Essential Research: 58-42 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research poll gives Labor its worst result since the company opened for business in 2008: a primary vote of 29%, down two points on last week, and a two-party preferred deficit of 58-42. The former is particularly alarming for Labor, as Essential typically has Labor’s primary vote a few points higher than the phone pollsters. The Coalition and the Greens are steady on 50% and 11%.

With respect to the economy, 66% allowed that it had performed better than other countries’ over the past few years (although this was down from 70% in August last year), with 15% believing it to be worse (up from 10%). In the event of another global financial crisis, 42% would better trust the Liberal Party to deal with it than Labor, on 25%. Forty-six per cent anticipate the economy will get worse over the next 12 months against 23% who think it will get better (the figures when the question was asked a year ago were 37% worse and 27% better).

Sixty-two per cent believe a politician accused of an offence should stand down from their positions, against 27% who believe they should be allowed to continue. Questions on banking suggest the public to be well to the left of the elites on these matters: 55% would support the establishment of a government-owned bank, 74% forcing banks to charge rates in line with the Reserve Bank, 81% capping chief executive’s salaries, 92% limiting bank fees to the costs of the service and 59% a super profits tax on banks (the numbers opposed were respectively 23%, 16%, 12%, 5% and 21%). Fifty-nine per cent would support a levy on large transactions of currencies, bonds and shares, with 16% opposed.

  4. Haven’t watched QandA for ages – I only put it on tonight to see how gorgeous K O’D was looking. It’s been as lightweight as ever so far. Visual push-polling as far as I can tell.

What it does show me is that when people are presented with a complicated truth vs a simple misrepresentation, they’ll opt for the latter every time. They’ll listen to all the explanations of the difficult stuff without really hearing it, then they’ll clap some glib line.

I won’t be watching it again for a while. Kate Miller Heidke can sing, but she doesn’t know the first thing about politics quite obviously.

Not quite as bad as Aussie John Symonds who thrived on being different to the banks with Aussie Home Loans and then became the major banks’ broker – but he did something similar with Wizard.

  7. lizzie,

    What mari said.

Also – though I am sure that you have already considered this – me 82-year-old mum had a severe go of sciatica mid last year, had a shot of cortisone in August, and another one in February, and is doing fine-ish.

It might be worth a thought – though obviously I have no idea of all the other things that are going on for your OH.

Very best wishes to you both.

  36. Did Richo use a govt credit card to use escort services? Otherwise the analogies between him and Thomson are irrelevent.

The allegation was that he was using services provided by Robert Burgess and Nick Carlos. He resigned and denied the allegations. A Minister of the Environment consorting with prostitutes provided by someone with purported serious criminal connections. At least Thomson is not a minister.

Get ready for a surplus of pocket pain

TREASURER Wayne Swan will tonight pledge to deliver a $1.5 billion Budget surplus this year, and $2 billion next year, with government coffers to swell even more after that.

But he will be forced to outline the largest cuts to government spending in decades to allow room for extra spending aimed at giving a "fair go" to struggling families.

  44. is this an inspired leak?

TREASURER Wayne Swan will tonight pledge to deliver a $1.5 billion Budget surplus this year, and $2 billion next year, with government coffers to swell even more after that.

But he will be forced to outline the largest cuts to government spending in decades to allow room for extra spending aimed at giving a "fair go" to struggling families.

It will be a gamble for Mr Swan and and Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who have already faced a backlash from the Labor Left over their plans to force single parents on to the dole and dump plans to increase foreign aid in the savings drive.

But Mr Swan told Cabinet ministers last night the Budget cuts gave them a "good story to tell" because they would fund measures like the education cash payments that will target help to average families.

"Our surpluses have required savings - but they've been responsible, targeted and have been made primarily with a view to protecting working families, the most vulnerable in the community and frontline services," Mr Swan told his cabinet colleagues in a briefing last night.

"As well as returning to surplus, we've also made savings so we can make room for our new priorities."
