Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

  1. Laura Tingle says there’s a very, very, real chance of an election before the end of the month

    http://www.afr.com/p/opinion/surplus_lifebuoy_labor_can_cling_ycYMuGZlNMSQK6ZS8aMrcL

I have a lot of time for Laura Tingle, so I’m sorry to see her drop the ball on the following point:

If that were to happen – and there are various scenarios about what processes would be involved – we would be facing the likelihood of the writs being issued for a House of Representatives election by June 8 at the latest for an election held in late July.

The significance of this timing is that the earliest date on which a “normal” election for the House and half the Senate can be called is August 3. An election before that date would put future elections for the two houses out of “sync”, and mean a (presumed) incoming Abbott government would face a hostile Senate.

The earliest date for a normal election is indeed August 3 – but next year, rather than this year. So whether the election happens in late July, August or any time in the second half of this year or the first half of the next, the houses will be out of sync and Abbott will face his hostile Senate.

  2. I have a lot of time for Laura Tingle, so I’m sorry to see her drop the ball on the following point:

You’d think someone would have picked it up before publication, assuming it was an honest mistake. Though the skeptical part of me wonders if it got through in part because it adds to the impression of IMMINENT ELECTION/CHAOS that has so successfully been kept alive since the election.

  15. Poor journos: having to try and find something serious about last night’s rant by Abbott.

So Coorey picks on “$50 billion savings”. A number pulled out of Abbott’s arse makes front page news.

I do wonder sometimes whether the punters really do expect Abbott to get rid of all the things he says he’s getting rid of.

Last night he spoke about the NBN and the MRRT, linking them in with the Carbon Tax in the same sentence, as if these measures were hated out there.

They are in fact popular, quite popular… everywhere except on 2GB and similar shock jock platforms, where they are disparaged on an almost minute-by-minute basis.

I do suspect that the punters reckon Abbott will end up keeping these programs, that they can get rid of Gillard but not the goodies. It’s a pure Reality TV mentality: voting has no consequences.

At the moment we are seeing a battle, not between Labor and Liberal, or even the government and the people, but between the government and the political journalists.

The latter make up the game and the rules of the game. They are the referee and the commentators in the media box far above the playing field. They bring out the oranges and give the massages when a thigh gets corked.

Great link Finns – The Kouk hits the nail on the head with the real story

Good to see Katter will put a stop to the “kangaroo court” – looks like Thomson will get censured but will be safe for a while yet

I see Labor is continuing the “class warfare” – nothing to lose so why not – it seems like Abbott and the Liberals think you are only a “hard working Australian” if you earn over $100k (insert angry face)

NAB boss on Radio National was good – mentioned he doesn’t worry about what hasn’t happened yet when asked re the 1% company tax cut, said if there was a change of government he would face a 1.7% tax rise to pay for Abbott’s Parental Leave Scheme but he won’t worry about that yet either – worth a listen if you can get hold of it somewhere, was just on
