Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

Tanks are useful for fighting land battles with non-guerrilla armies. Australia has not done that since the Korean War. There is less and less of this kind of war. They are also useful for crushing protests if you are a brutal regime and Australia better not be getting one of those.
Also Australia is an island and so an Army is not as much use to us as other and so should e less of a focus. We may not even need a standing army to defend us. Our defence should focus on the Navy and the Air Force.
Not all defence spending is good defence spending.

Frame that claim from Robb – a budget surplus of $15M under the LNP. Anyone think that is credible?
by Rossmore on May 8, 2012 at 11:03 pm
@TheKouk is tweeting Lateline – which is very good as Alberici gifted airtime for a buisiness hack to whinge. TheKouk corrected his stupid points regarding mining boom, growth and productivity.
And now we have Penny Wong, a class act. Alberici tries to interrupt, but she’s not having it.
And now we have Robb – and it’s trust, “cooking books”, bribed, increasing debt .. eeech
So glad for this tweeting thing, @TheKouk is very good.
(In answer to Robb comparing OS debt) @TheKouk “The last time the US had a debt level as low as Australia’s peak level of 9.6% was 1918 #lateline”
@TheKouk “Mr Robb misunderstands the difference between gross and net debt ”
“10 year govt bond yields at all time low after Budget: a big tick from global investors”
It’s good to have an economist tweeting, whilst Alberici allows bullshit from Robb be freely transmitted.

Swamprat – oh my god – Tanks were lost in Battle? Really???
No one has yet to build an undestroyable tank and never will. When you run over a mine that will lift a 60 tonne tank and land it on its’ roof – it’s pretty hard to avoid being destroyed. Mine warfare is a bitch.
Conversely they look like pin cushions with fin rounds sticking out of them when shot at from the front by other tanks.
Having served in Leopard AS1′s I am a big fan of the Leopard 2. M1 was a better by – cheaper and better interoperability.

Dio
According to one of the articles I read on the West’s Rose was reported to have killed at least one of Fred’s children and participated in the mutilation of a couple of others not to mention her physical and mental torture of the other children.
In regard to Bathory, it is difficult to find real facts but even taking into acount the fictionalisation of her history over time there would have to be some basis of fact. Reading on SK it is rare to find a female one and those that do don’t usually kill strangers, it is usually families but if they do it is usually for financial reasons. Male SK on the other had usually kill for sexual reasons, rarely financial and not ofter from their own families preferring strangers.

And this is one of the benefits of any pokies legislation, firstly it stops the pain that families are feeling and secondly almost every dollar not spent in those filthy machines will be spent in the retail sector.

by The Finnigans on May 8, 2012 at 11:13 pm
@2853 – you are obviously unaware of the use of tanks in Vietnam. Perhaps you should go and ask some Infantry veterans about whether tanks were wanted in low level/asymetric threat warfare.
Tanks can be highly effective in asymetric warfare – they provide protection, mobility, firepower, communications as well as strategic weight and psychological presence.
The 3% real growth was to catch up after the Hawke/Keating Fiasco of the 1987 Defending Australia White Paper by Dibb that thought we should be focussed on three men and a dog. Jesus Christ ona stick – East Timor almost didn’t happen because the Army had been so gutted by that stupid policy approach.
Can you forecast 15 to 20 years into the future and tell me we will not be required to be in a conventional battlefield, either in Australia or anwhere else?
Tank regiments are like Dinner Suits – you don’t need them very often but when you do, nothing else is acceptable.
