Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition
This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.
With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).
Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

I recall that Mr Howard made a point of naming and castigating some young people who were not all that keen to shift from Sydney to some long-forgotten hole in Queensland.
These folk were bastardized mercilessly.
When Mr Howard was made Prime Minister he chose not to live in the Lodge, for family reasons.
The reactionaries really like your bread buttered on both sides.
BTW, Mr Abbott clearly felt comfortable with the bastardization aspect of politics. It must be like a drug. He habituates easily and needs more and more of it.
And don’t dare think it will stop when he picks up the reins of power. It is part and parcel of the sociopathic thing.

Reading the following article on the job numbers. I am wonder why do we count the numbers in this way and why not do it based on the number of people that are actually collecting some form of welfare payment even though I accept that many people at first are unable to claim any welfare?

Re The Costello-Kroger battle-
_____________________
One thing Costello get right…according to Kroger …Costello said that Abbott is a” DLP stooge” and given Abbott’s listing of Santamaria as his “mentor” …and his right-wing-Catholic views … Costello is correct on that one,,,though there are DLP stooges in the ALP too….they are still around it seems…

Few reasons why,
The definition of unemployment in the labour force survey is persons seeking and able to start work in the survey period, i.e. next 2 weeks.
A count of just benefits rather than a survey of labour force would as you say exclude those who transition in and out of unemployment without any benefits. The benefit count would also include those persons who were unemployed and not actually able to start work or those who were unemployed, collecting benefits and did not want to work.
Furthermore, those on benefits are able to work a certain number of hours. Using the ABS defnitinion unemployment, any employment beyond 2 hours in the reference week makes you an ‘employed person’ thus quite different from the ABS counts.
From memory unemployment was calculated that way up until the early 1980s but from then on the ABS used the ILO standard labour force definitions.

Asked about NDIS, and if she has the support of the states. She is confident they are on board.
She talked about family payments and the schools bonues and how Abbott and the coalition yesterday voted against the school bonus payment.
Also if the coalition were to get into govt they would rescind mining tax, therefore take away money from families and give it to Palmer and Reinhart.
Asked about Thomson. She said that believes in due process.
Also confident the budget bills will pass through the house.
Was asked about Costello/Kroger. She said that she never much agreed with Costello, but on the one point of Abbott being economically illterate, she wholeheartedly agrees. Did not say anything in the context of Abbott’s leadership.
by victoria on May 11, 2012 at 2:14 pm
I love this quote from Costello’s statement apparently “explaining” why Kroger is saying about his attempts to re-enter parliament is BS:
I hope he isn’t trying to suggest that his generation is past it, partly because of the presence of certain embalmed members of the Liberal front bench, but also because Dr No himself is only 3 months younger than Costello …

Libs untrustworthy on environment, every time.
by lizzie on May 11, 2012 at 2:21 pm
mb,
The class warfare nonsense was always going to manifest itself in our political debate once the notion of restricting access to Welfare payments to specific income groups achieved traction.
$150k seems to be the magic number where the Government is saying individuals and families have to fend for themself without the benefits of Government largesse. This, of course, is antithetical to the Howard era Libs who developed the concept of middle class welfare for the deserving rich.
That Labor is focussing on limiting welfare to those who need it is a good thing. I have no problem with what Labor is doing in this area.

Meanwhile, Greece has no government and Israel has a new one.
It turns out that most greeks would prefer neither to pay back their debts nor to mend their ways to any serious degree. Meanwhile, the privateers got skinned in the bonds haircut but, in the process, managed to transfer most of the liability to the EU institutions and governments. The next chapter in the slow-moging wreck is presumably another election. In the interim the Greek Government has not paid sundry creditors while it pays social security entitlements and public servants: if a corporate, trading while insolvent.
The new Israeli Government potentially provides a broad enough political base for Mr Netanyahu to initiate a hot war against Iran.
