Newspoll: 54-46 to Coalition
GhostWhoVotes reports that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead at 54-46, unchanged from the previous poll, with the primary votes at 31% for Labor (down one), 44% for the Coalition (down two) and 14% for the Greens (up two). Julia Gillard’s net approval is 4% less bad than last time, her approval up two to 32% and disapproval down two to 58%, while Tony Abbott is respectively up one to 32% and down one to 59%. On preferred prime minister, Gillard is up two to 42% and Abbott is up one to 38%.
It should be noted that most of the polling period (Friday to Sunday) covered what in every state but WA was a long weekend, when an unusually large number of potential respondents would be away from home. Given that absent and postal votes tend to favour the Coalition, it might be anticipated that this would bias the result slightly in favour of Labor, although measures may have been taken to correct for this. As far as I can tell, Newspoll used to abstain from polling over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, but changed this policy last year.
UPDATE: Essential Research has two-party preferred unchanged on last week at 56-44, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (down one), 32% for Labor (down one) and 10% for the Greens (steady). The monthly personal ratings have Julia Gillard up a point on approval to 32% and down four on disapproval to 56%, with Tony Abbott down four on approval to a new low of 32% and up one on approval up one to 54%. Funnily enough, Newspoll and Essential concur that both leaders’ approval ratings are 32%. Gillard and Abbott are tied at 37% on preferred prime minister, compared with a 38-37 lead for Gillard last time.
Other questions gauge public trust in various institutions, recording a remarkable drop for the federal parliament from 55% to 22% since the question was last asked in September, and other sharp drops recorded for trade unions (from 39% to 22%), environmental groups (45% to 32%), business groups (38% to 22%) and, for some reason, the Reserve Bank (67% to 49%). The poll also finds 60% disapproving of bringing in overseas workers with only 16% approving, 32% believing labour costs and taxes might drive mining companies away against 49% who expect them to carry on regardless.
UPDATE 2: Roy Morgan makes it three polls in one day by reporting its face-to-face results, which it evidently does on Tuesdays now rather than Fridays. This result is Labor’s best since March, their primary vote up half a point to 33% with the Coalition down 2.5% to 42.5% and the Greens up two to 12.5%. On two-party preferred, the Coalition’s lead has narrowed from 55.5-44.5 to 52-48 on previous election preferences and from 58-42 to 55-45 on respondent-allocated.

If I am so dumb, why am I capable of starting sentences with capital letters and including verbs in my sentences so they aren’t simply fragments?
Meanwhile, you still seem to be pretending to be a dolphin.

Thanks for the link on drones.
Individuals far removed, push a button and kill. Just like a videogame the death and destruction is the stuff of fantasy with no sense of responsibility attached…..the reality of such actions….the blood…the smell of burnt and charred flesh….the carnage….human beings wiped out with barely a second’s thought…..abhorrent….

I don’t think anyone on here advocating bringing back Rudd is suggesting he’ll be back in the next few months. The speculation that he’ll be back before July 1st is complete nonsense.
Mid September/October/November will be the ideal time. We have to see a couple of months of polling after July 1st for things to start moving.
I will say that Paul Howes’s change of tone when asked about Rudd was quite revealing. The union movement is preparing for Plan B.

Oh FFS! These numbers are MEANINGLESS while the Coalition is still leading Labor by a country mile on the 2pp!
Maybe you need to think about how it is possible for Labor to be so far behind the Coalition even though Abbott is leader?
You are making the same mistake as the rest of the wishful thinking crowd by thinking that Abbott is unelectable.

For what it’s worth, I was told by a ranger from Uluru, about ten or more years ago, that the local version was that a dingo that more or less belonged to the the local Aboriginals took the baby and the locals, who were and are absolutely shit scared of the police/rangers (nice to see the colonial kiap mentality alive and well in the 21st century) were responsible for the removal and disposal of the jacket and, it is assumed, the remains in an effort to cover the trail so that the actions of the dingo weren’t linked to them. I have absolutely no idea whether this is the case or not.
I think it was about 1980 or 1981 that I was in in Alice Springs and was blissfully unaware of what was happening around the corner as I walked straight into the media scrum which, for Alice Springs, was huge. That scrum was, I believe, the very first trial but I’m not 100% sure about that.
For my part, I am happy to put my hand up and admit that I was part of the lynch mob, although I changed my opinions before LC was released from prison, well and truly independent of what the ranger told me. G’day, Des, if you are still out there.
Des, by the way, had a nice little bit of patter that he used to feed the ever believing bus tourists. I had the need to publicly correct him about his statement that “Mabo was brought in by the Labor government”. To his credit, he took it on board but no doubt continued to tell the punters what they wanted to hear on all future tours!

by ShowsOn on Jun 12, 2012 at 8:00 pm
Style IS substance. That has always be a false dichotomy.
You don’t get anywhere in politics by just having good policies, you have to sell them and explain why they are right, and explain why any alternatives are wrong and would be a huge risk.
Gillard may be good at policy, but she gets no credit for it. For evidence of this, look at all the polls over the last year.

I was part of the process that ‘cleaned up’ the utter crap that used to be spouted by self-appointed experts, tour guides and bus drivers about Uluru and the traditional owners. This was possible because the traditional owners regained ownership of Uluru.
The outcome was a far more authentic cultural experience for tourists – something that repeated survey outcomes indicated that they had come for.
Not the rubbish talk of many quite racist ranters.
In relation to Azaria’s death, I lost count of the rumours I heard at Uluru. It was clear that lots of people simply made up their own stories and uttered them as if true.
As we can see from some of today’s entries on Bludger, some of the ratbags are still at it.

Unfortunately, I am a sceptic when it comes to matters like these. Accepting, for the purpose of discussion, the Chamberlains didn’t do it, I find it unbelievable that a dingo/feral dog could do all the things I referred to.
Certainly the Chamberlains are entitled to have a closure of this terrible event, but I am left with the nagging doubt that they at least know what really happened.
Despite my own feelings, I am constrained to accept the Coroner’s findings.

For the ‘had in the sand’ brigade who don’t watch 7.30, the program tonight featured a segment on suicide, the leading cause of death in young adults under 34. Yes, more die from this cause than the road toll.
I recommend you catch up with it on iview if you get a chance. Well worth watching as, if don’t already know people affected, you probably will one of these days. A key issue is how to respond to families and individuals who have suffered this loss.
