What a very odd 24 hours.
Today’s Newspoll quarterly shows that the ALP would have won around 81 seats to 66 were an election held during the last three months – a period where Labor polled their lowest in Newspoll in 4 years. Kevin Rudd is now toast, as the ALP has no choice but to elect Gillard or they elect Abbott as PM by default at the next election – it is the challenge itself that slits Rudd’s throat, not the actual outcome of the leadership ballot.
So assuming that the party room acts rationally (a big ask, but let’s run with it!) – Kevin Rudd will be the first PM to ever be removed from office while having a strong election winning lead, and possibly the first in any western democracy for decades, giving us our first ever female PM.
As I said, a very very odd 24 hours.
UPDATE:
The Party acted rationally and so did Rudd by stepping down and not contesting the leadership.
All up, very clinical.

yes Peter J
Had Rudd gone to a DD on the ETS, he would still be PM, and in his second term.
I am stunned none of the MSM, not even the ABC, has pointed out that Tanner was all set to lose his seat anyway. I thought he might jump seats to a safer option, but he decided to quit completely.
