Newspoll: 54-46 to Coalition
GhostWhoVotes reports that Newspoll has the Coalition’s two-party lead at 54-46, unchanged from the previous poll, with the primary votes at 31% for Labor (down one), 44% for the Coalition (down two) and 14% for the Greens (up two). Julia Gillard’s net approval is 4% less bad than last time, her approval up two to 32% and disapproval down two to 58%, while Tony Abbott is respectively up one to 32% and down one to 59%. On preferred prime minister, Gillard is up two to 42% and Abbott is up one to 38%.
It should be noted that most of the polling period (Friday to Sunday) covered what in every state but WA was a long weekend, when an unusually large number of potential respondents would be away from home. Given that absent and postal votes tend to favour the Coalition, it might be anticipated that this would bias the result slightly in favour of Labor, although measures may have been taken to correct for this. As far as I can tell, Newspoll used to abstain from polling over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, but changed this policy last year.
UPDATE: Essential Research has two-party preferred unchanged on last week at 56-44, from primary votes of 49% for the Coalition (down one), 32% for Labor (down one) and 10% for the Greens (steady). The monthly personal ratings have Julia Gillard up a point on approval to 32% and down four on disapproval to 56%, with Tony Abbott down four on approval to a new low of 32% and up one on approval up one to 54%. Funnily enough, Newspoll and Essential concur that both leaders’ approval ratings are 32%. Gillard and Abbott are tied at 37% on preferred prime minister, compared with a 38-37 lead for Gillard last time.
Other questions gauge public trust in various institutions, recording a remarkable drop for the federal parliament from 55% to 22% since the question was last asked in September, and other sharp drops recorded for trade unions (from 39% to 22%), environmental groups (45% to 32%), business groups (38% to 22%) and, for some reason, the Reserve Bank (67% to 49%). The poll also finds 60% disapproving of bringing in overseas workers with only 16% approving, 32% believing labour costs and taxes might drive mining companies away against 49% who expect them to carry on regardless.
UPDATE 2: Roy Morgan makes it three polls in one day by reporting its face-to-face results, which it evidently does on Tuesdays now rather than Fridays. This result is Labor’s best since March, their primary vote up half a point to 33% with the Coalition down 2.5% to 42.5% and the Greens up two to 12.5%. On two-party preferred, the Coalition’s lead has narrowed from 55.5-44.5 to 52-48 on previous election preferences and from 58-42 to 55-45 on respondent-allocated.

Laura Tingle:
As the heir apparent to the prime ministership, Tony Abbott has to come under pressure at some point to say how he would do the job. He knows the longer he keeps on the attack and the government on the back foot, the longer he can put off that day.

I should have added that you would find party meetings generally much more tolerant than PB.
by bemused on Jun 15, 2012 at 12:35 am
Bemused: can you provide any evidence of a single positive reference you have made of a Labor policy in the last three months. You seem to spend all your blogging hours condemning current Labor policy and spruiking a leadership challenge. You seem confused about who the enemy is. That disappoints me. I get your disappointment with th the leadership, but not your obsession with it.
by Rossmore on Jun 15, 2012 at 12:35 am
Rossmore @ 3709
Do your own research.
Show me where I have attacked Labor policy.
I read the polls and interpret what they are saying and they indicate to me that the present leader, rightly or wrongly, is massively unpopular and is dragging down the Labor vote. Thee is an abundance of evidence that supports this interpretation of the polls.
If the present leader is to be replaced, then there is only one viable choice. Spur212 is right in this respect.
That is not an attack on Julia Gillard and nor is it an attack on any Labor policy. If you think otherwise then you have seriously lost the plot.
by bemused on Jun 15, 2012 at 12:42 am
Bemused no I ain’t gonna do your research. If you can’t provide any evidence of your support for present Labor policy, that speaks volumes.

Big Ted’s troubles in Vic..and a hiccup
________
The water utility..Melbourne Water..made a major billing error and overcharged everyone by $172…a total of $300 million overcharged which Big Ted Bailleau described on 3AW to Mitchell as:” a hiccup”. Miktchyell leaped on that statement
a very big hiccup !!
The talkbacks have run hot today with angry callers as M>Water seems uncertain as to a refund
while Big Ted seems to regard it as of not much importance,,
“a hiccup” he said
Some callers are saying that will deduct the amound when paying their bill..and M Water says thats not on and willsee your water cut off.. troubled waters indeed!
Big Ted bounces from crisis to crisis
I suspect his backbencher’s phones have run hot today with angry calls
all it needs now is a bad poll

Bemused: My simple claim was you haven’t made a single positive claim, expression, assertion or statement of support for present Labor Party policy in the months I’ve been on this blog. Every one of your posts seems tainted, obsessively so, with the old Rudd/Gillard leadership issue. The world has moved on. Get over it, and start grappling with the challenges in front of your nose.

I remember when we first came to Greece , the old airport with the armed soldiers and a tank parked outside, not very welcoming. Also spoke to a restaurant owner who I often go to, he is really worried, but WOULD not say why??

Rubbish.
Women’s suffrage in New Zealand was an important political issue in the late 19th century. Of countries presently independent, New Zealand was the first to give women the vote in modern times.[1]
The Electoral Bill granting women the franchise was given Royal Assent by Governor Lord Glasgow on 19 September 1893, and women voted for the first time in the election held on 28 November 1893 (elections for the Māori electorates were held on 20 December). In 1893, Elizabeth Yates also became Mayor of Onehunga, the first time such a post had been held by a female anywhere in the British Empire.[2]

Surprise, surprise, surprise. Looks like Costello has discovered that the Bligh government was responsible for borrowing bucket loads of money and providing the LNP with an excuse to renege on their promises. Of course there was no mention of the biggest recorded cyclone destroying the entire road infrastructure of north Qld, which occurred only three years after the previous one. The Brisbane floods and the drought. Amazingly enough this all costs money. No mention of the worst downturn since the depression.
I winner what the books of Brisbane city council look like. Of course Newman isn’t prepared to do anything about global warming so won’t be prepared for the next inevitable disaster either.

Oh, and on the female vote thingy; while it is true that New Zealand was the first place in the world to give women the vote (in 1893), South Australia followed close on its heels (1894). But what was significant about the SA vote was the way it was debated in parliament.
Obviously the “pro-women” vote was strong, but there was still significant resistance across the other side of the chamber. For some men, though, the resistance was not strong enough and they were angered that there were sufficient men on their own side of the chamber to ensure the vote got up.
Someone (apologies for not remembering who!) hit upon this brilliant idea of amending the Bill so that it also gave women the right to STAND for parliament, not merely the right to vote. He thought this idea would horrify his colleagues so much that they would knock the whole Bill on the head.
Thankfully, the SA parliament – brave and true – called his bluff and so, in 1894, South Australia became the first place in the world to give women the right to stand for parliament.
Yay, SA!
