Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

  9. There is a touch of PJK in your turn of phrase.

Lynchpin, I just DO NOT understand why Gillard doesnt slam him.

“It just is” – thats what his brain was able to make his jaw eject when asked why the Howard baby bonus was different to the schoolchild payment.

This should be on repeat (supplemented by any random snippet of ‘angry, but clueless, of North Sydney’ Hockey sounding off) with the warning “this person receives votes”.

I know its not popular to say it – but who like me recalls the health debate Abbott had with Rudd? Rudd gave him a COMPLETE BATH, like none Ive ever seen. Ever. In 25 years of watching debates. Its was embarassing to see the mismatch of intellects and political skills. If I was Abbott’s manager I would have reached for the towel.

The truth is Abbott’s an easy slam. An easy mark. Its simply disgraceful that the ALP has hobbled itself with people who wont or cant put this try-hard where he belongs: in the special bin reserved for failed oppo leaders who just werent up to it.

Really Rudd is bidding his time and will be back.

Considering that most leaders once they have lost the leadership leave parliament, this is probably what Rudd wants even after one unsuccessful attempt.

the problem is June 2010 has been distorted, erased, reinterpreted from the day it occurred – the vilification of rudd has been onoing on one side, and the mythology of the necessary leadership of JG (a long discredited strategy) – on the other side carbon has exploited mistrust of Julia but move it to a new target with a ferocity that would not have been possible without June 2010. So there are layers of hysteria, irrationality and subjectivity, towards and against both leaders, substituting for clear understanding of the motivation and dynamic of public opinion. these could also be corrected, intuitively and collectively, with a ruddstoration, and so great was offence of june 2010 that it could still occur say later this year. but the tenuousness of current government raises questions if there will opportunity to return to leadership issue. as TP says, if labor went into opposition at present it would stay there for a long time with mixed memory of unresolved and irrationality issues of mistrust – that could not readily be addressed or answered. barring an act of god jg and ws and their supporters will deeply destory the labor party for another generation of voters, through their unethical and amateurish impetuosity.

excuse me now i’ll duck the missiles

by geoffrey on May 10, 2012 at 10:39 pm

  27. Even if Rudd comes back it is to late the government will no matter lose the next election. The front bench ruined Rudd this year and have all but ensured that Labor will lose the next election in a Landslide. A landslide that will see Labor out of office federally for more than ten years. Shorten will never win Labor an election- never.
The next leader or person who should be groomed if he hangs on his seat which i admit now many will go should be Mark Butler.

Not looking forward to the States and Libs Federally running the country.

rudd’s mineral debates speeches were replayed in recent months on abc radio and yes he was very very good. the minerals stance was reactively overzealous to the reversal of climate and exagerrated need for strong policy – but who caused the change on climate, and who now is it self professed saviour?

Anyway the North Shore has always been distinct. Until the 70s/80s not only was it Liberal voting it was also almost exclusively PROTESTANT.

As you may or may not know in Sydney in 1970, you could equate Liberal/Presbyterian/wealthy and Labor/Catholic/poor – average. A demographic map overlay was almost an EXACT match for these three
