Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

Opposition too disorganised/panicked to front up on ABC24.
Says it all.
Meanwhile Oakeshott, in their place, is the voice of reason.
by Henry on May 8, 2012 at 9:30 pm
What!?
You had to go back to 1994 to find the REAL Tony Abbott.
Are you for real? Are you ModLib in disguise?
Are you prepared to vote for him NOW?
Don’t let 18 years get in the way.
by kezza2 on May 8, 2012 at 9:30 pm
I’m not sure if Abbott needs to be destroyed. I get the impression that he is self destructing before our eyes. It may of course just be my perception, but it seems as if even his standard phrases are “cutting through” less effectively. It’s as if he is losing confidence and the confected anger he used to muster is fading away.
Perhaps the Government is messing with his head just by getting on with governing and not being deflected by his tactics. It must ultimately get very discouraging for him that he has been going on like a pork chop all this time and nothing substantive has resulted form it – he hasn’t really had a single policy victory.
Labor has also finally started to break away (even if very tentatively) from the consensus that everything business and the wealthy want have to be gone along with or dire things will result. Howard certainly fostered this and Labor eventually won in 2007 by basically accepting it but promising to manage better. However, the various polls that show strong support for some quite “left wing” policy positions show that there is actually much to be gained by breaking away from this consensus. This budget certainly could not have been delivered by the Coalition – and I don’t know if you could say that about Swan’s four previous budgets. As a leftie from way back I can only applaud.

I remember now. I heard about the provocation law on the ABC radio Law Report, I think. Taking it out may deny a defence to women who have battered spouse syndrome and believe they may be killed but are not actually being attacked at the time. e.g. Belting spouse over the head when he is asleep because she thinks he is going to end up killing her.
It is a complex issue, if I remember. How do you allow provocation in one case but deny it in others?

by shellbell on May 8, 2012 at 9:35 pm
Yes… whinge loud enough and eventually Wayne listens.
Actually, this whole Budget is a sort of reverse stimulus. We’ve had years of “BER Fail” and “Pink Batts disaster”.
So finally when the chickens come home to roost – real cuts to expenditure and a major withdrawl of government largesse – the same ones who were mocking stimulus, saying it wasn’t the government but their own spit that got them through, are now squealing that they’ve been left behind.

by middle man on May 8, 2012 at 9:38 pm
I agree sort of. He needs to be done slow enough so that he doesn’t get dumped till late 2012 /early 13 i think. That said i reckon he’s toast as soon as the polls get any better than ALP 47 TPP.
However, if they pick anyone other than Turnbull as leader then why would they bother? Still, i do dream of Mesma as LOTO.

Agree with a lot of this. I watched him carefully today and he just didn’t look confident to me – not that it means much.
But his minders are trying to change his image – less swim suits/ cycling gear more slick suits – trying to make him look foreman material.
But he is still a prick and most know it – particular his own mob.
by dave on May 8, 2012 at 9:40 pm
But abbott said from memory he did not want to cut busi ess tax
But i would think the boost of extra money out there will help business in a more productive way
by my say on May 8, 2012 at 9:40 pm
And you have a better option, a poll of the opinion pieces in the morning papers, the dynamics of the nightly blog rants or perhaps a vote on twitter, no facts provided.
by fredn on May 8, 2012 at 9:41 pm
You don’t
You frame the law so that it takes into account actual provocation. Not a fkd up law based on possession.
It is not enough, as shellbell hopes, to trust the jury. Because the jury has to uphold the law as it stands.
The law has to be changed.

The Herald-Sun has an internal conflict over Robin Hood.
AFTER four Budgets playing Father Christmas, this is Wayne Swan’s Robin Hood Budget.
THIS is not a Robin Hood budget – just lots of robbing the poor to give to the poor.
