Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

Well you loved the greatest bribers in Oz political history a.k.a. Howard and Costello so don’t try playing high and mighty around here. At least Labor are taking from the rich and giving to the less well off whereas those two bandits named above took from the less well off and gave some of it back pre-election. That was their track record and I’m sure you were a happy clapper every time

Sorry to take so long to answer.
I was trying to make the point in my post to ruawake that it does indeed take a lot of effort to “look natural”. Models are trained to it. The PM is not, and admits she hates being photographed.
Also, I bet the photographers didn’t do much to ensure a relaxed pic. Why should they? “Awkward Julia” is part of their story.

  13. Interesting article on Abbott from 2007:

[The sad fact is Abbott does not lie well. And in politics that is a brutal disqualification for further advancement.

The first lie that Abbott had to front for as Health Minister came swiftly after the 2004 election. About 400,000 patients lost out when Howard pulled the rug on Abbott’s “rock solid, iron-clad” commitment that the thresholds of the Medicare safety net would not be tightened.

A clearly distressed Abbott briefly considered resigning before rationalising that he made the election pledge “absolutely believing it to be true”. This was Jesuitical parsing and Abbott knew it.

That’s an interesting assertion. IF only there were some facts to back it up

The biggest problem with the current budget is that Rudd/Swan delivered massive personal tax cuts to the highest tax brackets.

George Mega has continually pointed to this tax cut as the biggest contributor to loss of federal revenue

by Mr Squiggle on May 8, 2012 at 7:21 pm

  17. Although I vowed to myself I would never read it again, a copy of the Courier Mail was the only paper available to read in my local eatery lunchtime today.

I can’t recall the reporter’s name but he was gushing and full of crap about the deep, deep trouble the government is in and illustrated his point with a reference (photo and all) to the Hindenburg disaster. Apparently it was the 75th anniversary last week of this tragedy.

I can’t see the connection myself. Is he saying the government is full of hot (volatile) air, it’s going to crash and burn, it’s run by Nazi’s, it’s moving to America?

Another little topic (different reporter) was that the French President-elect “fielded” phone calls from Obama, Cameron, etc. Wouldn’t he have just answered them, or did he get his assistant to screen them first and then decide which ones he would take.

“Fielded”? Do journalists know nothing at all? Don’t answer that – I’ve been watching Leveson. :)

  21. George Mega has continually pointed to this tax cut as the biggest contributor to loss of federal revenue

Well if he did he is wrong, the Tax cuts cost $42 billion, the loss of tax revenue due to the GFC is $150 billion. It may be true to say no tax cuts would have meant no deficit but it would also have meant pain for wage earners.

by ruawake on May 8, 2012 at 7:25 pm

  22. That’s an interesting assertion. IF only there were some facts to back it up

What about the Howard years??? Eleven of them??? Where did his tax cuts come from???

What about the Minerals Resource Tax and the increase in the tax free threshold three fold as just two examples of assisting the less fortunate in the country by the current Labor government?

    Chalk and cheese.

If there’s one thing I understand it’s the word “contradictory”
Nothing to do with agreement, but holding two irreconcilable positions.
You pretend to hold one, then swap to the other.
    It’s not something I do.
But you do it, with monotonous regularity.

Lots of people take me to task about what I post.
    I endeavour to answer them.

I don’t just dismiss them out of hand.
I acknowledge when I either don’t have an answer, haven’t thought about it,
or I dispute what they have said, with evidence.

    There’s the difference.

Given your propensity to manoeuvre when peeps question you, I doubt you’d understand.

Someone in her office just does not get it. That media photo shot was the case in point. Why in the name of Dickens did she not have her OWN copy of the budget. The angle was awkward. Not rocket science.

Also why was she looking (and Swan) at the pretty picture bits – MUCH better to be seen pouring over some dull tables

Benefit of the boom …… Lol

What boom we are broke, the government is slashing jobs. There is a surplus however of Labor spin.

I was very impressed with a post several hundred back. It pointed out that both the liberal and labor government have guaranteed a minimum level of borrowing to prevent the the collapse of the Federal Government bond market (a minimum size is required to keep it liquid), and things have got to the stage where money is being borrowed and reinvested to keep it going.

Against this high level of knowledge we have the above crap from rummel.

  47. Not much point getting stuck into our resident, Tame-Cat Conservatives who come here.

They are entitled to have their converse say and they remind us of the slave who was reputedly put in the chariot of the victorious Roman general to remind him that, “You are not a god!”

Progressive voters need such inputs as often the above TCCs remind us why we think the way we do while puzzling the way they do.

In fact the TCCs are always a paradox to me. I always have difficulty understanding how anyone with any real insight could vote conservative.

The conservative position, at the end of the day, is as its name suggests, a do-nothing position.

As Romney in the States has put it, to give some kind of context, “socialists” or wtte are kind of dreamers while “conservatives” just “get on with it as the right thing to do” or wtte.

The converse is true of course.

Once you scratch below the surface their simplistic view of life is essentially boiled down to “God, Flag and Queen” and, of course, lower taxes, for them.

Conservatism is lazy politics. Say everything in opposition and do nothing in government until you have to – just react.

Nonetheless, apart from the real odd-balls who come here for a bit of fun, our TCC’s are okay. They do try, against considerable odds, to put their point of view although this does does get up some noses.

    Tolerance it everything!
