Newspoll: 54-46 to Coalition
GhostWhoVotes reports (though James J in comments had the numbers 45 minutes earlier) that Newspoll has the two-party preferred vote at 54-46, compared with 55-45 a fortnight ago and 59-41 the fortnight before. The primary votes are 32% for Labor (up two on last time), 46% for the Coalition (up one) and 12% for the Greens (steady). Julia Gillard’s approval rating is up three to 30% and her disapproval down three to 60%, while Tony Abbott is respectively down three and up four to 31% and 60%. Julia Gillard leads as preferred prime minister 40-37, reversing Abbott’s 40-36 lead last time.
Today’s Essential Research was less encouraging for Labor: it had them losing one of the points on two-party preferred which were clawed back over previous weeks, the result now at 57-43. Primary votes were 50% for the Coalition (up one), 33% for Labor (steady) and 10% for the Greens (steady). Other questions gauged views on the parties’ respective “attributes”, with all negative responses for Labor (chiefly “divided” and “will promise anything to win votes”) rating higher than all positives. The Liberal Party did rather better, rating well for “moderate” and “understands the problems facing Australia”. Bewilderingly, only slightly more respondents (35%) were willing to rate the state of the economy as “good” than “bad” (29%), with 33% opting for neither, although 43% rated the position of their household satisfactory against 28% unsatisfactory.
UPDATE (29/5/12): Morgan have broken the habit of a lifetime by publishing their weekend face-to-face poll results on a Tuesday, never having been known in the past to do it earlier than Thursday. My best guess is that they wished to offer a riposte to Newspoll’s relatively encouraging figures for Labor – “today’s Newspoll showing a swing to the ALP is simply unbelievable”, says Gary Morgan in the accompanying release – with their own results, which show Labor support at an all time low on every measure. The poll has Labor’s primary vote down 4.5% on the previous week to 27.5%, the Coalition up 3.5% to 49% and the Greens up 2.5% to 13%. This translates into 61.5-38.5 on respondent-allocated preferences and 58-42 on preferences as they flowed at the previous election.

Can we get a “buy a new PM and get a new LOTO for free” deal?
by blackburnpseph on May 31, 2012 at 6:20 pm
Something just made me cast my mind back to last year – or was it the year before? – when Abbott went in that Coffs Harbour iron-man event.
Remember the breathless ABC coverage? Almost metre by metre.
by Bushfire Bill on May 31, 2012 at 6:22 pm
BB: I wish more Labor supporters were like you!
Judging from the anecdotes of some so-called Queensland Labor supporters on here, one gets the impression they listen to complaints about Labor (and especially their current leader) and say NOTHING in defence of her or the party.
With friends like those, who needs enemies?

by blackburnpseph on May 31, 2012 at 6:22 pm
It happened so quickly as well, two weeks ago he was so sure he had Thomson about to resign and Slipper sacked.
But of course people are sure of the election result late next year.

I read here how the Libs are performing hopelessly, then hear the ABC say it’s been a bad fortnight for the government. I guess the truth lies somewhere in between.

First he was going to stop a price on carbon.
Then he was going to get rid of the price on carbon.
Now he doesn’t know whether he can undo a price on carbon.
I am glad I am not his horse team.

An leader who runs away and cries
or an leader who will take the media on and will not lie down and die

Don’t think they’ll roll him unless the polls tighten.
by Toorak Toff on May 31, 2012 at 6:28 pm
How about this one:
First action on carbon was the greatest moral challenge of our time
Then we put everything on hold
Then we wait for community consensus before action
Then we would have a community forum
Then we went against the idea of a community forum
Then we will not have a carbon tax
Then we will have a carbon tax
Then we ignore community opinion and introduce a carbon tax on 1000
The we make it 500

It comes down to a real ETS with a real carbon price that is in place, as opposed to the DAP. The farmers, who stand to benefit most, reckon the DAP is on the nose.
Not that it matters because Mr Abbott knows that climate change science is crap. I would be pretty sure that he does not spend his nights lying awake thinking about the atmospheric CO2 concentration graph.

If I were a Liberal MP, the events of this week would really bring the question of judgement to the surface – they might have been unspoken lingering doubts but as the polls have been good – suppressed. But the Thomson vote business yesterday was so unbelievably stupid – a backbencher or a junior frontbencher with no future may have been forgiven but for the LOTO ….//#@@??
by blackburnpseph on May 31, 2012 at 6:33 pm
Well, der!
The govt you’re sticking up for then.
Corrupt already.
And you plead, “I had no knowledge”
Well, now that you do have knowledge, instead of pleading “it’s not my govt” what do you think about it?
by kezza2 on May 31, 2012 at 6:34 pm
Hardly, Mod Lib. A grave matter of concern does not make him immune.
Chris has never held back from asking the side issue question, before, of Labor politicians.
In this case, since Brough has been doing everything he can to avoid discussion of his Ashby involvement, and it gets down to his general credibility to talk on any subject, it was inept and typically dysfunctional of Uhlmann not to bring the matter up.

How much tightening would do the trick?
by Boerwar on May 31, 2012 at 6:35 pm
BB or My Say: semi rhetorical questions. Do you post at Menzies House sites? Assuming you don’t then why would you? Answer: because of the same reasons that the likes of Frank and Gus would go on the 2GB shows at night. Now BB and My Say I have “singled” you out because I’m sure of your loyalty and I assure you I’m not casting aspersions on you.
So have a think about the motives of some who come to this site. Ignore them. They have particular motives in mind.

Boerwar:
I agree, Abbott isnt passionate about this at all, its politics. Where we disagree is that the same applies for Gillard!
That graph shows a rising CO2 but no rise in temperature over the last decade.
Just saying…

It is not acceptable – something fishy there. Who knows, it might end up with the CMC.
by blackburnpseph on May 31, 2012 at 6:38 pm
Brough is under investigation by the CMC and Qld Plod, Uhlmann must have missed that bit.
The LNP Faceless men have introduced the stop Brough preselection rule, Uhlmann missed this as well.
Then we could get to Ashby.
by ruawake on May 31, 2012 at 6:39 pm
Oh, and the bit about the ALP tanking in the polls and hovering around 35 to 45 seats!
by Mod Lib on May 31, 2012 at 6:40 pm
The ABC tend to figure things out a bit after everyone else does. Like the rest of the media, they don’t spot a trend until it comes up and kicks their head in. But they’re pretty good on wrong predictions and violent imagery.
Speaking of which, Gillard doesn’t whinge – or even get her henchmen to complain – when idiots prance around with “ditch the witch” placards (which Abbott was more than proud to be photographed in front of), or when radio or TV figures tee off on her using aggressive language. She, like any public figure with a shred of dignity, rises above it. Or when opposition front benchers taunt her in the halls of Parliament. She just gets on with it.
Abbott, on the other hand, appears to be going out of his way to draw attention to a bit of harmless mockery that nobody would even have known about, tucked away in the office of a Labor MP. Poor petal.
Now, I know how dangerous satire can be. Think of all the damage done by programs like the Gillies Report or the Chaser boys. It would be absolutely terrible if it was discovered that somebody, somewhere, was laughing at Abbott behind his back. A national tragedy. This outrage must be rooted out and destroyed. Put Plibersek in a chaff bag, kick her head in and dump her in the ocean. Ditch that witch.

I think you may be right to a significant extent. Getting something done has been incredibly difficult for either party. I would have been happy to support either party, provided it delivered, because I do believe it is the only first order issue we face.
I would be happy to have that discussion in the scientific domain, but I take it you are rusted on to the denialist line du jour.
by Boerwar on May 31, 2012 at 6:44 pm
What election was that? Admit it your side sucks, you hate your side leader, you hate your sides policy position on everything. In fact you are a dodo – a moderate liberal.

BBS: I know people have commented on Warren Entsch appearing to “run interference” when Abbott took off, but I think that was exactly the point.
Warren has been around for a while; I think he understood instinctively that anyone BUT the LOTO should have been the one to make the dash to the door.
As you say, it was stupid in the extreme for Abbott to have allowed himself to have gotten so caught up on the politics of the moment that he gave no consideration of the wider and longer-term implications of his actions.
by Danny Lewis on May 31, 2012 at 6:47 pm
Mr Abbott just saying, ‘No!’.

I made the observation that, over the last 10 years, said figure shows rising CO2 but no change in temperature.
