Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

I agree. I will refrain from giving him a serve in that case. I want Oppos to be trodden down, but do not want to see anyone suffer an illness.
There are plenty of others to kick.

The government is really flaying the opposition over this school kids thing. I reckon Tone might have pulled the wrong rein on this one.
I think they might also be starting to regret their decision to get Slipper out of the chair. The government is now getting a free go at them – and isn’t the PM revelling in it? I hope Albo gets a go later too. Question time is interesting again. Thanks Tone.

As wiser people than I have noted, the Canberra press gallery love to report on politics as if it is a sporting event.
They would be well served to cast a look at the English Premier League in the last few weeks.
Just a month ago Manchester United were eight points clear with six games to go. The race was all over, all the correspondents opined, without exception. Like the press gallery the English football correpsndents hunt in packs and like the safety of common ground.
The main challengers Manchester City were duds. The manager had lost the dressing room, he could not handle his team and was being undermined by key players. There was no way back.
Manchester United’s lead was unassailable, their coach was too experienced, he had won the mind games, the team would not make enough mistakes for City to get back into the race. This was all over. They should just hand over the trophy and get on with it.
This weekend Manchester City need a win at home against a struggling team to claim the title. All the correspondents agree the manager is a genius, he has handled difficult players brilliantly, kept his head down and worked hard when everyone else had given up. All his team is right behind him.
It was Manchester City that changed the momentum, the media just followed. It’s decent parallel for the government at the moment.
Keep getting decent results and let the media play catch up.

I think they’ve got the message now that every time Thomson’s name gets raised it’s going to be followed closely by Ashby’s. They’ll get a chance to rant in a moment, but it’s a damp squib as far as QT goes.

Bit tired of both sides pitching EVERYTHING to families.
What is good for the economy is good for families, singles, the young and old. Make decisions for everyone! Pitch the benefits to everyone!

LOTO’s “wait and see” comments “Code for him and Clive and Gina turning up on families’ doorsteps and demanding a refund of their Family Tax Benefit increase” -Gillard has hit the right note now, and should keep singing this tune.

by Puff, the Magic Dragon. on May 9, 2012 at 3:00 pm
The problem with the MC/MU analogy is that they will probably end up on the same points with MC winning on goal differences and we don’t need a repeat of 2010.

Sossman,
I agree. Both sides must have research to say that is where there is the most chance to shift votes.
Labor does stuff for most groups, but families get all the air time.
by Puff, the Magic Dragon. on May 9, 2012 at 3:02 pm
Yess sossman agree, it could be pointed out that,
Extra monies going to families benefts the country as a whole.
Smal business. I was thinking about shoes shop, i think parents dont always.
Upgrade shoes, as quick as they could,
Also if tney have extra parents may slend in other areas hair cuts for children
I have noticed the anount of little girls with hair in eyes, ect of school age
Then also ectra fruit veghies ect.
Yess sossman agree working families pyne seems to love this word so move on
