Nielsen: 56-44 to Coalition

• The South Australian Liberals have preselected moderate candidate Anne Ruston to fill Mary Jo Fisher’s casual Senate vacancy. Ben Hyde of The Advertiser reports Ruston won with “more than 50% of the vote”, from a field that also included Kate Raggatt, state party director Bev Barker, farmer Gary Burgess and Campbelltown councillor Marijka Ryan. A moderate source quoted by Daniel Wills of The Australian before the event said Ruston could be in trouble if she failed to achieve 50% in the first round, as Right support would then have consolidated behind whoever performed better out of Barker and Raggatt.

  1. Understand ashby deleted his facebook account, but seems abc got some.

"In 2003 I met James Ashby through a mutual friend. He was working for a radio station and in the process of moving to Townsville," the email said.

"We began a sexual relationship which lasted for a few weeks before James broke it off as he had started a relationship with another person, which lasted two or three years.

"I was 15 at the time, however what we did, under Queensland law, cannot be consented to under the age of 18.

"The guy James broke it off for was also 15 at the time they began their relationship.

"James left me feeling used and disgusted with myself."

7.30 has also seen Facebook messages that Mr Ashby sent to the young man confirming their relationship.

"I really never gave an explanation behind me f***ing off and not saying why," Mr Ashby wrote.

"Strangely enough the reason was so pathetic but I thought I'd share it with you.

"Your mum freaked me out when she walked in on you and me in bed. That did my head in for some strange reason."

Mr Ashby continued the correspondence as he prepared to take on his new job.

  4. Can anyone explain the QLD police statement which said:

"The Queensland Police Service is in the process of determining whether any person authorised to do so wishes to make a complaint and if that is the case whether there is the evidence to support any prosecution. We will advise in due course the outcome of that investigation."

    Shorter version
We are awaiting advice from Can Do Newman.

  10. The Queensland Police Service is in the process of determining whether any person authorised to do so wishes to make a complaint

So they’re talking to the guy making the allegations to see if he wants to go ahead with pressing charges.

and if that is the case whether there is the evidence to support any prosecution.

And – if he decides to go ahead – whether he’s got anything beyond his own word to back up his statements.

  12. Graeme@1247,

C@tmomma – I hear the same but amongst girls! A bit of experimentation was always the norm; but quietly rather than turbo charged

I was talking about the girls! My son gets quite upset about it. :)

Actually, there’s still plenty of fish left in the sea at the end of the day.

  13. zoomster@1259,
In this instance wouldn’t the mother be a witness to what occurred between Ashby & the other boy?

    by C@tmomma on Jul 30, 2012 at 10:19 pm

  14. Funny how there are options. they never ask a dead body if it wants to press murder charges against the person that did the stabbing.

Why, if a crime has been committed, does there need to be someone other than the cops to want to press charges?

by Gaffhook on Jul 30, 2012 at 10:20 pm

  15. C@tmomma

The mother may have asked her son questions at the time and received two answers:

    (1) Mum, I really like him and I wanted to go bed with him
    (2) Mum, I am really angry at him, but I don’t want to go public.

Alternatively, she may have not wanted to ‘know’ anything at all.

by Boerwar on Jul 30, 2012 at 10:22 pm

  16. Gaff hook. A dead body offers a certain amout of evidence.

Plus, even plods can separate murder (the ultimate victim hood) from crimes where the notion of criminal victim hood may depend the complainant feeling hat way,

    (1) because they may have enjoyed consensual sex and still have fond memories of it.
    (2) because they did not enjoy it at the time, or felt abused in retrospect, but they may not want to go public.

As I understand it, the Commonwealth Parliament. By way of clarification, I consider my sexual preference of choice to be heterosexual and my lifestyle to be that of a legally married heterosexual.

  35. The Qld Police don’t need a complainant in order to commence an investigation. They almost certainly do need a person offended against to be a willing witness against their suspect. We don;t know the state of mind of the alledged victim yet, although his contacting Slipper could be an indication of preparedness to assist police in their enquiries. In addition, reading between the lines it appears that the AFP may well have some evidence in their posession in the form of electronic messages that could be bad news for Mr Ashby. Luckily for Mr Ashby there is a well developed dislike by the AFP in sharing evidence with State police forces, most especially Qld Police.

  46. The question Brough should be hammered with is why did he incite Doane and Ashby to send him Slipper’s diary? And very specific diary entries. Lewis was also pursuing this line. Only a matter of time before the AFP start pursuing possible case of criminal incitement. Any lawyers know what the charge could be under federal law?

  49. We don;t know the state of mind of the alledged victim yet, although his contacting Slipper could be an indication of preparedness to assist police in their enquiries.

I would suspect that, to the mind of the alleged victim, contacting Slipper is in a completely different ballpark to aiding in the prosecution of Ashby – possibly a slightly naive viewpoint, but I think it is understandable that there could be sympathy for Slipper and lingering resentment of Ashby sufficient to prompt a comment to Slipper, but without any desire to see it be escalated beyond that…

Which I would suspect is also the way the Queensland police would be treating it. Without a witness statement from the person involved and an expressed willingness to take it further (or perhaps the mother of the person involved at a stretch), the police wouldn’t be taking any initiative on this.

Which probably leaves this twist as sideshow distraction, and an extra layer of sleaze on the Slipper/Ashby drama.

by Jackol on Jul 30, 2012 at 11:25 pm

  50. victoria,
Steve Bracks would be an asset to the federal Labor government, to be sure. And the best male eye candy in Canberra for a long time. :)
