Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

That sounds like something that should not be discussed in the public arena. It could prejudice a fair trial in criminal matters. Prima Facie it looks like fraud investigation is needed.

That’s the problem here; there are the civil matters and criminal matters. Where one ends and the other starts seems a bit grey.

by rummel on May 7, 2012 at 5:56 pm

  6. This is not an I told you so but I said last week that if I had to give an opinion on Thomson it would be that he was ok on the criminal matters although the severity of the civil matters would prevent him from getting back into the Labor party as a MP. It looks like that will be the case. Mind you that won’t prevent him sitting as an independent.

  14. Early days but a rough distribution of civil charges by FWA based on the report would be:

    (a) Thomson – 160
    (b) Jackson – 10
    (c) Williamson – 10-11

Who on earth are those 42 percent who believe the LNP would be better during another GFC?? Honestly, how stupid are these people being polled? Blind Freddy can see that the Libs have no idea about the economy.

Oh in my circles in Sydney nobody;’s interested in Slipper or Thomson. Last week over after work drinks it was all about the NSW police and their violent tactics and interest rates…Julia is basically regarded as a disappointment..

  21. Any issue of sub judice might apply to criminal trials before a jury. However, for civil cases heard by judges the test to prove sub judice is much more rigorous.

What is that all about re Mark Day?

I suspect it’s Jonathan Holmes little joke about the new regulatory body, funded by government and with powers to impose fines and sanctions on news outlets, which is to be headed by a retired judge.

Must be 5-year terms – and maybe Mark Day is going to be invited onto the panel.

    Just a guess.

  23. FWA effectively call Thomson a liar (with evidence to back them up) for every claim they make about him. Every defence they find is false and misleading.

  24. However, for civil cases heard by judges the test to prove sub judice is much more rigorous.

It would be nigh on impossible to make such an application. No judge is going to say, I can’t hear the case because I have read Tim Blair, Andrew Bolt etc

by Von Kirsdarke on May 7, 2012 at 6:08 pm

  26. @310 BG My understanding was the FWA is going to take action in the Federal Court. What has happened here is the report on which they are basing their charges have been outlined. At least one of those being accused procliams his innocence.

Therefore the findings they make are at this stage subject to a court process. We have been assured that Liberals place great faith in allowing such processes to run their course.

    by roaldan1000 on May 7, 2012 at 6:09 pm

  27. bg

Not so. If so criminal action would be taken against MR Thomson for Fraud.
We do not know the rules governing use of credit cards yet. We do not know who the authorising officer was that the HSU council had to oversee that credit card use.
If one of those people was Williamson or Jackson it could be very murky indeed.

    My say.

I’m very happy to see at least two Australian parents will put the money away for the correct reason. I doubt there will be many more then that. My question is why would the government not hold onto the cash untill the end of Jan and hand it out at the start of the new school year when there would be a greater chance of the cash going to its intended purpose.
