Rather than making multiple little posts about the spill – I’ll just keep this thread running today and update it whenever something interesting pops up with the spill. It might run long, it might not – we’ll see how it goes.
From Danielle Cronin (Canberra Times):
“Liberal number cruncher reckons Turnbull is two votes ahead of Abbott, with four members undecided #spill.”
Which is interesting since it suggests that Hockey hasnt fully decided to run, or if he has, hasnt told everyone.
Brings back memories of Latham vs. Beazley. Who is going to be the Liberal’s Robert McLelland? (the vote that got Latham over the line).

Shameless quote of the day: Tuckey on Turnbull “This is a Liberal leader bucketing Liberals”
—-
via Samantha Maiden (The Oz), Hockey just met with Minchin, Abetz and Robb – now appears to be in Turnbull’s office
—-
So Hockey seems to be negotiating with the climate skeptics, probably figuring out a way to extract himself from his previous comments (so as not to look like a bit of a dick) should he get the leadership – possibly involving some sort of ETS trade-off deal with the skeptics to let him keep face. ETS deferral but a relatively pro-climate change stance?
Samantha Maiden reports that Abbott is in Bishop’s office (insert joke)

Via Sandra O’Malley – the Canberra Press Gallery paparazzi!

Abbott leaves Bishops office – via James Massola (Canberra Times) and:
Abbott just told 30 odd journos Joe hockey will make up his own mind #spill

More political power brokers enter the fray – Via Sam Maiden:
brian loughnane lib director leaves hockeys office into turnbull#spill

If you just watched Playing Politics on Sky, you have my condolences. The braincells don’t grow back I’m afraid.

Via Latika Bourke
Hockey’s left Turnbull’s office and is back in his own. #spill

Turnbull to start a new Party of sacked? Larvatus Prodeo covers the rumors
—-
Via Latika again:
Howard’s former Chief Of Staff, Graeme Morris, just headed into Turnbull’s office.
Which is really interesting.
—-
Snarky Platypus (Marsupial News Network) reports that:
Malcolm Turnbull is also in Malcolm Turnbull’s office.
—-
Karen Middleton (SBS) with the most important story today for you folks worried about burnt retinas over Tony Abbott’s budgie smuggler pics floating around in the papers.
Newsflash for the deeply concerned. Confirming Tony Abbott is, indeed, fully clothed today. It’s a little chilly in Canberra. Ill wind, etc.
Outbreak of gallery blindness averted.

Rumor Lucy Turnbull is in the building

Turnbull has left the building!!!

Via Latika Bourke again:
Malcolm Turnbull ‘I have nothing more to say, please leave Lucy and I alone.’ Personal observation: he was not in a good mood.
—-
Via James Massola again:
Turnbull got straight into his car. Turnbull staffer has no comment other than he is going to lunch. No news on a presser
—-
Via Karen Middleton again:
Reports from colleagues still lurking downstairs.. that Turnbull has left his office not looking all that cheery.
—-
Via Latika again:
high placed Liberal confirms Joe Hockey will run for the leadership following his meeting with Malcolm Turnbull. #spill

It seems to be lunch on Spillers Eve – recharging the batteries, what with all this scurrying between offices.
—-
Lunch over.
Annabel Crabb at her new ABC gig, Hockey told Turnbull he will challenge:
Turnbull has called presser for 3.25pm AEDT
—-
You can watch the presser streamed live from here via ABC for those of you reading. It’s 3:22pm now, starts at 3:25
—-
Presser finished – was a pretty funny moment with Malcolm jokingly telling the journos how to ask questions.
Shorter Turnbull:
He and Joe met over the weekend and the press didnt find out.
He reckons he has an agreement with Hockey to vote against a spill.
If, however, a spill motion is succesful we…well, we don’t know what will happen – any questions on that were answered with a “Go ask Joe” type response.
Turnbull’s key quote – giving conservatives indigestion everywhere - was that “The Liberal Party has to be a progressive movement“, a “Party of today and tomorrow” and that the ETS might not be perfect – but there will always be disagreement over what is and is not perfect and that action is needed now, hence his support for the negotiated Bill.
—-
Fielding tried to gate crash the remnants of the Turnbull presser, wanting a Royal Commission into the science of climate change chaired by Ross Garnaut and Ian Plimer. Most of the press left, some chuckling. (via.. well, the whole press gallery on twitter).
—-
The Oz has a story on how Bishop will go if Turnbull goes – likely to be replaced by Dutton
—-
The machinations continue – via Latika Bourke again:
Okay, so Abbott, Hunt, Pyne, Bishop and Loughnanne all just vacated Joe Hockey’s office. Dutton and Minchin still in, possible w. Fielding.
—-
Greens staffer Tim Hollo adds to the fun and games:
Rumour that 3 Lib Senators will oppose motion to defer #CPRS vote. Could scupper Hockey #spill strategy! #sillierbytheminute
Imagine that would be Troeth, Humphries – don’t know the third one.
—-
Again from Latika Bourke:
Fielding’s just been in with Hockey, Dutton and Minchin. He’s refused their plea to vote in favour of referring delaying ETS to ctte.
—-
Oakes on Nine News talks of speculation ab0ut Minchin letting the ETS pass as long as Turnbull is removed.
So where does this leave the whole “it’s not a leadership issue, it’s a policy issue” spiel?
This is descending into farce, again.
—-
Via Mark Colvin:
Deal coalescing in Canberra: if Joe gets leadership there’ll be a conscience vote in the Senate on the ETS. PM shortly
Which you’ll be able to listen to on ABC radio streamed here.
—-
Over the last hour or so, a rather large expectation that the ETS will pass has developed
—-
Via Naomi Woodley (ABC)
ABC understands a Hockey leadership deal will mean Libs will get a free vote on the ETS, giving it enough support to get through the Senate.
—-
The noisy Liberal and National party grassroots are going to explode!
—-
Stephen Spencer (Ten) reports that:
Minchin says speculation he supports passage of “Labor’s CPRS Bill through the Senate upon a change of leadership are inaccurate”
and
MInchin “the Bill should be referred to a Senate Inquiry, to report back after the Copenhagen conference”. Quickest response statement ever?
Latika Bourke says:
Tony Abbott will hold a presser in 15 minutes. Wouldn’t clarify any details just then.
Which will be at about 7:15 AEDT
—-
Let me know if you want me to do this tomorrow in comments will you? Plenty of you seem to be reading and I’ll be keeping up with this stuff anyway.
—-
source: conscience vote deal confirmed.
—-
Abbott’s presser streaming here:
—-
Shorter Abbott:
Says he will stand tomorrow regardless, says you can’t be a credible party and have a free vote.
Abbott will stand as the candidate opposing the ETS, also effectively says he will keep Julie Bishop as deputy. Pretty much an anti-Malcolm and Joe is untenable (because of his support for the ETS) statement.
We don’t know if this will be a 2 or 3 horse race – if the next few hours is like the last, it will probably all change again pretty soon.
—-
Via Karen Middleton
Ian Macfarlane says he’s got no idea what’s going on & it’s bordering on being out of control. Priceless.
—-
Bernard Keane not taking Senator Fiskal seriously enough when he was demanding a Royal Commission. Shame BK, Shame!

Now he tells me.
The only deal with the right that will help Hockey save face is to get the denialists to pass the ETS. Anything short of that will see him cast has the ambitious backstabber with no conviction, he will just be Labor’s whipping boy until the day of the next poll.
I hate office politics.
Malcolms office must be awfully crowded.
Auzzie will be really pi**ed – there will be no one meeting over a coffee today
Well that presser was a whole lot of nothing, cept that the oneupsmanship within the Libs continue…
He looked pretty cheery actually. I suspect deep down he may be enjoying himself.
I suspect it’s part of the oneupsmanship. He wants to look confident, he was almost being overhappy and jovial with the journalists.
I imagine that not having to lead the Liberals would make him very happy
I thought Turnbull’s performance was excellent. He repeatedly tied the ETS to John Howard, noting that Rudd’s ETS was very similar the rodent’s especially after Lib amendments. Which it is.
Effectively, he said if you knife me, you’re knifing Howard’s ghost.
Everything he said about there being broad public support for timely climate change action, and the Libs being screwed if they have no CC policy, will ring true with the punters.
I think Turnbull can be a pompous ass, and I would take a lot to get me to vote for his party (new or old), but I was impressed.

Poss – doing this tomorrow would be great – Cheers
Please continue this tomorrow Poss, it’s very much appreciated.
yes tomorrow please, twitter is blocked at work you have a crap filter
…and you have a crap filter
Good one Poss. Continue please.
If you can find the time doing the same thing tomorrow would be wonderful. Crikey isn’t blocked at work (yet).
That’s what it looks like from the traffic logs – everyone coming in from workplaces.
I’ll run it again tomorrow – doing my bit to help national productivity
Spying on us Poss?
I like the continuing posts, but for those of us reading in one session a time stamp would help!
Good point DP
If it was OK for Lib Senators to vote against the ETS in contradiction of the stated party position, why would it now not be OK for Lib Senators to vote FOR the ETS in contravention of Abbott’s position should he win?
Member for Ryan on Lateline – what a douchebag.
He’s a total tool.
Time stamp can be done
Um… er… just because, ok?
Love your work, better than footy.
“Member for Ryan on Lateline – what a douchebag.
He’s a total tool.”
Don’t worry, as Jones pointed out to him, with a margin of about 1% in his electorate he won’t be around much longer.
thanks for the resource possum, i couldn’t keep up with the tweetercaust all day.
Surely tomorrow morning will finally see the end of it all one way or the other and a running commentary all day won’t be required? I guess you could have said that a few times in the last week though…
David Ritchie – just watched it online.
All I an say is wow. Like, wow. Wipeout. No Doubt.
He is something very very special. A total droid. Thankfully, he is not long for this world. I see him gone at the next election, along with a whole lot of his colleagues.
Folks,
Doesn’t Nick Minchin remind you of Noah Vosen from the Bourne Ultimatum (http://bourne.wikia.com/wiki/Noah_Vosen, http://www.david-strathairn.com/bio.html)
