Ask a climate scientist: how is the global average temperature calculated?

   

A State of the Climate – Global Analysis report declared Jan-Oct 2010 as the hottest period on record just last month. The stats came from combining the global land and ocean surfaces temperatures and comparing them to past historical time periods. But how is a global average temperature calculated? How is an “average” created in a planet where there is no such thing as “typical”? And has CO2 caused this increase in global temperature? Climate scientists explain.

Crikey reader Kerry asks:

We hear a lot about the Average Global Temperature. How can anyone calculate the Average Global Temperature? I know they take measurements all over (or in some places) but what do these mean? As I understand it the real measurements are of the anomalies from some base number. And how do they measure this anomalous average ? — by putting together north and south hemispheres? And what about the oceans which comprise over 70% of the earth’s surface?

Professor James O’Donnell from the University of Connecticut responds:

This is a very deep question. The annual global mean temperature has become a very important statistic because it smooths out the year to year variations that are observed at any single station and reveals really long period trends. Since the air temperature varies with altitude, latitude and time of year, changes at any single station is obviously not representative of the whole earth.

We would like to measure the temperature everywhere in the world at the same altitude every second and then average that. That is obviously impractical. What we have is a network of instruments around the world that share their measurements. Unfortunately, there are more in some places than others.

There are few at high latitudes and altitudes and lots near big cities. And they come and go as funding levels vary and cities grow. Since the 70s we also have satellite measurements of radiation and these can be used to estimate surface temperature over land and the ocean.

Over the last 20 years we have also developed a network of instruments in the ocean. Some float at the surface and are anchored, some drift around with the currents and some go up and down every day. But these records are still pretty short.

Figuring out how much of the globe is represented by a single station, and correcting for the errors in measurements etc. has been a very important area of research in climatology which I can’t explain in a few sentences. But the bottom line is that much of the available data put in a weighted average and the weights are carefully calculated to account for station density and measurement uncertainty.

There a few variants of the approach, but the results are generally consistent. This figure shows a few different versions. It is the difference from the average of measurements between 1960 and 1990.

It’s not perfect, but it is probably very close to the best we can do.

Crikey reader Trevor asks:

CO2 have been given to explain the Little Ice Age and Mediaeval Warming, so what is the evidence that CO2, or some other human sourced greenhouse gas, has caused the increase in temperature since 1860? Is it just a positive correlation between CO2 and temperatures, or is there some other, more fundamental reason, keeping in mind, as I understand the argument, that the ability of CO2 to absorb long-range radiation increases only in a logarithmic fashion and that the amount of long-wave radiation absorbed by CO2 is miniscule compared to other greenhouses gases, such as water vapour, of which the presence of the latter doesn?t seem to me to be due directly to human activity?

Charlie Zender, Professor of Earth System Science at the University of California responds:

It is not true that CO2 explains the Medieval Warming or the Little Ice Age. Natural causes of climate change were dominant until about 1950, and human causes have dominated after that.

The evidence is in climate model simulations forced by these different factors. Anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) like CO2 trap enough extra heat to explain about half of the observed warming since 1750. Models show that the other half of the warming is due to self-enhancing feedbacks in the climate system, including the increase in water vapor (a strong GHG) due to the anthropogenic CO2.

Alan Robock, Professor II at Rutgers University and Andreas Schmittner, assistant professor at Oregon State University have both reviewed and approved this answer.

    May I ask how much our two gum nuts receive by way of Govt hand out to perform their in depth research (gfawww!) and does this impact on their partiality?

    what about issues of integrity and the discipline of scientfic curiosity as motivators – from knowledge of friends and family working in science they are pretty powerful

    In the 40s, Amber, Marble Bar was reported regularly as Australia’s hottest settlement. It was an isolated spot, so unlike urban areas like Sydney where the very growth of the city generates increased heat which distorts whatever change has taken place, IF there are continuing measurements from spots such as W.A’s Marble Bar, or Fort Grey in NSW [another frequently listed hot spot in the 40s] where urban development isn’t a factor, it might (assuming sufficient examples exist) be interesting.

    Norman, sounds like a good “ask a climate scientist” question. My guess on the short version of the answer – and also implicit in Prof. Zender’s answer about “weighting”- is, “they’ve thought of that.”

    Michael and others – why do you think there is a conspiracy afoot? We are all dependent on fossil fuels and is this is a terrible and trying problem, but wishing it away is just a child’s fancy.

    how insightful, I bet no-one has thought there could be a conspiracy. I’ll go out and ask the glaciers how much they are being paid to retreat. Or the arctic ice sheet what the cost was to loose so much ice….. man, you’re a genius.

    PeeBee – your brain shrunk with the glaciers!

    The same scientists that give us these ‘statistics’ tell us that 3% of global emissions are caused by humans. The US Government (aka Obama) has stated that it wants to reduce human emissions by 20% over a long period, which translates to a reduction in carbon of a mere 0.6% Just one volcano will exceed that!

    The time should be spent in accepting global warming, and accommodating changes, rather than pretending we can change the outcome.

    Y2K was the fantasy in 1999. Spray can emissions were the other, and later scientists say that it wasn’t the spray cans but cow emissions that were at fault. These people are using unsound data, and hey know it.

    The oceans have not risen, and while the north has lost ice, the Antarctic has gained it. This evidence of adjustment, not change.

    How about considering what drought (lack of precipitation) does for glaciers? It deprives them of moisture and they windburn and disappear. The oceans are warmer at the equator and we have more rain in equatorial areas – thus less rain in the north. There are logical explanations, but fanatics, supported by rabid media, have chosen to ignore them. You seem to be among the trusting many that follow like sheep without examining the true facts.

    As for scientists – I employ over twenty of them, and they don’t support this global warming theory at all, saying that history has shown that we are moving within normal trends. Ground excavation has also shown past periods of high and low carbon periods, yet temperature has not moved in tandem – can you and your scientists explain that?

    PB, with a boss as moronic as you, IF you really did employ 20 scientists, it wouldn’t be surprising that they’d humour you, because unlike you with your posting, they wouldn’t have the security of anonymity, would they? But I did say IF.
