Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

  5. Anyone who works for The Australian and is not embarrassed after today’s front page is beyond help.

I cannot for the life of me see what benefit anyone at News Ltd is getting from the only national newspaper being turned into a complete joke. Becoming a laughing stock hinders rather than helps its campaigns against things like the NBN.

Some will disagree, but there are really good journos on the paper who have broken serious news and carried out proper investigations over the years. A country needs a newspaper of record.

The ever more hysterical efforts being made to unseat what is supposed to be a doomed government anyway are doing irreversible damage to The Australian (and the ABC).

  6. Greens Rachel Siewert on the Budget and unemployed people:
    http://rachel-siewert.greensmps.org.au/content/media-releases/greens-call-systemic-welfare-reform-budget-fails-unemployed-australians

She begins with the good news about the budget followed by:

“The rate of Newstart remains $130 per week below the poverty line.

“The newly announced $210 supplement payment for Newstart equated to a rise of only $4 per week, well short of the $50 per week that has been widely called for. It is an insult to unemployed Australians.

“The one positive for people who become unemployed is the doubling of the Liquid Assets Test, but importantly, this does not help people already receiving the payment.

“It remains clear that a system wide review of income support needs to be an absolute priority.

“Our current system of ad-hoc payments leads to marginalisation and poverty. A smarter, modern approach to social security is essential to meet Australia’s future needs,” Senator Siewert concluded.

Lenore Taylor on the Budget concludes:
    http://www.smh.com.au/business/federal-budget/shortterm-plan-for-dire-times-20120508-1ybix.html

The politician who has the courage and the political capital to explain a long-term budget strategy will be bringing home something really worth having.

  10. The news.com.au budget calculator says if you earn $50,000 you will be $303 better off for the year. How is it calculated?

In the same article it says the “for a person earning $50,000 a year that will mean an extra $2,053 in the pocket for 2012-13″.

Where did the $1750 disappear to?

  31. I am right about the height of the microphones. Swan has problems projecting his voice and has to lean in to get more volume when he is making a point. It also makes him looked hunched and lacking confidence. He needs that microphone raised. It is a matter of accessibility and should be addressed as a matter of importance.

  32. I am happy to sacrifice a few pleasures to help save the planet.

The planet doesn’t need “saving”, nor was the carbon price ever about that in any case.
