Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

    What a STUPID remark!.

    What a hypocrite!

Where did she say that she hated them? She is saying that Abbot should get out of the north shore and amongst ordinary income earners because he seems to be championing the sause of the rich, and well off. That is not hating them … sheeesh!

BG, I read in the AFR that that can. There is apparently some old House of Commons rule that ties in with the Constitution. In addition, 3 MPs have been suspended in the past (not sure for what, though). Oakshott has been linking Thomson’s preselection etc with the HSU report and implying he is not fit to sit in the HoR.

Not in the standing orders. Would be poor precedent and Oakshot knows it. Would easily be subject to High Court challenge. Would also need majority so would need Windsor as well.

I think that there should have been rules in place to make what Thomson was found to have done, illegal. And then after he was charged and tried, he would be rendered ineligible for parliament. But there wasn’t.

You make an interesting point. I was reminded of the issues Nick Sherry had years back, and the fact that Thomson was unwell a few months ago. The coalition and the msm have gone really hard on Thomson for an extended period of time. It has well and truly gone over the top. Frankly, they would have blood on their hands if something happened

    That’s a new twist?

Its part of what Australian Prime Ministers do. Gillard lives in Canberra as per the norm for Prime Ministers.
You I guess want to sell Kirribilli off so your developer mates can make a quick buck putting in a unit block.

by guytaur on May 11, 2012 at 1:39 pm

  13. It’s clear that Gillard paid Thomson simply to stay in power. It is a very serious offence to bribe someone to stay in office. what else are these payments apart from bribes?

ONE of Labor’s most senior powerbrokers has told ALP officials that Craig Thomson’s $200,000-plus legal bill was paid to ensure the Gillard Government held power.

The comments were allegedly made by NSW Labor Party secretary Sam Dastyari during a meeting of the branch’s finance committee last year.

“We need to make this payment to prevent bankruptcy and a by-election in Dobell,” Labor sources said Mr Dastyari told members of the committee.

  17. All four crossbenchers who backed Labor said they preferred Malcolm Turnbull to Mr Abbott.

So? Any sentient being with a pulse prefers Malcolm Turnbull over Abbott.

Given that one of the deciding issues for the indies was the NBN, MT would have to do a lot of fancy footwork to get their votes.

  27. The real Desert Fox did have some brains until he blew them out.

He was a fundamental player in an immoral, illegal, brutal and criminal war of aggression and genocide.

Militarily, he failed to understand that North Africa was a side show to the Eastern Front. The sideshow cost the germans hundreds of thousands of troops killed and captured.

He was in charge of the construction activity involving hundreds of thousands of slave labourers.

It is time that someone took the gloss off.

by Boerwar on May 11, 2012 at 1:43 pm

  28. BTW – If Gillard hates those who live on the North Shore so much why does she live there at Kirrabilli???

    What a STUPID remark!.

It’s just a repeat of one in this article, morphed from “when in Sydney” to implied “permanent residence”:

    http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/political-news/poor-on-the-north-shore–or–six-degrees-of-separation-20120511-1yh3i.html#ixzz1uWrl0R00

Angry about Tony Abbott's refusal to back the “Schoolkids Bonus”, Ms Gillard told the Opposition Leader to “get off Sydney's north shore” where he has (some of) his electorate and “go and talk to some real families and get himself in the real world".

“It is only those who are cosseted on Sydney's north shore who could fail to realise that working families need relief,” she said – disregarding the fact that she lives in Kirribilli when in Sydney.

12 times. 8 more than the nearest MP.

Peter Slipper has used the phrase “class warfare” more than any other MP. 10 times.

  43. It really is a laugh when posters and the MSM try to play the “PM lives here, Ministers live there “angle.

It is not labor that is opposing the payments it is the libs. Labor understands despite where individual party members live, Abbott does not understand because of where he lives

    Simple.

  44. In addition, 3 MPs have been suspended in the past (not sure for what, though).

Yes, for disrespect to the Speaker of the House. Suspending Thomson would be an extremely dangerous precedent. Oakshott should think what might happen if the Nats drummed up some grubby story on him as a pretext to suspend him.

by guytaur on May 11, 2012 at 1:51 pm

  49. If Thomson announces he’s quitting, and a by-election occurs (anywhere from 6-12 weeks from now), and Libs get the 5% swing needed, then the numbers in the HOR are:

ALP 70 (+1 deputy speaker Burke)
Windsor, Bandt, Oakeshott, Wilkie = 4
    LNP 72 (+1 Crook)
    Katter
    Slipper (suspended)

So for a new government to form, the L-NP need 75 (if they only get 74 then Burke will vote for Govt to continue)

So if Katter goes with LNP, they have 74: requiring Windsor, Bandt, Oakeshott or Wilkie to join them.

    Thoughts?
