Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

Maybe hasn’t quite reached hatred, but strong dislike. I am a moderating influence.
BTW, I think you have been reading too many psychology books and your ideas on this are quite wrong. Some women supported her just because she was a woman initially. But I think she has been steadily losing them.

Cant quite say why but Andy Coulson keeps reminding me of Christopher Maurice Pyne. Disengenuity keeps coming to mind.

Zoidlord the PM is not being judged on how many bills she is getting passed in parliament. She may be being partly judged because people don’t like some of the key bills however she is being mainly judged on perceived errors of judgement and a lack of trust.
by davidwh on May 10, 2012 at 11:51 pm
Loathing of Gillard is not rational, therefore no point in researching “why”, but it’s out there, oh boy is it out there!

All the issues you raise will be solved with time. The judgement issue comes down to ongoing legal cases. The lack of trust goes to a lie. Not what JG said, but the one by the Coaliton that what she said was a lie and towns like Whyalla would be wiped out because of it. When that does not happen that too will vanish as an issue.
by guytaur on May 10, 2012 at 11:54 pm
Julia has been great at holding a motley team together and getting real stuff through parliament. She also has low poll ratings. If these do not change, she will probably see the writing on the wall and move aside. No need for all the vitriol, pro and con.

I like the colour of Andy’s tie. The sort of colour you wear if you would like to be taken seriously.

Seems to me you don’t have to go out into the street to find Gillard haters. The biggest haters are right here on this blog. And most of them claim to be Labor supporters.

I have asked the same question and she cannot articulate her feelings or what lies behind them. Sorry about that.
I can sort of understand that as, when I met Peter Costello at uni, I took an instant dislike to him but it took me some time to work out exactly why I was so repulsed.

None of this is from psychology or psychology books. I used theStockholm syndrome as a rough analogy that I though people may quickly understand. This is way before I ever opened a psych book.

What is about some women when it comes to women leaders !
by deblonay on May 10, 2012 at 11:57 pm
Those who were most vehement against NSW Labor for changing leaders so many times are now advocating it for federal Labor and expect it to now be a positive. Go figure.

by This little black duck on May 11, 2012 at 12:00 am
Gary its not my research other than the limited number of people I come in contact with. However the polls over an extended period are showing that to be the situation. Having said that I’m not one of those who believes the situation can be reversed with a leadership change because it will take more than that. Whoever leads the country had to be able to reach out and connect with people and the PM isn’t doing that at present.
by davidwh on May 11, 2012 at 12:00 am
I am NOT a Gillard hater. I disagree with her on some things (anti-gay, extreme support for USA even to Oz disadvantage…) and pissed off that she cannot articulate a “vision” for this country I can get excited about but I admire her obvious ability to get things done and her grace despite appalling treatment.

I have met such women as I have described, in smaller arenas. They are the ones who hate the woman who is the first President of the local football club or the first female manager of the council works department.
Without access to those positions, men cannot deliver the ancillary benefits these women would enjoy.

Puffy, you have bought too much into the misogyny story. Sure, there are misogynists around, but I think they are relatively small in number and probably outweighed by women who will support JG on the basis of gender.
We have a female Governor General, Governor of NSW, Governor of Qld for example. We have quite a number of female MPs and Ministers who do not evoke the same reaction as does JG. Think about it.

The question is not leadership change, it is WHAT the Labor Party needs to do to get authority. What is your advice, please?
by swamprat on May 11, 2012 at 12:07 am
Gary the concensus here is that the politics are right, the tactics are right and the opposition are fools. So why the disconnect as indicated by the polls. But sure it’s an opinion but an opinion that appears to be supported by the situation the government finds itself in.
Anyway off to bed, night all.
