different results. I am not saying Labor is pure just that I doubt Labor would sink that low. Labor fights dirty but it does seem to respect tradition and precedent even at its dirtiest.
by guytaur on May 8, 2012 at 4:21 pm
They do. But the MSM is far more interested in Abbott’s stunts and Opposition press releases.

Verballing – I didn’t and don’t complain about the media’s treatment of the Greens. I don’t on PB nor out in the real world.
Instead, as I did on the weekend, I engage one-on-one and in groups of real people in the real world about the positive and cogent vision and policies of the Greens Party.
Seriously,
Milne became leader how many days ago?

It just doesn’t get published, let alone reported.

Gary: wishful thinking.
The budget might enable Labor & Gillard to recover a few percentage points, but too much damage has been done to the Labor brand.

Suggest u give your tongue a rest or it might sustain an injury being so much out of your mouth and therefore vulnerable
by Pegasus on May 8, 2012 at 4:25 pm
I agree 100%. I have no idea how it can be blunted. It’s becoming increasingly obvious that the electorate don’t care about the intellectual process behind policy development. They don’t care about the passion, commitment and courage it takes to get these policies from a spark of an idea to a working, implemented benefit to the community. Yet, it’s these very processes that they carry out everyday in their jobs and their lives.
It puzzles and saddens me.
by Ian on May 8, 2012 at 4:26 pm
I just had a quick look at the PM’s press releases going back to the beginning of this year and couldn’t find anything of the sort. I know the PM has to be careful about respecting the office, but someone should be sending these out day after day after day.
