Essential Research: 56-44 to Coalition

This week’s Essential Research shows no real change on voting intention, with the Coalition still leading 56-44 from primary votes of 32% for Labor (down one), 49% for the Coalition (steady) and 10% for the Greens (steady). Also featured are Essential’s monthly personal ratings, which likewise show little shift. Julia Gillard is down a point on both approval and disapproval, to 31% and 57%. Tony Abbott is respectively up one to 36% and down two to 51%, and his lead as preferred prime minister is up from 38-37 to 38-36 (I guess not too many people heard this then). A question on same-sex marriage finds 54% supportive and 33% opposed, respectively steady and down two on a year ago.

Preselection snippets:

Phillip Coorey of the Sydney Morning Herald reports Gary “Angry” Anderson will seek Nationals preselection in Gilmore, the southern New South Wales seat which will be vacated at the election by the retirement of Liberal member Joanna Gash.

• In the neighbouring seat of Hume, where Liberal member Alby Schultz is retiring, Coorey further reports that state upper house MP Niall Blair is a further possibility as Nationals candidate, together with presumed front-runners Senator Fiona Nash and state government minister Katrina Hodgkinson. Leslie White of the Weekly Times recently reported both Nationals and Liberal internal polling had the Liberals ahead in the seat, but the Nationals remained confident they could win with Nash or Hodgkinson running.

The Australian reports Matt Adamson, former Canberra, Penrith and national rugby league player, has been sounded out by the Liberals to run against Rob Oakeshott in Lyne. The Nationals have already endorsed David Gillespie, a local doctor who was best man at Tony Abbott’s wedding.

• The Victorian ALP has taken care of a whole bunch of preselection business, re-endorsing all sitting members and confirming Slater & Gordon lawyer Andrew Giles to succeed Harry Jenkins in Scullin, and United Voice official Lisa Chesters to succeed Steve Gibbons in Bendigo. The preselection for Melbourne will be held on August 26, with 2010 candidate Cath Bowtell considered the front-runner but Harvey Stern, president of Labor for Refugees Victoria, is also in the field.

• John Hogg, Queensland Labor Senator since 1996 and the chamber’s current President, has announced he will not re-contest the next election. Michael McKenna of The Australian reports Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Union state secretary Chris Ketter is “among the frontrunners” to replace him as a Labor Senate candidate – remembering that Labor won three Senate seats in Queensland in 2007, and the party fears it may only win one next year.

  2. Deaths in Indo-China
    ________________
I understand that between 1945-1975 the Franch-US wars saw the deaths of over 4 million people
If the French had gone in 1945 Indo-China might have had a peaceful post-colonial transition…but the imperial powers never behave sensibily…as happened in Algeria in the late 1950ies…when it took De Gaulle to extract France from an unwinable war

  3. This little black duck,

    scorps,

Anna Meares comes from Rocky. I insist on your sending me a signed photo, by her of her.

I was always of the opinion that she came from Rocky and the media often mention that but according to Wikki, that is not so at all.

I know for a fact that she and her sister did a lot of competition riding at the kenrick Tucker Veladrome at North Rocky but it looks like the earlier years were spent in Mackay.

Just goes to show, you can’t believe everything you read in the media! ;-)

Anna Meares started competitive cycling at the age of 11 in 1994, following her older sister Kerrie Meares into the sport. The family were inspired to take up competitive cycling by Kathy Watt winning a cycling gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. With the family living in the small Queensland coal-mining town of Middlemount, it was more than two hours drive to the nearest cycling track at Mackay for the girls to train.

  7. If a “criminal nation” is one who indiscriminantly considers it has rights to bomb and land mine other countries (Cambodia) and invade them at will (Iraq/Grenada/Panama/etc etc), well yes USA is a criminal nation as was Soviet Russia for a time and the UK in the 19th century and Belgium and France. But does that term assist anything?

  9. What most deployed soldiers experience.

This experience has provided me with a sound appreciation of both the environments and personal circumstances of refugees and asylum seekers. If you have seen starving children amidst filth, squalor and destruction, it will not leave you unchanged or unmoved.

Then howard springs children thrown overboard.

Personnally think howard, and his thugs which include abbott, ruddock, reith , etc are criminals.

  13. If the French had gone in 1945 Indo-China might have had a peaceful post-colonial transition

If the French had left in 1945 it might have been possible to construct a non-communist government strong enough to keep Ho Chi-Minh out of power, though that would have been hard given his standing. There might still have been a civil war. The communists might still have taken over the whole of Vietnam, and Lao as well. That would have been bad in many ways, but not I think as bad as what actually happened. It’s easy to be wise after the event, but even at the time it was clear that the French attempt to regain control of Indo-China was absolute folly, and played into the hands of the communists.

  14. 3901

De Gaulle was put in charge because the French Army in Algeria basically threatened to use force to prevent withdrawal from Algeria. They even Landed paratroopers on Corsica. However de Gaulle ended up not withdrawing in Algeria. He also brought in the semi-presidential system of the 5th Republic replacing the parliamentary 4th Republic. Something he believed in but was/is wrong.

  16. Re W.A
    ____
I must say there is something wierd about some folks in W/A
When I was last there there was a TV add about how their mining windfall was being taken away by evil easterners
I am old enough to remember when WA and Qland were deemed “mendicant” states(try “beggers’),,and when good money was syphoned off for their needs from the Eastern states

But all that fades when one sees the feral behaviour of the West Coast Eagles football supporters

Last Friday’s behaviour when a Geelong player Hawkins was concussed after a mark was despicable and just plain moronic

Their very presence pollutes the competition

  19. I realise modern politicians will rarely surprise with innovation but I wish we had a law making it necessary for a full OPEN Royal Commission whenever Australian armed forces are stationed overseas. NO politician, public servant or anyone else would be exempt for full accountability to the people as to what happened.

That may make ‘them’ think seriously before they committed troops to overseas adventures.

I object to the appropriation of the word “Holocaust” to events other than the Nazi genocide of the Jews.

That said, are you referring to the Nazi-Ustase massacres of Serbs during World War II, or the Serbian massacres of Bosniaks during the post-Yugoslav wars? There have been a lot of massacres in that part of the world.

  28. I had a guided tour of the remoter parts of the Hunter Valley a couple of years ago from a good friend who grew up there. Very impressed. I finally had an appreciation of the bushranger stories I had often heard about but seemed so improbable from the perspective of the dry and desert areas of WA which were so familiar to me.

Blimey eh! Always thought that Queensland was an eastern State. Must have looked at the map the wrong way round! ;-)

I think you are sadly wRONg about Qld economic history also. The discovery of gold at Gympie saw Qld avoid bankruptcy and the development of the Bowen Basin coal fields hasn’t done a lot of harm either.

I think for the past century, Qld has led in beef, wool, cottton and wheat production also. The Qld Government has had a fully covered public superannuation scheme for decades and of course had a free hospital scheme since about 1920.

Even just a little research would show your claim to be baloney. Us Qld’ers will be happy to receive an apology though! ;-)

  40. As that famous WWII pedant should know it was the Brits who occupied Vietnam in 1945.
And were forced to arm their Japanese prisoners of war so they could defend themselves against reprisals from the Vietnamese who had continued to fight against their invaders during the war.
Dr Stephen Fitzgerald, author of the The History of South East Asia, who went on to be Whitlam’s ambassador to China, showed that the Vietnamese were nationalists not communists. It follows, as Robert MacNamarra admitted, that the Vietnam war was a mistake. Psephos may wish to comment.

To me the Labor Right means the criminal clique in NSW who’s aim seems to have been to maximise the prison population, stuff up transport, give privilidges to developers. Be generally useless and dirty.
