Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

Seriously, I have just been doing some demographic/geographic statistical analysis using census data by electorate and a range of social variables.
The weirdest thing, the north shore seats stand out as an isolated cluster seperate from the rest of Australia. Warringah, North Sydney, Bradfield, MacKellar and throw in Wentworth for good luck.
by bluegreen on May 10, 2012 at 10:05 pm
Abbott’s such a low renter.
What, because the govt make us bend over a get rogered by the wealthy by shouldering their tax cuts – again – like every other budget time, its now ‘class war’?
Imagine that mediocre cliche churner in the PM chair. What an international embarassment.
This guy is as useless as a pile of old copies of The Australian, and as for Hockey, Ive heard better political arguments from my 8 year old.

And what are these great characteristics that we bogans on the North Shore possess according to your analysis, apart from the two heads that the Class Warfare crowd have already pointed out?
by Mick77 on May 10, 2012 at 10:08 pm
TP @ 6430
So why didn’t it sink in August 2010? The Rudd resignation under force of humiliation was done and dusted in June. That’s it. There were no further plays in the whole matter. If it was bad, it was bad then, Why would voters flee Labor because of Rudd’s dumping after the 2010 election when they knew about the dumping at the election.
Whatever damage to support Labor suffered because of the dumping of Rudd happened in 2010. The further loss of support has to be due to other reasons. If Rudd was still leader Labor would still be behind in the polls.
by Scrutineer on May 10, 2012 at 10:08 pm
Laocoon @6451,
Would it be right to suggest that what makes it even worse is a significant percentage of those still employed would be at the higher end of the income level, the very people that have failed to pay their fair share of tax for years and have been a root cause of the weak revenue stream in the Greek economy for decades.

Thomas,
With the greatest of respect, I think that is something of an overstatement. Let me be as pellucid as I possibly can be. The issue exists in such magnitude only in your own mind as a function of your propinquity to the Rudd period.
Apology: The above statement makes no sense but if I sounded just a little bit like Robert Jay QC on acid, I’m more than happy.

Rob O was talking on AM this morning re a code of conduct.
I think it would be a good idea. However it would have to be a code that covers standards for both the accused and the accuser.
Otherwise it is just a open invitation to continue with what the coalition have now determined is normal.

Really Rudd is bidding his time and will be back. Thomas Paine – some very good comments. Paul Howes and the like must be very concerned that their little plan has failed so badly. his buddy Kroger is losing his grip on the other side at the same time. The Rudd restoration will be just the panacea to crush the factions once and for all that is needed with a few crumbs thrown to them in the form of Shorten being installed as deputy. That will be the sweetest victory of them all. a victory for the true believers.
