What will be the fallout from the ALP National Conference? Will the ALP endorsing uranium marriage be all we hear about between now and the weekend? Will somebody finally publish the report about the Australian scientists who must have found a cure for being hit by a nuclear warhead that explains the ALP’s abandonment of the NNPT? Will somebody finally get an answer out of Tony Abbott on whether he’s going to stop Liberal MPs who want to vote for equality? Will leftist media organisations like News Ltd stop writing about his record unpopularity?
And now that most of the major political broadcasts have concluded for the year, what kind of silliness will the B team get up to?
Here’s the place to discuss it as it happens.

Forget to also mention Sue Gordon in WA.
Nice work, William. You would think Marius would know that.
Over at the DT Joe Boy and Timmy are attempting, what is IMHO, a rather pathetic double act on Tim Freedman.
That’s the rules folks –
If you’ve written a song 11 years ago, about a friend with a poker machine addiction who suicides – you can never again perform in a venue with poker machines, if you do, we’ll claim you have no credibility.
OTOH – if you stand up for the Clubs industry and say you don’t like these proposed changes, we’ll call you a “RESPECTED youth worker” and give you the first 8 or 9 paragraphs of the story before we even start hinting that there might be a little hypocrisy in your stance.
Ok, I’m WAY too drunk. Certainly more drunk that somebody who can possibly imagine ripping off his employer by turning up in the morning. I’ll be sending that email shortly and, if necessary (which I very much doubt) making that phone call (*giggle*)
I’ve been watching something that was on one of the public broadcasters recently … “all watched over by machines”.
It’s making me a bit angry. And I’m tyypng vri slaow tho aye get this ryr …
Is, or is not, ayn rand the most mentally retarded person to have ever been considered a “philosopher” anywhere in the last 200 years? I refuse to capitalise her name … because she is so evidently an idiot.
She’s the silver-spoon daughter of a rich establishment family. Never did a day’s actual work in her life. Lost the lot to the bolshies (who were {snip}, I agree) but then has the chutzpah to lecture morons (we’ll come to that) about who the productive people are and how they should be productive. I’m sorry, but she’s not qualified to lick my toenails, and she’s telling us how to organise government? Who the hell listens to this bozo? Yes, you guessed it … americans (they’re the morons)
This “documentary” then tries to justify its waste of valuable (*snigger*) bandwidth by trying to link her “thinking” to silicon valley entrepreneurs.
Two things …
Firstly, they chose “entrepreneurs” that I have not heard of. Ok, that’s not the final arbiter, but I’m not a complete idiot – whatever your IT problem, I can pretty much solve it (and that’s applied at the corporate level these days). But they mentioned “bill gates” in passing and yet somehow failed to actually produce a reference. The rest of their interviews are (a) desperate poseurs or (b) not actually relevant to the thesis.
But secondly … IT people are liars. They’re full of shit. The more successful they are, the more shitful their justifications for their success. Do not, ever, believe a single word a successful computer geek gives for how or why that made it big. They might actually know the answer (and a few don’t have a clue) but they’re never going to tell another human being. The real answers are “luck” or “bastardry” or “sheer bastardry” or “market research” or “nobody has the foggiest idea”. Anyone who says otherwise should be dismissed as desperately trying to trade a windfall for a girlfriend.
I’m done. I’ve forgotten what the point is … and I’m having trouble focusing … I’ll work on this tomorrow.
Can anyone make head or tail of this ABC Breaking News item?
“The BBC says the matter is believed to be related to a protest about the current political situation Congo.
Police vans were at the scene, and it is understood passenger alarms were deliberately evacuated on at least one train.”
Reminds me of this infamous story.
“A home for stray dogs is on fire. Reports say that over 30 dogs immediately evacuated.”
I don’t blame them.
MoC do read the article on Mr Thiel in the New Yorker.
Tomus @53, we can all sleep more soundly in our beds knowing Joey and Timmeh continue in their proud tradition of speaking power to truth.
It’s sobering to think where we would be without community-minded organs such as the Daily Telegraph countering
influentialformerly-eminent pop musicians such as Freedman, as he strides like a colossus through suburban pub and pokie venues spreading his social fabric-rending heresies and hypocrisies. There’s surely nothing wrong about mocking a fallen pop idol for having to “adapt to commercial realities”. It’s no aphrodisiac, but a bit of schadenfreude doesn’t go astray when you’ve got nothing much else to contribute.
Tomus observed:
I am always a bit troubled when I hear of allegations that someone is guilty of hypocrisy. It’s the easiest of easy cheap shots, but of course very appealing when the business of showing that something that someone is saying or doing is simply wrong.
We live in a world in which we are all inter-dependent. It’s possibly (though pointless IMO) to argue that any act at all that helps perpetuate usages of that society may have the indirect effect of giving aid and comfort to things we’d condemn. I pay taxes, and those taxes support in part all manner of things to which I object. I care for and teach children of people who are doing things I’d object to. I shop at Woolies and Coles even though they own more p*ker machines than anyone else and sell meat from animals raised in circumstances to which I’d object. I run a petrol vehicle, even though I wish our economy was zero-net carbon.
Before anyone should allege hypocrisy, one should show a very close and willing connection between their acts and the activity that they say they object to, IMO.
Jack Sparraaggghhh @ 58
I was thinking it’s probably likely that Freedman has scored some extra ticket sales from the story. Publicity = Punters.
Fran @ 59
Well put.
Meanwhile over at the DT Joe Boy continues his campaign today.
This time his sights are firmly trained on the Rev Tim Costello for daring to accept $500,000+ for the Tsunami Appeal from the AHA in 2005. While back in 2000 he accepted $4000 + TA for speaking to Clubs Australia, which he promptly gave to charity.
Junk Journalism at its’ best
This claim is apparently wrong. The organisation that accepted the money was Care Australia.
Fran, I heard that too about Care Australia.
But then there’s this:
There’s been some conflicting accounts about this; e.g., elsewhere the amount was said to be $1 million. I give up.
Anyway it’s really all irrelevant to the merit or otherwise of the precommitment proposal.
