Politics, elections and piffle plinking

And Catch the Fire They Will

Peter Costello has long been cosy with an intolerant little Christian sect called Catch the Fire Ministries and it’s so called leader Pastor Danny Nalliah.

They had prophetic delusions of Howard’s victory in the lead up to the 2007 election, they met with Costello to “prepare him” for the Prime Ministership and they even prayed for divine intervention to get Costello into the lodge earlier this year. All to no avail, but god works in mysterious ways apparently.

In return for such divine assistance, Costello speaks at their functions and defends them in the court of public opinion – carrying on a long Howard/Costello tradition of cosying up to fringe dwelling religious nutjobs.

I’m sure the latest spiel from this group in their press release today will go down well with the good burghers of Higgins and Victorians generally:

CTFM leader, Pastor Danny Nalliah said he would spearhead an effort to provide every assistance to devastated communities, although he was not surprised by the bush fires due to a dream he had last October relating to consequences of the abortion laws passed in Victoria.

He said these bushfires have come as a result of the incendiary abortion laws which decimate life in the womb.

What say you Costello – still support these creeps?

UPDATE:

Shows On in comments gets a response from Costello’s office.

“To link the death and the suffering of bushfire victims to other political events is appalling, heartless and wrong. Those who have suffered deserve every support and sympathy. It is beyond the bounds of decency to try to make moral or political points out of such a tragedy.” Peter Costello

Hear hear Mr Costello.

Let’s just hope he continues to think those remarks are beyond the bounds of decency the next time he’s panning for the fringe end of the evangelical vote.

UPDATE 2:

Fielding Responds to Nalliah as well as to Nalliah being second behind Fielding on the Victorian Family First Senate ticket in the 2004 election, leading to the suggestion that Nalliah could be a possible replacement should the Senator fall under a bus.

    SBR,

Thanks but I’m not after your sympathy. Drawing analogy from one form of zealotry to another is perfectly reasonable and I stand by that comment.

    Possum,

If you want to add to the credibility of your blog, being “objective” really isn’t as onerous as you made it out to be. It basically requires more thoroughly researched commentary (I’m in no way referring to your commentary on opinion polls – mathematics and statistics are out of my league) and consistency.

Instead of embarking on a beatup of a Liberal MP, try discarding the indignation and approach the issue with a more open-minded disposition. Yes politicization of the bushfires is disgraceful – but if you’re going to damn Costello for loosely associating with that group, damn others or be equally ready to damn others for their improprieties. Otherwise, you come across as partisan and set yourself up to be deservedly attacked for it.

If you want your blog to be a centre-left political commentary then by all means feel free to pursue it, but you should be more clear about the site’s leanings and expect partisan debate in return.

Patrick – I’ve never, ever pretended to be a he said/she said objectivist and I’ve always been upfront and brutally honest about my political disposition.

Snapper, there was an unfortunate slip of the keys there.

Is that a “there will soon be another…” or “will there soon be another…?” ?

    Gee whiz!

Old mate Patrick ‘The Fogster’ Fogerty seems to be really riled up this evening!

    By way of revelling in the vitriol, let’s review some of Pat’s words-smithing tonight;

“What an appallingly dishonest representation”. Bring it on Pat!

“Any person with year 1 literacy would read the first paragraph from the first link provided” Yeah, that’ll learn ‘em Fogster!

“…a bunch drones that ostensibly pontificate over poll data but in reality just regurgitate far-left drivel.” Take that you lefty, pinko, draft dodging do gooders!

“What a miserly, dishonest and pathetic bunch of people you are…” Woohoo stick it to them Foggy!

Right on Pat! I haven’t seen vitriol like this for so long that I’ve forgotten – I only wish I could bottle it! It’s just so damn…Christian of you!

Cheers Fogster, I look forward to you next instalment of home-grown detestation and revulsion, lovingly recreated into pros so sweet as to charm the bible out of the hands of Pastor Danny Nalliah!

Possum – if you are sent to Nazi Barbie’s Naughty Corner … I hate to think what she’d do to me – in the compass test – I end up 2 divisions across (from edge) and 3.5 divisions up (from bottom) in the green sector, and in the map test – 2 divisions up from the left vertex with 100% on personal and 20% on economic.
