Nourishing the environmental debate

State of the Planet: Obama set to green the White House

Crikey intern Tig Huggins rounds up today’s green news:

Obama victory signals start to US environmental agenda. “President Obama will shred the Bush administration’s energy policies and introduce a major climate change bill in an attempt to bring the US back into the international environment fold” writes The Guardian. “He is also expected to announce a goal of reducing US greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and then cutting them by 80% by 2050.”

Europeans form Renewable Energy Agency. A group of European governments are forming the world’s first International Renewable Energy Agency, offering technical, financial, and policy advice for governments on clean energy, WorldChanging reports.

Miracle fungus. Scientists have discovered a substance growing in fungi in a South American rainforest that has potential as a sustainable bio-fuel, Carbon Positive reports. “The fungus appears to offer a much more efficient method of producing transport fuels than currently used. Fuels generally require large amounts of heat, pressure and chemical additives in their production, but much of this work is already done by Gliocladium roseum in producing mycodiese.”

The end of the tuna sandwich. Tuna-eaters will be horrified to learn that numbers of Bluefin tuna are in decline due to poor international collaboration over catch sizes. Perhaps they should introduce the Rex Hunt method – If you can’t pash your fish, no tuna sandwich for you! Green Grok writes: “For 40 years, despite catch regulations, Atlantic bluefin tuna populations have declined precipitously. Some estimates show western Atlantic bluefin tuna down by 90 percent from preindustrial levels.”
