What’s happening on the planet today:
Glaciers melting at record rate. Glaciers are melting at a record rate, except in Norway, where the excess of snow has made them even bigger, according to this Guardian video report.
Gorilla warfare. Gorillas in the Virunga National Park are under threat from fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with rangers being forced to flee the park after armed troops took over its headquarters. More than half of the world’s mountain gorillas live within the park’s borders.
Eco-friendly billboard. Times Square is set to house its first eco-friendly billboard, powered entirely by sun and wind, with no back-up generator. The company behind the sign, Ricoh, estimate it will save 18 tonnes of carbon being put into the air every year.
A seafood snob ponders the future of fish. Food writer Mark Bittman looks at the changing fish market in the New York Times. “Most of the fish we’ll be eating will be farmed, and by midcentury, it might be easier to catch our favorite wild fish ourselves rather than buy it in the market.”
