I’d like to applaud The Punch for something: it’s making a point of giving gay couples an opportunity to advocate for equal rights by outlining their experiences – and at a crucial time. A few weeks ago polling revealed that a majority of Australians support marriage equality. And yet neither of the two largest parties do – yet. The ALP national conference is this weekend. (A national day of action on the subject will be taking place on Saturday.)
It’s just nice to see News Ltd standing up for justice and equality – and in a forum in which many of the throwbacks who still oppose it actually participate. Bravo.

“Exposing intellectual dishonesty in the mainstream media, across the political spectrum. We’re looking at you, Bolt, Blair, Marr, Akerman, Albrechtsen, and whoever else wishes to stray onto the path of fatuous opinion.”
Are you trying to appease your critics? I ask because I would have thought a congratulatory message for the Punch would be better served with a post in the open thread, it seems that having a whole thread dedicated goes against the mission statement.
Your blog though, just saying
I congratulate them too, but I don’t have a problem with the Punch because their moderation seems fair to me.
And most of the comments are civilised, considering it’s a news ltd blog.
David Penberthy also recently wrote a post about how discriminatory gay marriage ban is – can’t find it on the Punch website though.
He’s on Q&A this week (Penberthy) I’ll be watching because to be honest I’d not heard of him (or paid any attention) before I found the Punch blog.
This one, confessions?
Rob – to be honest, I’m happy to devote a whole post to this particular issue. I think it deserves a whole lot of noise being made about it until the injustice is rectified.
Also, the more people that know about Saturday’s Day of Action, the better.
yes Chade, it was that one. Funny, i recall it being more about same sex marriage than what it actually is.
You’re right Jeremy, it is an important issue and commendable, it would be good to see more of this from News Ltd sites considering the popularity of News ltd. I reiterate my congratulations. Good on Ya Penberthy
Rob Mills of Australian Idol fame also put in his two cents about gay marriage. You can’t say they don’t get the most qualified anaysists.
“Throwbacks???”
In a civilised society you should not denigrate those who oppose your views.
And are you now using this site as a promotional tool for your own ideological views?? As RobJ pointed out in one, this sites mission statement is pretty clear. They happen to publish a story that you agree with – how is that exposing intellectual dishonesty?
Check out the “arguments” of the pro-discrimination side in the comments. There’s your intellectual dishonesty.
@ baldrick: there are 2 issues here: 1.there is no logical argument against gay marriage, only peoples personal
prejudicesviews. as jeremy says, some of the comments on that post show this quite well.2. all blog authors use their blogs to highlight issues that are of interest to them, and perhaps to their readers. I have no problem with any of the authors here using this blog to highlight discriminatory practices or areas where people are disadvantaged. if I can comment i will, otherwise i will simply read but not comment. Why is this a problem?
