Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

  3. Govt scraps company tax cut

    Published 6:16 PM, 8 May 2012 Last update 6:23 PM, 8 May 2012

    QUICK SUMMARY | FULL STORY | BUDGET 2012 | ECONOMY | POLITICS

The federal government has reportedly scrapped a promise to cut the company tax rate.

Labor promised to use revenue from its new mining tax to cut the corporate tax rate from 30 per cent to 29 per cent.

Instead the $3.6 billion budget saving will be used to fund upfront payments to help low and middle-income families cope with cost-of-living pressures.

A typical family earning $85,000 with two kids will receive a $1830 upfront payment.

Treasurer Wayne Swan is due to hand down his budget at 7.30pm (AEST) but, in what appears to be a deliberate ploy by the government, details have been leaked to selected media outlets.

The budget provides a seed payment of $1 billion for the National Disability Incentive Scheme, $500 million for dental health and $250 million for e-health.

It defers a commitment to increase overseas aid in a move that saves nearly $3 billion.

Cracking down on golden handshake payments will save nearly $200 million, while ending the ending the away-from-home allowance after one year saves $1 billion.

The surplus in 2012/13 is forecast to be $1.5 billion, rising to $2 billion the year after, $5.3 billion in 2014/15 and $7.5 billion in 2015/16.

The decision to scrap the tax cut would not upset too many small business owners, a tax expert said.

  4. However, she keeps making very basic stupid mistakes (the presser on Sunday being the most recent example)….giggling while looking over the budget papers with Swan perhaps a more recent but less substantial example actually…..

This is probably the rubbishy bit of rubbish you have posted. The Gillard – Swan stuff was a picture opportunity for the press photographers to get still shots for their papers. TV crews of course filmed the pic-fac and ran with it.

It is done by people every day, if you had ever worked in the media you would realise it.

I am not predicting 116, just extrapolating current polling.

I suspect they will get a lot more than 79 given the current situation, unless there is a paradigm shift between now and the election (possible, but no sign of it yet).

  7. No, ML, the funny thing is that you never see the contradiction in your own opinion.
    Ever.

Whenever you’re pulled up on a position, you shift the goal posts.
    That’s your contradiction. Not mine.

You don’t address differences head on
    you shift your position.

Because, in reality, it is too hard for you to justify your position.

You’re tied into a party that has no principles; no scruples.

do you ever see the irony of your party accusing Labor of trying to cling to power at all costs, when its your party’s sole raison d’etre to cling to power at all costs, trashing everything in its path along the way, including well-established institutions, the fundamentals of our society (like, for instance, our justice system and innocent until proven guilty)?

You can’t justify it, so you just shift the goal posts.
And that’s what’s pathetic in the Lib voter who votes a particular way.
    What are you doing?
Hanging on to a hope or a prayer that your party will find some principles?

You’re not going to find it with this lot.

I don’t have any problem with her sitting with Swan and giving the media a “feed”. My problem with her is that even a dead simple, kindergarten level activity like this (just sit there looking competent and in control and professional- it shouldnt be hard for a PM!!!!). She sat kinda looking over Swan’s shoulder like a schoolkid copying in an exam! Like “Ooohh, show me what lovely numbers you have come up with Swannie”. She giggled like a child- how would that have looked with those having something cut from their budgets? She just does not get these things….politics 1.01.

  12. Mod Lib,

What I find hilarious is that you elevate disloyalty, dissembling and prevarication to a noble art. Sticking with my Labor principles has never let me down.

Meanwhile you conduct your own regular agony aunt session here at PB as you splash about like a beached whale trying to rationalise the illogicality of your political views.

At the end of the day, no one takes any particular notice of your views, because you’re prepared to change them at any particular moment that strikes your fancy. There’s something to be said for consistency. Mainly, it’s about character.

Just because I am so obtuse, why don’t you quote my post that you claim is contradictory and explain how it is contradictory.

I am not saying post it and say “see, it is contradictory”. I am talking about posting my words and then explaining how you see them as saying opposite things.

I once spent part of an afternoon with a camera crew getting “natural shots” of me birdwatching. They sat me on a log and moved me around for ages until they were satisfied. I have never felt so twisted and uncomfortable in my life. But in the newspaper I looked relaxed and “natural”.

The Federal Opposition narrowly fails to suspend standing orders in Parliament after Peter Slipper vacates the Speaker's chair.

I will likely be crucified for this, but Gillard has never looked comfortable being PM, and it is one of her major problems, but that is just opinion (albeit shared by about 75% of the electorate given approval ratings!).
