Funny or cruel?
This might just be an ex-young-looking-teenager speaking, but it seems to me that Daniel Gooley, the McDonald’s employee (who is therefore at least 14), might already be struggling with issues relating to his not particularly mature physical appearance. (Also his surname.) Having a prominent thing on the internet like Crikey mocking him around the nation on the basis of something over which he has no control and over which he is possibly quite sensitive, seems to me to be unnecessarily cruel – and, given the current discussion of teen depression and suicide, it might be something that adult writers should consider when the butt of their joke is just a kid.
Even if he wasn’t the intended target, and even if it was funny.

G’day Jeremy.
Offending Daniel was not my intention. Offending the greater city of Geelong was.
I apologise I called Daniel a 12 year old. As an off the cuff remark I apologise for not being factually true to McDonalds’ employment terms and conditions. I will admit my research for my part here was lacking.
Funny or cruel? I’ll let your readers decide.
Teen suicide is a serious issue. So is the quickly diminishing fast food outlet numbers in Geelong. If there was a charity that serviced both simultaneously (Geelong and Corio Fast Food and Teen Suicide Foundation — GACFFATS) I’d donate the pro rata wage of the time it took me to write that this morning. You’re looking at about $2.
Finally, if I am in the company of Bolt, Devine and the good readers of this vessel I suppose that’s something to to celebrate with a 21 piece feed.
Leigh.
Voted funny.
For the record, I am not in any way asserting that Leigh Josey’s off the cuff remark in any way puts him in the company of people like Devine and Bolt.
I wouldn’t assume Gooley is 14, though – hell, I didn’t look any older than that when I was 18 and at university.
Leigh Josey’s Morning Media Mauling was always going to fan the fires of controversy sooner or later. Nice to see that that media-trawling cap-wearing NT News-reading t-shirt clad fiend has managed to pull it off on day one.
Sheesh.
And for the record, on a more serious note, I think link from Leigh’s comment to teen suicide is one gargantuan quantum leap. Reminds me of the TV show, ‘Quantum Leap.’
I don’t know – put yourself in the shoes of that kid, if he finds that the nation’s been laughing at him.
Surely they would already be laughing Jeremy – given his comment was very funny. Not a “disgraced for life how could you say that funny” — more of an endearing, naive funny. Maybe something to mention at the 21st.
You haven’t even begun on their hair.
Holden – I agree. What is with the Youth of today and the product? And that hat? Who does he think he is? The fresh prince of Bel Air?
I vote neither funny or cruel.
Crunny. Fruel. I would like a Zinger.
Kids these days,
Having said that- Daniel Gooley- the ‘young looking’ curly mopped, ranga; your response was business focussed (working at Macca’s is better than a paper run), as opposed to James- Tousle headed kinds hanging out on street corners always looks good in town; Tom- “kill the hippy!”, Mitch- “the food is good there (I can add nothing…) and Jake who makes Daniel look positively middle aged, and therefore should not be going to KFC without adult supervision.
Good on you Daniel, with that sort of attitiude, a fine career in the Liberal Party could await you.
I didn’t look any older than that when I was 18 and at university
What makes you think you look any older now?
ZZZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNGGG!
Daniel Gooley, if you’re reading, don’t kill yourself and don’t vote Green, because if you do and they somehow get in humourless people like Jeremy are going to come and dictate what is and isn’t funny.
And now the nation is laughing at you.
Then my work here is done!
House rule I once made, you can be cruel about people, AS LONG AS it’s funny and true.
Is this kind of like Media Watch having a go at the ABC once every four months?
Spruiking a nontroversy in order to gain cred.
BTW, I didn’t even notice the kid had a funny name until you brought it up.
I think you might be geting distracted by wedding plans.
Cheers
Well… if the kids of today are the leaders of tomorrow, then Gooley should think of this as valuable work experience in media castigation (pretty tame really, baby steps)
There’s nothing to this folks. Back to Bolt (or if it was up to me, Paul “I’m green, I swear!” Sheehan)…
Is it just me or does that kid really look like Ronald McDonald’s love child?
I mean – seriously – it could be true.

We’re bastions of independence and neutrality.
We’re bastions of independence and neutrality.
And once every few months we’re determined to prove it!
Has no one noticed that the second kid actually said “I don’t like some of KFC’s practises (sic – although the spelling mistake is no doubt the fault of the journalist and not the child)” – how cool is that? Who says that teenagers don’t put any thought into social justice and other issues?
Yes, that was good.
Is this kind of like Media Watch having a go at the ABC once every four months?
Next month Jeremy will be targeting a little-frequented socialist stronghold called “Anonymous Lefty”.
That bastard has it coming.
