Just another Crikey Blogs weblog

Open thread November 2-5

Here is the open thread for this week, feel free to use this as a place to carry on discussion that would be considered off topic elsewhere. This thread can be accessed from the sidebar.

As a starter, I missed Insiders yesterday morning so completely missed Annabel Crabb’s “University of East Bumcrack” jibe at Andrew Bolt’s expense, but it has been immortalised on a raglan T, with proceeds going to a charity nominated by Ms Crabb.

The penguins are alive!

“And once they killed the leak, there was no oil flow out, and thus no fuel for the fire.

    So the fire went out.”

Obviously I realise that, fact is it leaked for ten weeks, fact is leak was plugged within days of their asset catching fire… Just saying ;)

From Marieke Hardy in todays AGE:

“8. Weren’t you going to tell me where to send my complaint letters?

There are a couple of chin-wobbling columnists at our rival newspaper who would no doubt be very keen to hear your views/confirm their belief that the world is populated by small-minded philistines like themselves who wish to stomp all over art in the name of something called ”moral decency”. Why don’t you try them? Failing that you can sit quivering in wait for the next shocking cat among the pigeons. No doubt it will come along soon.”
I wonder who she could be talking about?

When two Qantas pilots almost land their plane without lowering the undercarriage, someone is at fault. According to Miranda Devine, it’s all the fault of those nasty totalitarian AGW fanatics.
    Yes! It is!

You couldn’t invent this bollocks in the midst of LSD psychosis, really, could you?

That is the funniest thing I have ever read, she has beaten “the Greens are Nazis” by a country mile. Even Peirs would be hard pressed to go from Airline incedent to GW in on column!!

I think I’m just about finished with the National Times. Looking at the comments this week it appears that it now attracts mainly Telegraph/Herald-Sun types.

Thankfully I still have blogs such as PP to read.

Daphon: i rarely read the comments at any of the MSM sites. Apart from there being no obvious value-adding to the article they are attached to, most are hate-filled rants.

I do however read the National Times articles which i generally find are more insightful than what you find at news ltd.

monkeywrench @ 53: Guy Rundle to the rescue:

What’s even better is Devine’s example of creeping totalitarian bureaucracy – ‘try getting your passport renewed at the Neutral Bay post office’. Apparently they have some sort of standards regarding photos or something, which the counter guy can’t relax just because he knows you. I mean what’s the world coming to you’re trying to get home to write your 129th article on how we need to have stricter border security and the bastards won’t let you use a photo from year 8. It’s enough to make you say ‘don’t you know whose daughter I am?’

The Right can’t think about these problems – and they’re real problems – properly, because it would mean giving up their ideal self-image. So they cling to it, and sound like Ayn Rand on acid, and never evolve an argument about how we manage increasinlgy complex societies in a complex, but less overbearing way.

I wonder how much of our money Rudd would have wasted by the time he eventually concedes and sends the asylum seekers on the Oceanic Viking to Christmas Island? I suspect this Rudd acting tough malarkey is rather expensive.

Good going Rudd, using poor asylum seekers as a political football just to gain the bigot vote….Prick! You’re up there with John Howard as someone who is prepared to be a total bastard for political gain.

You’re a great advert for the Christian values you espouse…/sarc

Hey Rob! You’ll enjoy this article by John Pilger.

Are we not fed up with this kind of hypocrisy? The use of the term ''illegal immigrants'' is both false and craven. The few people struggling to reach our shores are not illegal. International law is clear - they are legal. How ironic; the people in those leaking boats demonstrate the kind of guts Australians are said to admire.

And yet Rudd, like Howard, sends the navy against them and runs what is effectively a concentration camp on Christmas Island. Imagine a shipload of white people fleeing a catastrophe being treated like this. No Indonesian solution for them.
