Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

  22. If Thomson takes opportunity under privilige to detail any allegations against other union officials who Mr Abbott has raised to near sainthood then this could backfire quite badly.

Interesting to see if allegations that Libs colluded with Ashby get chased down any further. Abbott this morning said (under pressure) that he had no knowledge of Ashby allegations until he read the papers. Yet we know for certain Brough did and possibly Pyne. Abbott had better be squeaky clean now.

Let's talk about the cover of today's Australian
    BY LUKERYAN ON MAY 09 2012, 11:34AM

Look, I know journalism is a difficult calling in the modern age. I know that commercial interests have long since overtaken a policy of strict journalistic objectivity. I know that editorial policy is often dictated by people far above you in the food chain. I know that trying to make yourself completely devoid of political inclincation is almost impossible. And I know that much of modern journalism is a debasing, hurried business.

But none of these realisations, nothing in the past 26 years of steadily accumulating journalistic cynicism could have prepared me for what The Australian, our paper of national repute, put on its front cover today in response to the Budget:

  44. Mike Rann ‏ @Mike_Rann

Debt crisis? Australia's debt peaks as a percentage of GDP at 9.6% in 2011/12. That's like earning $100,000 a year and owing just $9,600.

Family with a $300,000 mortgage is now paying $3000 less a year than they did under the Libs. A surplus makes it easier for RBA to cut rates

There you go, Graham Richardson. Some ex Labor pollies still want to help their Party and that’s how it’s done. No need to sell your soul to Murdoch. He tore you apart when you were accused of improper behaviour and much more.

  45. Leroy 3925

    Good Catch.

    Conclusion

This isn't intended as a defence of the Government's Budget (I'm not enthused) or some partisan shot across the bows of the Liberal Party or even a real engagement with the content of the paper itself, but rather to suggest that if anyone involved in the production of this front cover looked at it and thought "You know what? This is exactly what a newspaper is meant to be" then they have no business using the title journalist. Just call yourselves propagandists and be done with it, because this thing is closer to the output of a Stalinist regime than anything contained in the 2012 Budget.
